Speaking of speed loaders......

I just read the thread on the folly of speed loaders. I agree that a defensive reload is an unlikely solution to an ongoing situation, but they sure could be handy at the range!

As it happens, I just received an email from The Absaroka Kid regarding some speed loader pouches he's working on - here's the email and the photos....

QuoteAttached are several photos...(proto - types)  of accessories for the NAA Mini's and for the recent Ranger....
The photo on the left is for the Speed Loader...(Star concho's can be had instead of the brass studs) which holds 2 speed loaders either in Mag or LR........The pouch on the right holds spare cylinders either loaded and or ready to be loaded and installed...A vacant spot allows the user to place the magnum cylinder and being able to pick out a loaded Cylinder for placement....Or you can have several cylinders of the same caliber ready for shooting....Space is allowed for the extractor pin on the Ranger cylinders.....They will be available in all colors and weaves including the scalloped design...
All of my current designs from pocket holsters to concealment to thumb snaps to my Western Model 97's will be available for the Ranger II.....
The pouches are truly nice when it comes to a third hand and quick reloading....The cylinder pouch allows the speed loader enough room for insertion......
The speed loaders are a little sensitive to harsh movement and banging around which can dislodge the cartridges from their position...the reason why I designed a way to keep them upright and sort of free floating...There is a hardwood protector/separator within the leather pouch on both pouches for  that reason ...The cylinders are held the same way....the only way to keep them upright and at the right depth for easy retrieval.....

That's all I  know - if you are interested or have questions, contact the Kid at [email protected]

I do use speed loaders at the range. It helps me keep track of the rounds per target...

Those are nice, almost worth carrying speedloaders just so you can have two of those!! :)

While I don't always carry a reload of any type, and I'm sure one is unnecessary in 90+% of situations I do feel like you can go through 5,6 or 7 shots awfully quickly in a panic situation, so a reload could be more necessary than we assume. Based on videos of some Police shootings I've seen they can sure go through 10 or 15 rounds in a heartbeat of often missing with the vast majority, it's hard to know how we will react, so on balance Iean towards needing a reload or 2 firearms.

I typically try to carry at least one reload with me.
I need to look into the speed strips as they would make it nicer to carry than a speed loader or a ammo wallet.
I have some 6 round ammo carriers from Kramer leather that I carry with my 44 special.
A couple of reloads of Buffalo Bore should be enough. :D

This sort of shows what a reloader can do if the shooter can do.

Look at the whole thing, but the reload fun begins at 57 seconds into the vid.

I just don't carry a reload for my mini.  But I LOVE my 5-Star reloaders for my other revolvers.  As I stated in a previous thread, they operate CCW as opposed to CW like most others that rolls the cylinders closed when releasing the rounds.

I have 5 star and HKS and Safariland speedloaders, I prefer the Safariland as all you do is pus the rounds into the cylinder, that is what releases them, and then close the cylinder.  Quick and easy and this is how I have carried my revolvers for years, with two speedloaders.  I practice my reloads at the range too so if something does happen, I should be able to reload as I move from one place to another and keep my eyes on the target so my next shot is on target.

I have been carrying a revolver for the most part for my whole life.  Speedloaders make a fast reload much faster and easier and a few in a speed strips make it posible to fill the cylinder back up in a break in the action.

I did not say I do not carry a reload. Said I use the speedloaders at the range to keep track of my shots to target. In a picture on daily carry you can see my reload pouch of 5 rounds. I have a second with er...9 rounds. I just don't like the bulk of a speedloader until I have to wear a coat in winter.

Right now the only reloading device I have is a "Polish" reload (A.K.A. a second mini)...... Not sure why they call it a "Polish" reload......  Note: I have used speed strips in the past.  They work well when loading two rounds at a time.  Kind of unwieldy on the single "fifth round", however.

Well, usually it is called the New York Reload but who knows ?

Know a retired Illinois State Trooper, who shocked all his former co-workers after he retired when they found out that his carry piece was a J frame, and no reload,  "you only have five shots".  His reply was that if he did his job right, and he needed more shots, there should be a couple of Glocks or Hi-Points laying there he could pick up and use.

That is my current work knife. It is a Buck Bantam #283e. It replaced a Buck #181  that I left at a show. I use that one the most right now, but I also carry 3 others on occasion. They are in order a Sarge made from a kit (with Walnut scales), a Gerber 500 that I put a clip on, and a Opinel Brevette #7 sold through Coughlan's a while ago.
I think the pattern on the Buck was called snakeskin.

Thank You Canoeal!  That first one really looks good to me.  I love copper and it has a copper look to it.  Probably not going to be able to find one but I will look and I will say again, it looks great.  Thanks again! :)

I also love Opinels and have a few.  I will show them off as soon as I am able.  I am going to modify some of them so they look nicer (IMO) so they will also be shown again once they are done.

Call me weird but every time I pick up one of my knives I have to and pick up a fine stone and sharpen it again . Impulse sharpening ,no cure.

You have corrected me!  I thought that the Gerber I've carried forever was an "LST".  It is in fact, a Gerber 500.  GREAT little, inexpensive, indestructable knife.

Canoeal (and anyone else interested)-
If you have a use for them I have quite a few pocket clips from the Kershaw Blur knives I will never use. Any one who could use a couple, send me a PM with an address.

A lot of these 500s were sold/given away with advertizing on them. Mine was ecthed the Danner's logo. They are/were a boot company.

I forget who it was, one of the old LEO gun guru's, but someone asked why he still used a revolver in an age of high capacity semi's. His blunt reply was; "I ain't planning on missing that much."

Ruger

I posted a note on the Tuff Products website, asking if they would make a speed strip type loader that was in the configuration of the NAA Ranger cylinder, holding 5 rounds, for both 22lr & 22mag.  I was surprised that I received an answer, and the same day!  They thought that was an interesting idea and was turning it over to their development group for consideration.

Let me say that, like all of the rest of us, I appreciate good customer service.  Was this an honest reply, or one just to satisfy a customer request?  Doesn't matter to me.  I liked it.  ;D

For the Minis; you could purchase a few extra cylinders from NAA and use them as Speed Loaders at the Range. Shouldn't be hard to devise a cap to hold them in if you wanted an extra in your pocket either.

ikoiko

For a cap to hold rounds in an extra cylinder, floor protectors that you put on chair legs work. Home Depot, Lowe's, etc carry them. As does someone on eBay selling them for a mark-up.

Good idea .................... practice reloading is not a bad idea either.

Yeah I just came across the video and thought I'd post it for another option to those looking for a speed loading solution.

I just carry 1 or 2 extra mags for my Kahr CM9.  I DO use these DS 10 Speed loaders for my NAA Minis at the range. These DS-530-LR loaders combined with the extractor and the loading box have made all the difference in the world to make shooting the NAA revolvers a real pleasure! (Photo from DS-10-Speed site)
