New Pug problems...

Hey guys, I'm having tough luck right now! My Ranger ll is back at the factory for some work,  unable to cycle the hammer back with no ammunition in the cylinder.  While still wanting to play with something new, I went out and purchased my first Pug today! So happy, love the way it feels, looks etc. etc. etc. Purchased some gold dot, short barrel ammo and some crap Aguila...

After a proper cleaning and oiling, off to the woods we go. Loaded the Gold Dot and after the second shot I could NOT cycle the hammer back. I fiddled with it, pushed in the cases Best I could and fired again but it jammed again. Only could fire 4 rounds. I took it apart and extracted the cases. Some stuck worse than others and then tried the Aguila. Only fired one round and it was totally jammed... not having other Ammo to try at that time I ended my first outing... I will try some Hornady CD I have tomorrow.. if it does the same, I guess NAA will have two of my Guns back for work... Arggggg Thoughts before I send it back???

HELP!!!

UPDATE... Hornady did the same thing this AM... Already received an email from Service and it will be headed back on Monday.

Desperately wanting to love NAA but... 😳

Gobbletn - if Gold Dot does not work I would be surprised if anything does. That stuff has never not worked in any of my NAAs. I have to say that if my first experiences with NAA had been like yours then I might not be the fan that I am. I really do not have any suggestions since I have not had the kind of problems that you are having. Except - have you had the grips off of your Pug? there is a tiny pin under the grips on the left side: called the bolt pin that can come out. And if it does, the hammer will not cycle properly.

Adk.IBO

I ran 105 rounds through my new Pug's LR cylinder in short order using DS10's range box and experienced not what I would call several full on jams, but I had to drop the hammer back down and cock it a second time. Never happened with my previously owned magnum Wasp, but in fairness I didn't have the range box then and never ran that many rounds through in one outing. It's definitely a concern for a gun that will be used for CCW. I need to do the same with my magnum cylinder before I will fully trust it. The dealer had sent it to NAA for the LR cylinder before offering it up for sale on GB as the Talo Pug did not offer it. I am confident NAA will make it right if necessary, and I have other carry options... You are not alone. If I experience it again I will take the LaserLyte off and check the bolt pin situation. Thanks.

Stay safe, John

Don't give up on them just yet. Sounds like you aren't. I've owned 4 NAA's over the years (not counting my two new Rangers) and never had a single problem with any of them. Some members here have mind-boggling numbers of their guns.

RogueTS1

I had that happen on one .22 mag round when fired through my Pug. It was the casing bulged some and jammed up tight against the cylinder face causing so much friction the cylinder would not turn. I had to fidget with it to remove the cylinder but once I pulled the case from the cylinder and reloaded I have not had another problem.

It was just that one cartridge. Never again.

Hey Dinadan, the grip had never been removed, but I did remove just to check and verify the bolt pin. It was there and looks flush and proper. I have some pearl magnum grips that was intended for my Ranger ll, since it is back at NAA for work I replaced it with them. I gotta say, I like the look and smaller grip profile. I will go try the Hornady CD and some CCIs I have but like you said, if the CCI Gold Dot is not working I guess nothing will. It will go back on Monday if I can get a reply from Jessica or someone else. I'm sure they are tired from the shot show...

Okay, I understand the ranger is a new gun and has teething problems. But the pug is a time proven gun and this kind of stuff is not acceptable. What the heck is going on at NAA?

I'm still feeling hesitant to buy a new black widow!

I hate to say it but I'm starting to feel the same way. I hope NAA hasn't let their QC slip on other models while concentrating on the Ranger II. I'm now glad that I didn't get in on the EB Rangers. I'm not a collector so if and when I get one it would be a carry gun. I hope they get it right and don't discontinue the Ranger II.

Absolutely nothing will kill a company quicker than an unreliable product and constent callbacks . Seeing I'm a collector I have no idea if my guns can or will shoot reliably and consistently and that's something that worries me with these mini's after hearing these issues . I have not and will not carry a mini with magnums for defense , really not needed and 22 l.r. is a proven round with these NAA's , period . Besides quality control is a major issue in any company , callbacks attended to at first but soon that stops because of failed sales no matter how friendly the personal are . Minding the shop personally is very important going to gun shows are better for write offs , want better P.R. buy a T.V. slot .
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

I'm curious about how long the OP's Pug may have sat on a shelf in inventory before it was sold to him.  It's possible that it was manufactured before R&D even started on the Ranger 2.  I'm not sure it's fair to condemn NAA's quality across the board based on problems with a new model (Ranger 2) and one or two problematic examples of older model guns.  The 3 I have recently acquired (Earl, Black Widow, and Mini Master) all have smooth chambers and nice machine work, and function flawlessly.   I have had some trouble keeping the adjustable rear sight set on my Mini Master, but that's the only problem I've run across.

