The NAA revolver is NOT a toy.

Saturday morning I'm visiting a friend who works in the Gander Mountain gun dept.  A customer walks up and says he's looking for .22 mag ammo for his NAA revolver.  He says, "I don't need anything expensive, the gun is just a toy".

My friend gives me a wry smile, so I strike up a conversation with the guy.  We talk about accuracy, bullets going thru two 2X4's, velocities, and what police, EMT's and forensics have said about the cartridge.  Most of what I said I've learned from all of you.

He tells me he's never heard such things and his confidence has been really boosted in considering the NAA as a serious defense piece.

Naturally I tell him to come here and do some reading as well as NAAlover's blog.

Isn't it nice to be able to educate the uneducated?

Maybe the gentleman should have said the .22 is not a serious "Offense" weapon.  With that statement, I would agree.  The .22 has been a "serious" defense" weapon for many years.  S&W made a .22 for a hideout years ago.  When they found "ladies of the night" were  using them, the guns became less popular with S&W.  As I will assume most of us are not going to attempt to take over a police station, attack a bunker, or try to kill a bunch of folks on an Army post, the .22 and .22 magnum is a very serious defense weapon.

"bullets going thru two 2X4s".  Have you tried this?  That is about the penetration I get.  Just tried my .25acp and it just barely penetrates 2 boards with no deformity.  It seems to me that the .22 mag out of a short bbl and the .25acp are very, very close.  You?

Ricart, well put.

Rj-yes; I have done actual testing with pine boards.  I posted my experiments, with pictures, here on this forum.  Winchester Super X HP and Winchester Premier scream right thru both from twelve feet away.  Sometimes CCI Mini Mags will, but not consistently.

Dyna-pointes do well for me.

Seems like a lot of people think that the NAA mini's are just "toys" but as mentioned they are obviously not very educated when it comes to fire arms either. To me this just shows their ignorance.

Simply ask them' "If it is a toy can I shoot you with it?"

I figure it could be a mis reprisented term "toy" as I reffer to my "fun guns" as toys.. I know all to well that they are tools and very dangerous but I reffer to gun shopping as "toy shopping" and the fun guns that I dont hunt or carry with as "my toys" lol if that makes any sence

Semantics at work here - I guess in one sense all my guns are toys an extension of my childhood dreams. The fact guns are dangerous and deadly is also part of the fascination.

Even a BB gun is dangerous, so in one respect it is not a toy. So maybe my guns are toys when they are in the gun cabinet or target shooting, but become tools when they are on my hip, in my pocket or aimed at some critter.

Not a toy-or a very NICE toy by virtue of being letal. The front bullets are cci maxi mag TNT at 1100 fps from the "long barrel" .22 m the rear bullets-hornady vmax,  didn't expand but averaged 1200 fps.

These were shot through a raw beef roast cut and into a jug of water.  Ive done this several times with the ccis and gotten the same results.  All others, I have tried are non-expanding but do penetrate nicely.

Mec-

What kind of penetration did the expended bullets get? When you say "long barrel" do you mean the 1 5/8"?

I am a little surprised the Hornady did not expand.

   By the way, nice picture.

Where is Naalover!!?  Do we have a new bullet king?  Has the Winchester Super X HP been toppled from its throne?

they go through about 3" of beef and into the first or second gallon water jug. Both will go through a one inch (3/4"?} pine board and half or more of the way through a 2x4. the expanding bullets probably don't penetrate as much but wood isn't an expansion medium so they both act the same shot straight into the pine.  The Hornadys are fast but they must be intended for rifle velocities- as are most if not all 22 magnum loads.

Ive shot the old WW jhp load and the cci- the original loadings of this cartrige. They will expand out to 35 yards from my 9.5" ruger single six but require  a very high velocity to do so.  I wouldn't expect any expansion at all from them from the 1 5/8" barrel.

as I recall, the original cci plated hollow point is going about 100 fps faster from this gun than the WW jhp and kind of blows up/crumbles away until the velocity goes below expansion threshold at 35 yards.  You can make the WW mushroom out to 50 yards by stressing the jacket with a pocket knife with accuracy unaffected.

The black box wwws are very good from several revolvers but I only shot two of them from the NAA. One clocked high 1000s while the second clocked 1400, the case head separated and jammed up the gun.  I stopped shooting those.

By Contrast, my baby browning 25 will get 1050s with the 35 grain speer gold dot, 850s from my 50 grain ball handload and low 700s from Remington ball. Other available ball loads I have tried clock in the high 500s and I would consider them effectively useless. A factor I have encounted with modern 25 acp ball ammunition is that the prominent rim (semi-rim) of the case will impact the case neck of the following round and jam both my baby browning Colt 1908. CCI gold dots and blazers are crimped and avoid this problem.  I crimp my reloads as well as the remington factory ball I sometimes use.
