Ranger II misfires

I purchased a NAA Ranger II last May. I love the looks , feel and concealability, but after 2 trips back to NAA, I am still experiencing a lot of misfires, from many different types of ammunition.

I am getting misfires about 30% of the time, with CCI, Hornady, Speer and Winchester ammo, everything I have tried. The misfired cases always show light primer hits. Usually a 2nd strike will fire the round.

NAA has had two chances to fix the problem. I just get an invoice back detailing which parts they have replaced, with no indication they have test fired the gun. Last time they replaced the cylinder and main spring.

Has anyone else had misfires to this extent with this gun?

Welcome to the forum gwbeyer.

I have had a couple ftf but nothing to the extent of what you are describing

Hey . . . . . gwbeyer . . . . . . WELCOME to the Forum!  Glad to have you! We need your comments, concerns, opinions and pictures.  Don't be shy or a lurker; step up to the firing line often!

And . . .no, no FTF with my Ranger IIs.  Both seem to function well, and although I have both cylinders, I limit the ammo I use to 22 mag Spear Gold Dot Hollow Points, so they haven't run the gambit of ammo brands.

I run CCI, Blazers, a bunch of others no ftf, I did have a couple  ftf in my BW BJ but I had some cheap thunderbolts and it  was  just a couple

Seems like NAA could have fixed this easy. Can't figure why your still having trouble :-\

The picture shows a typical case after a misfire and subsequent 2nd, successful firing. The first dent is obviously too light. Is the second dent typical for those of you with Ranger IIs?

Sounds like they need to make it right.

But just to eliminate the last possibility do you have a bunch of used ammo or stuff stored in very hot or humid conditions?

I've had plenty of Ranger II issues, but not that one, nor have I heard of others with this problem. It seems this is one area where there shouldn't be trouble, because the hammer and hammer spring part is going to be pretty much the same as other models, apart from some issue with the cylinder/barrel section moving around, I don't see why this would occur.

I can't tell whether my RangerIIs misfire or not.  They are too hard to cock so I don't even bother to shoot them.  NAA fixed them but they are still too hard to shoot.

My EB Ranger functions fine except for the ejection problem after a cylinder or two--have sanded and polished all I feel I should and will send it to have NAA fix the problem(hopefully)and the sights(hopefully)...The only problem I have had with ammo is one of the Eley rounds and after firing one or two rounds the cylinder will not rotate....but have no problem with any other ammo.....

I haven't fired mine in what seems like forever, I go to the range to relax, not to be stressed by various mechanical issues, I understand what you're saying even though hard cocking is not my particular issue.

My Ranger ll is at the shop now for failure to fire  and too hard to cock.  It is an EB and has been back a few times

I'm gonna come clean now and let you guys know that I'm a gunsmith. If this was a customer's gun, I'd have torn into it to see what the problem is, but I want to preserve the factory warranty.

I have a suspicion what the problem is. Often, when I hand cycle the gun, by cocking the hammer, and squeezing the trigger while controlling the hammer fall, I will feel the trigger sear nose slightly catching on the half cock notch ledge. If this is happening during live fire, it is very likely the culprit.

NAA said last time that they would have their master gunsmith look at the gun. I cannot tell whether this happened or not, I just got a list of the parts they replaced...

I've been waiting to return mine for the 3rd time, I'm hoping that given time they'll get the problems sorted and then they can get it fixed. However, I still feel there are fundamental issues with some of the Ranger II design that will never have it working how I'd want it too. The mechanism by which the cylinder is retained being the most obvious one.

i detailed my original Ranger II woes here:

http://naaminis.com/smf/index.php?topic=16483.0

this consisted of - at first - the inability to seat the hammer into a safety slot, followed by light strikes using a variety of ammo...

subsequently i found that the top of the hammer (and the side) was sometimes being impinged on full travel - this was evidenced by wear marks on the side of the hammer and 'denting' on the top tip of the hammer...

i ended up putting several hundred rounds through the revolver and the problem of light strikes dissipated to a great degree (once maybe in 60 rounds)...

especially when using CCI Maxi Mag .22 Magnum 30 grain TNT JHP rounds:

i did not send my Ranger II back to NAA, but if the problem of light strikes worsens instead of completely going away i will

hope this helps...

I hope these problems are addressed and done away with then and only then when you guys with say all is good and give it a grade A+ will I buy one , but not just yet . When the Ranger 1 came out I waited and paid $200 - $600 over list because I wanted a viable working no problem piece and it worked out ... kinda . I did buy four or five at the time and got my money back from resale of the others .