How recent was your purchases?

I'm not a collector. I will be carrying this black widow like Ihave carried my .22lr mini for the past three plus decades as personal protection. I have to now that when I thumb back that hammer, it's gonna work. Yes, most the trouble is the rangers, but I'm disturb by reports of new pugs and black widows having problems. These are simple solid frame single action revolvers that have a long production history. There shouldn't be any problems if they are being test fired before they leave the factory.

Within the past couple of months. I carry mine, too.  And I have a pair of old 1 5/8" Magnums I've owned for over ten years.

There are many hundreds of people are who buying and using NAA revolvers that aren't having problems with them.  They just aren't posting on this forum that their guns are working properly.

I can understand why someone would be hesitant to buy a Ranger 2, with the numerous problems reported with them by many people.  I wouldn't buy one either.  But I'd have no compunction about buying any of their solid frame revolvers.  The couple of reports of problems with those seem anecdotal to me.

I will be returning my Pug tomorrow. I wonder if the quality of the later builds are going down? The Rangers are coming out with various manufacturing blemishes that are totally unacceptable. It's frustrating to try to fire a Pug, tried and true, only to have the problems I discussed. Maybe that's why it cost very little.... The previous owner obviously did not trust it with the problem listed...

I am not sure that one can blame the manufacturer for flaws in a used firearm. I have to confess that I have screwed up a firearm myself. I just didn't try to foist it off on someone else! I just sent the gun back for repair and then kept it.

Were did you read the BW was having a problem I must have missed that post

I haven't heard of any BW issues either. My year old BW has never had any issues.

That's why I am returning it.... I appears perfect and unfired. So back to NAA it goes. I guess I'm just so frustrated after my Ranger experience... I should stop posting for a while and cool down. I simply just want one of my two NAAs to work... seems reasonable to me but maybe not to all.

This is just an assumption; but maybe you or the previous owner has/had been doing what I see very often with those unfamiliar with the NAA Minis when they first get them.................... That is during the unloading and loading process they do not pull the hammer to half cock and then they try and wiggle out or in the cylinder. Sometimes they are taking the cylinder out to the left side of the pistol too.

All these things put an unnecessary amount of force on that small cylinder bolt as well as the firing pin. If the pistol is put on half cock the cylinder will come out very easily to the right side leaving the cylinder bolt unforced.

I see this done very often when first loading/unloading as well as a lot of fumbling when trying to get the hammer into the safety notches. I see this done at the LGS very often by those selling them. IMO it would not take a lot of bumbling, not saying you are doing this, to break a single action pistol.  :-[

I'm sorry... let me clarify... new to me... at a dealer but previously owned.... I'm sorry, I should have made that clear...  with lifetime warranty, I figured all would be ok with a ultra clean Pug...

OK but it has been mentioned that sometime people screw up their gun and then pawn them off on other people. I'm sure gunbroker has no way of knowing if the gun is good or not, and dealers who buy guns or take them in trade don't take them out and shoot them to see if there good they do a visual like you did and all seemed well. So you can't really blame NAA for a faulty gun that you got
used from someone else.

Yes and I'm sure NAA will find the problem and fix it :)

beornls

I've had several NAA's over years, mostly .22 LR versions.  Last year I think it was I got my first magnum, a PUG.   I had some light strike issues with it on my first range trip.

I sent it back to NAA and they fixed it very quickly and had it back to me with a replaced cylinder.  No issues since beyond one light strike that did fire the second time around in the cylinder.

A new black widow is on my radar now, but now admittedly I'm a bit worried.  But I just remind myself, they WILL make it right if I have issues.

OV-1D

Heck some LGS's aren't the brightest lightbulb either . Those guys tinkering with a new gun sometimes fouls things up , one intense I had the guy (LGS) tried removing the cylinder pin on a Freedom Arms mini with a pair of pliers no less because he wasn't smart enough to realize it rotated 180 degrees to remove , WHAT A MORON . Needless to say he ate that one I ordered from GunBroker , the jerk buggered up the pin in doing so , gotta trust your LGS . This guy was a new find for receiving any pieces I bought my tried and true LGS was on vacation at the time . Myself I don't want anyone touching my weapon before I do just because .

I don't have a LGS we have one FFL a guy in town that just does transfers out of his house, and he's the only one for 30 miles around. He always opens my gun before he calls and say it in. I hate to tell him not to touch it till I get there for fear he might say go else were. Which means a 60 mile round trip drive to pick up my gun :(

LHB

My local FFL opens every box that comes in, to record the serial number in his FFL records, and if you don't like it, he will tell you to go into Peoria and pay the city standard $75.00.
