Got some friends here in Texas that ran into a 5'  rattler and shot it with a .22 mag mini shot load.  Unfortunately in their excitement they hit it behind the head which did not kill the snake which was as thick as your arm.  BUT it did stun the snake sufficiently to allow a head shot with a CCI Mini Mag.  Saw the skin, saw the holes!  Which proves again everything depends on shot placement!  Remember, do not shoot at the snake.  Shoot at the head!  Here's my 'always', back pocket snake protector.  First up is shot, then solids.

No but when I leave Crown King I take the Senator Highway to the road that goes out to Mayer and Highway 69, just for a change of scenery and makes it a whole day trip  :D

Take the Senator from Crown King to Prescott sometime, a beautiful drive indeed. And watch for critters, lots of Deer, Turkey, etc. on top of the Bradshaw's. It is a days drive for the whole trip but well worth the time.

The shotshell may not go all the way through the jug but I for sure wouldn't want to take a blast of that in the face at 5-10 feet. Yowsers that would hurt.

Uncle_Lee

Question??
If there is someone who is threatening you with a knife and you shoot that person in the face with shot and it blinds them so that they drop the knife, do you shoot them with a hollow point and face murder charges or do you face a blind person in court suing you for everything you have and more???

If that knife is dropped, the aggression is over.
If there are witnesses, you are in big trouble. (maybe)

Good question, you are right, you'll be in court either way. I'm thinking the one shot to the face will end it but who knows what you'll do in that situation. I pray I never find out but I'm hoping I'm ready if it does come up.
We just had a concealed carry shooting where I live in my small town outside Raleigh, NC. Very interesting and scary. Guy steals (get this) 10 bras from Walmart and is seen so he runs. He runs back behind the store and heads to a 2 story office building in the woods. He forces his way into an office where there is one lady by herself. She is the business owner and was there finishing up some work (I think it was like 7pm). He heads for her and she pulls her pistol and shoots him. They are still not releasing details but so far it looks like this guy has quite a few priors and one of them was assaulting a female. This lady is in her mid 50's and was ready. The guy is in critical condition but I can't find out anything else about it.
It can happen at any time. I showed my wife the story but I still can't get her to take any classes or get her concealed.
This stuff is real.

Bigbird48

Never bring a knife to a gun fight. The guy with the knife should retreat when he see's your gun, if not just keep shooting. Cops do it all the time 10 cops will empty their semis into a guy even after he drops they keep shooting.

Bigbird48

I don't have my 4x4 here now can it be done in a front wheel drive SUV

I am just bringing out that with a shot shell, you may just blind the person.
That person may get a year for attempted robbery.
You may pay for the rest of your life for blinding him/her.

I too am concerned about the possibility of the long-term legal consequences should I need to shoot at an attacker with ANY round.  But my normal carry is with a shotshell up first.  That's because my primary reason to carry is for snake/vermin control.  I'm certainly NOT going to take time to manually cycle the cylinder past the shotshell if I'm being attacked.  I will naively hope that the courts will view my use of a shotshell as evidence that I did not intend with premeditation to inflict immediate death, but fired only to stop the threat with the tool I had available.

With the courts being so screwed up as they seem to be I wouldn't doubt being held libel for this perks disability if your without a expensive ambulance chaser . Read the other day this robber of a store was stopped by a guy with a chair and that guys being run thru the courts for I believe excessive force . We live in a strange new world when it comes to monetary gains .

swolf,
Thanks for reposting the shotshell tests. I'll have to try those other brands. I tested those CCI's years ago from a long barrel 22 revolver and was very unimpressed. Never trusted them to be decent snake medicine. I generally use a 12 ga for the water moccasins and Diamondbacks that occasionally show up in my yard (my house is near a creek here in Florida). When going in the woods, I carry a couple three big shotshells loaded in my 3" barreled 44 mag. Round butt and bobbed hammer makes it surprisingly carry-able, but it would be much nicer to have enough confidence in some 22 shotshells to carry my magnum mini instead.

In Illinois the civil cases can get very strange.  News story a few years ago that the juries in the East St Louis area were so biased, that lawyers tried to get all their cases heard in Madison and St.Clair counties.   The jury awards had driven all the OBY/GYN doctors out of the area, and the residents were complaining that they were having to drive up to 60 miles to find a doctor.

Been a few years, but a retired farm couple set a trap in their vacant house that had many antiques in it, prowler, "who had never been in trouble" was injured inside the house, and ended up owing the eighty acres when the court system was through.

I shot a shot shell today in my 22lr mini. Had a good dense pattern at 8 feet. I also shot one out of my solo 9mm. Great dense pattern also, but the good thing was it ejected and I immediately followed with a hollow point. The solo will make a better snake gun.

That is because it is illegal on the federal level to make a trap to protect your 'stuff' with a firearm...

My BW got a good workout with shotshells last week.  I spent a couple nights in a farmhouse that has been unoccupied for a couple years and rodents roam freely.  I don't like how weak CCI shotshells are, but they turned out to be the perfect thing for indoor shots.  One big pack rat took two shots to put him down, but mice went easy.  I did get a good amount of ricochet, but that was better than blast holes in the floor.  Wasn't too loud either--I was worried the farmer across the road would be startled to hear shots at 1 am.

I bought a box of Speer .45 capsules to use in my Leined .45/410 and Taurus Judge.  I haven't loaded any yet, but intended to load pepper rounds and plastic BBs for less-lethal critter control.  My swan shot would be perfect in those shells for snakes and other vermin.

Just a word on loading them.  You will screw up a few.  You may not need to flair the case mouth to load them.

Crimping them is tricky. Use just the slightest crimp you can get.    If you make it just a little to tight you will hear a faint "click".
The capsule will crack. You will not see the crack but it will fall apart in your hand or from recoil in the cylinder.
