GATLING GUN KIT
« on: 15 »
Been thinking about buying one of these "GATLING GUN KIT
CNC MACHINED ALUMINUM FOR RUGER® 10/22® RIFLES". Ever since was a kid the War Wagon was (still is) my favorite movie made me fall in love with the Gatling Gun.  Once I had the pleasure years later of shooting the M60 while in the military I have been hooked on machine guns. Unfortunately being that I don't have 10K plus that I can blow on a really cool fun toy, this looks like it could be a viable option. Any of yall have any experience with or shot one of these? Any thoughts? Any idea what a realistic/reasonable price should be for the 2 Ruger 22s the kit requires?

I've seen that before, probably on that website... The Rugers are semi auto anyway what does the handle do does it say? Pull both triggers, quickly... Or??

A chap on you tube made a .22 LR Gatling gun, exact replica brass and everything scaled down well sweet...

Can you buy machine guns in your state, I know you can in some places, on impact guns it has class 3 which are automatic guns but is that what they are in every state? Expensive aren't they...

You can make automatic guns, do you have to pay for a class 3 license or is it just the guns that are expensive out of interest.

Try and get an older one, Bren gun... Or an RPD probably cheaper, perhaps.

I'll bet it could be made full automatic. :)

 8) Neat looking project kit. Not in my budget plans at the moment, I am under "personal sequestration cuts" right now.  :'(

The crank fires the guns alternately. The gun is simply two semi-automatic rifles that fire by turning the crank.
These kits were originally made to use 2 M-1 carbines. The 10-22 kits came later.

One reviewer wrote that it fires 50 rounds in 6 seconds, so while NOT technically fully automatic which also keeps the price down and the paper work and regulations at bay, it sure sounds like it does a pretty good job of mimicking full auto.

I would actually be more interested in a set up using two M-1 carbines.  I know of a gunsmith who convert an M-1 carbine to chamber 50AE rounds.  8)

So are you using only part of the Ruger 10/22?

Guess I will be a first for this group. Probably wont be until 4th of July week so I have some time to get everything together, assemble it and have fun with it. Still curious if anyone has any idea of what the Ruger 22s should run. Also kinda surprised considering how opinionated this group tends to be as a whole that more members haven't commented. I still think it looks like a ton of fun. So Once I get everything ordered and try it out I will let yall know.

Well whoever puts one together better have $1000 bucks (at todays prices) of ammo because you won't believe how fast it disappears just getting the feel for it . Anyone who has a 10/22 knows full well how fast ammo goes , it's way too fun and fast , imagine side by sides, holy cow .
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

Thanks Steve! I was guesstimating $250 a pop! So about $900 for everything plus as OV-1D Pointed out LOTS of $$$ for ammo! Hmm better be worth it! Hoping I can get lucky and perhaps find the guns used a bit cheaper but who knows. Perhaps I should start a benevolence fund! Toms Gatling Gun Benevolence Fund? Any donations? Or charge folks $5 to try it out at the range lol. I have NOT even checked on the price of ammo in several months.

...and whatever you do DON'T remove the crank handle and chuck a cordless drill to the rod! That wouldn't just be against the law, it would be WRONG!

I certainly hope that nobody ever does that to your crank gatling 10/22 dually when you're not looking and then reattaches the crank handle. If I had one of these, the crank handle would be welded in place to prevent such a thing from ever happening!

Cordless drill, ha ha! Like it...

Someone attached an electric motor to the Gatling gun in the 19th c apparently and it did about 4000rpm theoretically, never caught on though for some reason.

Bet you could do something similar using the Gast gun principle, which essentially involves having two guns with one cocking and firing the other by the recoil.

The recoil of the first gun firing, you understand.

Pair of lever actions either side of a plank of wood, mounted by... Think I might draw it, he he.

I've been drawing this since I last posted, he he... Thought I'd give you a laugh, it's a fair contraption. "There's much simpler ways of creating automatic weapons, but just trying to illustrate the Gast gun principle by pretending we did it earlier in Cowboy times using Winchesters but Marlin ones in this illustration for the purposes of ejecting the rounds in relation to the guns position" Just one picture for now, I might illustrate the entire firing cycle but i'll explain anyway.

In this picture the top gun has... It would be mounted to a board, like this if you where viewing it from the top "By the cocking bar mount behind the spring" so left and right barrels really...

The top one as drawn has fired, the guns are attached to each other by the barrel mounts, they pass over the axis pin the forward one holding the return spring... So the guns move back, you pull the handle attached to the rear of the axis pin to load initally and when you let go the trigger would be depressed by a spring loaded stud which pops up out of the board after depressing to allow the lever to pass.

Then it would go BANG! The guns move back, in the board there would be cut outs inside which are studs, the studs are shown in the levers, the groves would follow the angle of the one not in the lever, and would extend forward and back respectively ie: In relation to the gun going forward from here "Try and imagine it, for now" Thus the studs operate the levers, the spring drives the guns back in so doing the empty one originally is loaded upon the rearward movement and the fired one on the forward movement.

The lower gun will then fire as per, and the process repeated opposite way round until the magazines run out.

Make sense?

He he, imagine it's 1886 you'd be like yee'haw  :)

This is a picture of the WW1 Gast gun, German about 1600rpm Developed by about 1918 I think.

And a Wikipage link if you don't know about it...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gast_gun

Think it was recoil, might be gas, or both in various forms.

But they did catch on. First GE when it created the mini gun and then Dillion Aero when they redesigned the mini gun into the monster that it is today.

I saw photos of what may have been a home made prototype a couple of years ago. The heart of the design is a pair of cams mounted off center of the drive rods, if I remember what i saw correctly. I agree that it is a very neat looking innovation. Too expensive for me since I would hardly ever get it out to shoot. That thing would be just perfect for one of those Swamper alligator hunters to mount on their boat. It would play perfectly to the viewers tastes: half would be horrified and half would be envious!

They caught on eventually, but not at the time when an electric motor was applied to a Gatling gun which was in the late 19th c.

I don't know.....but it does look like a mean kit
and it looks worth buying two 10/22's to do it
and find out...if you have a little mad money.

Of course you might get nailed if you go deer
hunting with it....it would most likely just be
a fun toy to shoot for the pure fun of shooting.

But what fun it would be.  :)

Yeah it is much more authentic. I have been on other forums where people talk about working onit but taking 10k plus hours and years part time. They also sell a completed model for about 10K but I don't have the patience, Proper equipment or skills, much less the 10k for a completed model.

Here's a video I just finished creating showing the evolution of my crank fire dress up kit prototypes versions 1 through 3. The first one is air cooled only. The second one is (truly) water cooled only. But my third prototype is convertible in under a minute to be either air cooled or (truly) water cooled (no fake water jackets here). I learned a lot making the first two, and my 3rd prototype incorporates new design changes that I learned from making the earlier ones. In the last several minutes of my video you will see my latest 3rd prototype firing at the range using the new GSG 110 rd drum mag and it's really spitting out the rounds.  Hope you enjoy it. Bill
