I finally got to the range and fired .22 Magnums in my new Mini Master (fixed sights). 20 yards, off hand.

Winchester 40 gr. JHP worked fine, good accuracy.
CCI Maxi Mag HP+v 30 gr.  JHP worked fine. good accuracy
Hornady Critical Defense 45 gr JHP did not.  Three out of five rounds, good indentation, no fire. Tried again with NO rotation of rounds and all went off. However one round keyholed!

Case dimension ok an all rounds. However the Hornady's inserted harder and with about .001 larger diameter at the crimp. Of course longer overall due to 45 gr I had previously shot this same ammo form the same box of rounds in a Ruger Super Six, no problems.

i will not be using this ammo.  Possibly harder or thicker case at the rim. However, I can't explain the one keyhole unless the twist rate is too slow for the longer 45 gr Hornady.  I'm just commenting. Any comments or experience with the same ?

I think that I'll be looking for Speer Gold Dot if i can find them.

Thanks for your report on the Hornady, I wanted to try it. But I think I will pass now.
Gold Dots shoot very well in my Wasp 22 mag.

Hornady CD works fine in my BW and my 1 5/8 mag .

That's interesting.  I had the exact same issue with .22 WMR Critical Defense in my Pug a couple of days ago and again yesterday.  Multiple failures to fire on first strike.  The Pug has fired everything else that I have shot in it, including hundreds of Gold Dots.  I did fire 15 Critical Defense from the same box in another WMR mini, and I had no misfires.

Before I wrote off the Critical Defense, I'd try a box from a different lot. In my limited testing, the CD penetrates slightly better than the Gold Dots. Again, I emphasize slightly. I have GD n one of my carry minis and like them.

I use gold dots in my BW and Hornady in the Target Pathfinder 4" I have had no problems with either, but I give the Hornadys the extra barrel length because in some tests the expansion is slightly less reliable at velocities generated with a 2" barrel. I have had problems with Maxi Mag HP 40 gr keyholing in both guns.

Yeah, I would try another box of CD's but can't find them or even the Gold Dots. I'm presently going with CCI maxi mag v.  No problems with the CCI but I need more range time. I have about 200 CCI's, more than enough when loading five at a time, LOL. The 30 grainer  might not be right for a BUG, except for feral dogs, etc.

I've been around too long to label things as junk.  I use Hornadys Critical Defense in my Sig 320 .40, my  .44 Bulldog, and my I did in my Glock.  Good ammo. I'm using 124 gr.Gold Dot LE in my 9mm Kimber Raptor.

For the range I tend to use Maxi Mag HP+Vs 30 grains; faster velocities and no keyholing, and not bad penetration as backup for the zombie apocalypse. I save the Gold Dots for carry. I did however, just order 3 boxes of each the other day when they were available.

Good old Wal-Marts just picked up three boxes of lowly CCI long rifle lead heads for $3.49 a box with plenty on the shelf . Anything that goes bang is good enough for me .

Although my experience is limited, I got more penetration out of the Gold Dot when fired from a few feet away. For contact shots, they both are about the same.
