Does anyone know of a study comparing ballistics and knock down between .22 mag and .32 acp, both standard rounds and the new super scientific stuff?  Then how does a .22 mag hollow point compare to a jacketed .32 acp.?

Uncle_Lee

I've been looking and can't find anything.

Probably not what you are looking for but might help.

Enter your data and it gives you muzzle energy.

It is the best anyone has come up with so far.  Thanks.  If I can get my act together and find the ammo I'll do the old milk jug testing.

I like the phone book test . Was surprised how deep the Super Companion drove that 30gr bullet with 4gr of 4F black.

You can see how many pages it goes in, how large the cavity at the end is, and how deep the damage goes past where it stopped. The damage went much deeper than you would think. Also can recover the bullet.

I put the book on a hard backing then pop it at 3'. Line up several different loads in the same book then sit down with a drink and "read" the results.

Always enjoyed doing the little tests you're talking about. Interesting to see what the bullet does as it hits some of these things.
Makes for a fun day at the range also.

i like to do tests yesterday small punkin 22 22mag 9m i still like 22mag shells win. cci  hornady red tip

Drill 2 small holes in the top of your pumpkin and use a funnel to fill it with water. MUCH bigger splat! Want to try filling one with Jello, let it set up in the fridge then hitting it with a 12ga slug.

This is all that was left of one 10 pounder.

cool i will fill with water

Water or Jello? Either way, seems like a "blast" to watch!

With appropriate ammo (read: FMJ) both will penetrate sufficiently to reach vitals and meet FBI penetration recommendations (> 12"). If you do your part, it will poke a hole in something important.  That makes them viable for self defense.

As far as knockdown power, I'd say it's about on par with an icepick, for all intents and purposes.  You may not know if you've hit them right away,  and if they're under the influence and their adrenaline is going, they may not know either.

In both calibers, some hollowpoints expand... sometimes... generally at the cost of underpenetrating.  Not worth it IMO, but to each their own.

RogueTS1

An icepick does not get 12" penetration but it can do the job if applied accurately........................ I take the hollow points.................. the bigger the icepick the more likely of hitting something vital.

No, icepicks aren't 12" long though one could extrapolate.  I was referring to estimated "knockdown" power... as in basically none.  It's simply going to drill a .22 or .32 caliber hole.

And while expansion is nice,  it won't do anything for you if you don't penetrate deep enough to reach the vitals.  That 1mm extra diameter is very unlikely to turn a miss into a hit, and that's when it actually does expand properly.

RogueTS1

My point was that despite not getting 12" of penetration with an icepick, it is still known to get the job done when it comes to killing a person. That being said the FBI 12" rule has to be looked at with a little discernation. More penetration is better but not getting 12", as stated by the FBI does not make one necessarily ineffective.

Fair enough!

It seems the oomph between the two is close enough that it doesn't matter much which you use.  Do the rest of you get the same feeling?

agree i never told people what to use. myself self defense naa 22 mag home defense 22 with red dot years ago was repairing a frends gun we got into this what is best he said 357 mag we went to indoor range set man target15 feet hit switch he used 357 got 2 shots off arm @ miss i shot 10 shots all in the head . now we are having trouble with clown robbers ringing door bells he will get the 357 it sets beside the 22. i forgot to say he tried it with his 22 10 in the head.

Uncle_Lee

Everyone should carry what they feel safe with.
And I should add, hit what & where they want the bullet to go.
If you can't do that, please don't carry it.

I agree Uncle Lee. What is good for some may not be good for another. The old saying, "A hit with a .22 is infinitly better than a miss with a .45 acp" comes to mind.

Too many people think about hits and misses and not enough think about what/who is hit with the miss.
My wife might be the one hit when the shooter misses.
This ain't the movies folks. If you miss when shooting at something besides a target, that bullet don't just vanish. It goes on till it hits something. Maybe someone's little kid or his wife. You might pi$$ someone off real bad.

My wife and I practice at least half of our shooting laying down and shoot from different positions.
That way if there is a crowd, we will be down and shooting up and not into the crowd.

I consider a person on the other side of the bad guy/girl as being a crowd and don't want to hit them.

That "up" shot will still come down somewhere...better not to miss.

Unc I have to get a copy of this video of you two shooting from bed and in different positions , DANG, besides aren't those empty casings hot of the bare skin and not to say anything about those crowds . You two should be ashamed , SMILE UNC . Good night .

I will do my best not to miss.
Odds are better shooting up at an angle.
No shot in public is going to be perfect.
Nor guaranteed to hit what it is shot at.

How would you teach shooters not to miss?
What would you have them do while shooting in a crowd?

In my case, the question of oomlph has more to do with my expected threat.  For most of my shoots (snake, fox, coon) a .22 is all I need.  Lately, there are more wild dogs and the wild hogs are starting to move in.  Given the option of course I'll grab a rifle or shot gun; but, I can always carry a mini.  Often it is inconvenient to carry a rifle.  I can carry my Ruger LCP but with that long trigger pull it is hard to be snake head accurate.  The question I really wanted the answer to was, what would I gain by going to single action .32 semi auto.  After this really helpful discussion I've concluded I would gain nothing.  I'll stick with one of my minis and add something heavier depending on conditions.

grayelky

Faced with your dog/hog potential, I'd likely have a .357 of some description.

I have up to .44 but they are all too big and heavy to carry all the time.  I'm not sure I want to drop a hammer on a .357 small enough to carry in my pocket.

My thoughts
I want something that can get me away from trouble
Aim small, miss small

OLD and GRUMPY

To cover snakes up to hogs/dogs  with 4 or 2 legs and keeping the gun smaller I would probably go with one of the 410/.45 long Colt revolvers. 410 target or LC shot shell for small stuff  heavy LC for bigger stuff and the Win 410 PDX for those in close might miss OH CRAP shots. This turns a light shotgun into a nasty close in bugger. http://www.winchester.com/Products/shotshell-ammunition/Innovative/PDX1-Defender-Shotshell/Pages/S410PDX1.aspx  Like getting hit by 3 or 4 .38s at the same time. I cut one open and those disks would be mean.

I seem to not be making the point.  On my place there might be something in the front yard or even on the front porch.  A Tarus Judge would be a good choice but they are unlikely to be in your pocket all the time.  If I have walked out to feed the fish I would be unlikely to have put on a gun belt.  A mini stays clipped in my pocket all the time.  Before that I carried a Derringer but they aren't snake head accurate.  I moved to a Ruger LCP, great little gun, easy to carry but with that long trigger pull I'm not snake head accurate.  I was considering a small, single action .32.  I prefer revolvers but would consider a single action semi.  After this discussion I don't think I would gain anything over my .22 mag mini.  Yes, I keep a sawed off 12 gauge double with half a dozen shells on the stock.  Bird shot up to slug.  That way I'm ready for what ever is out there.  Experience has taught me that when I really need a gun I have to go for what is in my pocket.

agree with you .have 22 @22mag derringers love them but to hard trigger pull thats why i  have naa

I have a Derringer in .32 but in addition to being stiff, the barrels don't print together.  At 5 to 10 feet they may be 3 or 4 inches off which is too much for what I need.  I have considered snake shot in a .38 Derringer but have decided I prefer the mini.

funny last week had 38 derringer in my hand . almost bought it but did not. price was right 139.99. my son said ill pay half . glad i did not call yesterday 3 screw ruger stainless . i have 3 screw blued.
