Freedom Arms Mini vs Sterno Can

So while I was out running the dogs I came across this sterno can and decided to use it to see how a snakes head would fair against a Federal 22LR shot shell.
One shot at about 2' from my feet (maybe three :) ) shooting more or less straight down.

Decent density and decent penetration for a heavier than a beer can container.

The pellets penetrated through the can lid as well for full penetration and blew the lid off the can.

They bulged the side but did not penetrate which was not unexpected.

All in all I don't believe it was too bad for shooting a snake if needed.
My question is whether I can use the Federal 22 LR shot shells in a 22 magnum cylinder on my Sidewinder or needs to stick with the CCI shot capsule?

Dang MtGoat that's the exact same holster style I want the "KID" to make for me , that high relief scalloped and right on with all the other trim , you read my mind , its crazy ? Only difference is I want it for my top-break . So your another Freedom Arms enthusiast , cool . A reminder that there is a beautiful Freedom Arms snap over flapped suede holster on E-Bay if interested .
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

The Kid does great work.  I wear this cross draw style so it is easy to grab to shoot a rattle snake if needed.

Nice shoot'n!  The can didn't stand a chance!   ;)

A .22 LR in a magnum chamber stands a high chance of the case rupurting, with a great chance of gas and debris blowing back not your face. If the shot shell develops the same pressure, you should get the same results.

Good info.  I've never used shot because I wasn't sure it had enough penetration to kill a snake.  I may try some.

Freedom Arms is the reason I started collecting mini's in the beginning , beautiful sleek pieces , simple lines , a just want to hold kind of pieces , they feel good and real nice on the eyes . Would be cool if NAA would do a remake of some of the longer barreled pieces . The narrowness of the barrel is the first draw to see and puts it in a class of its own then its other style is the boot grips with its certain slender style , shape  . Cool stuff .

Why not just get some .22 WMR shotshells for your Sidewinder?  That's always the first round up in mine.

I like the Federal offerings better but only CCI offers the 22 magnum shot shells that I have ever found.
I am looking for Winchester shot shells as well to give them a try as they are crimped vs a capsule.
I believe that they all use #12 shot.

I guess I could compare the CCI to the Federal on paper to compare shot disbursement between the two.
I just need to find some Winchester shot shells to throw them into the mix :)

I have been told (but have not proven the point) that the crimped shot shells run at a higher velocity and have better "killing power" than the CCI offerings.
This is from anecdotal observations by others.

I would be interesting to see if you can find them.  I haven't seen the crimped shot shells in a LONG time.  Not to say they aren't around, I just wouldn't know where to get them.

That page also lists Winchester crimped shotshells. Note that the Federal load is listed as #10 shot. But then it also says it is
jacketed hollow point.

MtGoat

A number of places have Winchester crimped shot shells listed but have not had stock for over a year.
I am on a number of notification lists if they should come back into stock.

MtGoat

All three (Federal, CCI and Winchester) list the shot size as 12 shot.

Federal lists the load as 25gr
Winchester does not list the load weight but Midway states that it is 25 gr.
CCI is 31gr for 22LR and 52gr for 22 Win Mag.

No velocities were listed.

Goat,
A recent flyer put out by Bass Pro Shops advertised that Winchester is now producing 22lr shot again.

I guess that any shot,if you can get it,would be good on snakes from about 3-4 ft.  Just looking at the results of what it did to the sterno can proves that pretty well.
