Snake shot

Hello folks, first post here. From what I have read you all seem civil and that's a good feeling.
In 1988 I purchased an NAA L.R. revolver. People at the range that haven't seen one get a kick out of it.
Would it be safe to fire a snake shot round through this little guy? I have one set up in the first hole of the cylinder with 4 hollow points to follow.

There are multiple forum members that carry a similar loading scheme to what you're asking. Don't know if they use a magnum frame or an lr frame mini, but I don't see it making a difference.

Welcome to the Forum.

You're good to go.  You can shoot all of the shotshells that you can afford in a NAA mini.  The magnum ones are more effective in my experience on snakes.  A bit more range, a better pattern and a slightly larger shot.  Federal (LR) and CCI (LR and Magnum) seem to work the best.

I do not advocate them for a self-defense load.  There are some who say they intend to blind their attacker with a shotshell blast to the face with the first shot.  The only people who will come out ahead in that scenario are the lawyers.

Go for it and welcome to the forum.

Uncle Fatso

I do what you are proposing but with .22 Magnum in my Black Widow.  Snake loads won't hurt your gun a bit.  The 22LR capsule type are considerably more effective than the crimped loads, in my experience.

Tilkut

Concur with recent posts. I have used CCI  22 mag capsuled shot shells for years and they are effective.  Killed a 56" north Texas rattler 2 days ago.  I have a Black widow that I have carried forever.  We have a lot of rattlers here and it takes 'em out.  No damage or effects on function or accuracy.
Side note-  I have carried the NAA  more than the several other CCW guns I have owned due to size & concealability in hot weather.
It stopped a robbery and an assault without a shot fired in either case.  As the Scouts say, "Be prepared".

I have fired the snake shot out of both the LR and Mag cylinders of my B/W with great results.  With my old eyes, I carry only the ball ammo, however in my EDC as I hope any shooting I have to do is "across the poker table".

Uncle Lee, I do not have the ability to put photos in my posts.  In fact, my copy equipment is outdated and frankly, and I'm too cheap to replace it.

However, by your reasoning that if we don't have a picture, it don't exist.  I have the painting (copy) of the "Last Supper" hanging in my living room, but know of no actual photo of Christ.  So, does that mean He don't exist?  Just asking.

Rick you have a cell phone and or a computer you can post Pic's its pretty easy :)

JRobyn

That's exactly how I carry my EDC, either Sidewinder or Ranger II.  Even the bedside j-frame has one round of snake shot up first.

welcome thebeat!!!

I never really felt the need to do my loading that way.  I live in a less rural area and carry mine again two footed fiends.  I am sure it works well on snakes and other little beasts though.  I have shot some of them through my Black Widow, seems like it would work great against those. 8)

I have a dedicated shotshell pistol.  It's a 1 1/8" barrel .22 mag mini that I keep loaded with CCI .22 mag shotshells.  It is for yard work and woods walks.  I used it on several copperheads in the garage to good effect with no damage to the garage.  My wife started scattering mothballs along the walls in the garage a couple of years ago and since then the snakes have stayed away.  The Pugs stay loaded with Hornady Critical Defense.

I too am a Shot shell user! First out the barrel of my Wasp cylinder, followed by the Gold Dots in 22 mag.

Well Mr. Place,
I believe that Christ exists therefore I don't need proof.
We don't know if what you say is true therefore we need proof.

Thebeat,

First of all, WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!  Lots of great folks here (watch out for Uncle Lee though,he will tell you to store the mini in a shoe box)

Shoot all the snake shot you want out of the minis. For SD,not a good idea though.

You only have one mini??   That will change soon as they tend to "multiply".

Yeah, it's called Addonitis . . Initially it is hard to diagnose, but after the first bout it returns periodically when you least expect it.

On my training walk with the bird dogs I carry a BW with 2 snake shots up front. Not so much for snakes but there are a couple of Great Danes that seem immune to pepper spray but not to snake shots. I also carry something large in case they get immune to snake shot.

Big bird, to some extent you are correct re my having a cell phone and computer.  I have been trying to escape from all the newer gadgets for 22 years.  My cell phone does not have "text" ability, had it removed.  It is an old Motorola Razor model.  Not sure how I would transfer photos from it to my computer.  I do not have a copier on my computer, seldom care to copy anything.  I am on this site due to my interest in guns in general, NAA minis in particular. I will ask my grandchildren re your post of how simple posting photos would be with the equipment I have.  Frankly, being a 3rd generation Texan and 80 years old,  we could all go back to riding horses except for cleaning up the streets.

Canoeal

In the Summer months  keep a shot shell in rotation. However since it is not the primary reason I carry, I keep it last in order. It would be easy to move it to shoot, and in other cases I don't think I would have the time....

All you have to do is take a pic with the phone and email it to yourself, then just up load the pic from your computer :)

You should be able to plug your phone charging cable directly into the computer.  The phone will then act like another drive and you can copy the photos (in the DCIM folder) directly to your PC.  You might have to install some drivers for the phone to be correctly recognized as a mass storage device.

I tried .38 snake shot out of a J frame at 5 feet, was surprised at how sparse the pattern was. Don't think I would trust it to have an effect! Is the 22 snake shot that much better?

I've killed numerous rattlers with CCI snake loads. Using mostly .22 magnum and .38 special loads. While the patterns are pretty uninspiring, they're pretty effective at up to maybe 6'. The .22LR snake loads much less so in my experience.

ray

I bought my first naa to shoot snake shot 22mag best then I bought bw I think federal 22 shot shell is better than cci with the black widow ill load 2 federal shot shell @3 cci stingers that's when im to lazy to put mag cyl in @ I like cci stinger velocity out of a black widow equal or better than some 22mag

Kinda like me!  Welcome, Tilkut, to the forum---

Been out of town for a few days and wow what a response to my query. Thank you all for your interest and educating me. I will feel at ease using snake shot.
Of course I have no idea what information I've missed from past posts but in any case would like to put this out there.
Recently cleaned my mini and discovered the hammer could not be cocked. Removed the grip and yep, packed with pocket lint.
First time I had removed a grip since I purchased the unit in '88.
Glad I hadn't needed it. Doubt this will enlighten most of you as you seem very experienced but I think worth passing along.

I keep three rounds of snake shot in my .22LR  for walks in the woods.  Have had a dog bitten by a rattler (wasn't there that day) and don't want that experience with the result again.  Haven't had the occasion to fire the rounds other than into a melon just to see the pattern and depth.

Please allow me to ad my Welcome! to the list. I use to carry a snake shot to come out first. Once I learned how little it penetrates, I stopped and went to 5 normal rounds. As to hurting your revolver,: NO, it does not. The shot is soft lead encased in plastic. It will not hurt the steel barrel.

Just to pick up on something said earlier, Since when did we object to stretching the truth a little?  One should never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

If I want a good story, I pickup a book (or a Kindle e-reader).

I come to the forums to learn about NAAs and other firearms.  I'd much rather have facts than fiction.

This forum is filled full of facts, fiction, stories, but mostly a good time.  Good luck with the Dragnet thing . . .just the facts, ma'am. . . .

Then check the treads for NAA, other guns and the like. Stories is for just that, so if you don't want them look elsewhere. Oh Politics and Rreligion is one you may want to skip, as they are not about gun material and meant to educate you. You get what is where you go.
