Conversion Cylinders: are they available for NAA black powder revolvers? I saw some advertised on eBay but I am skeptical of something I can not get my hands on and take back to dealer if defective? Little help?anyone own one? Know someone who's owned one?

grayelky

First, Welcome!

Best help I can offer is to call NAA and ask -801-374-9990. They are very friendly and very customer oriented! Since no one seems to know for sure, let us know what they have to say! :)

Thanks. I emailed and reply came back: none that they know of. That makes me wonder: what was this guy on eBay selling?

Question: have you owned NAA cap and ball revolvers? I like mine--I like the way it looks and I like the way it fits in my pocket--but I wish it would fire five shots without the cylinder jamming up. Any idea why that is happening?

Welcome, Robbie.

That conversion cylinder looks good, Uncle Lee. But notice the price. You could get a Magnum Mini with both Mag and LR cylinders for only about $50 more. It sounds as if Robbie wants something that will shoot reliably more than something to fiddle around with, so I would really recommend a Magnum Mini instead of a conversion cylinder.

The only reason I could think of that anyone would buy that would be if they are not allowed to buy a gun. I have always wondered why any conversion cylinders cost so much. The first one I saw was  at the first Reno NRA convention & I thought it was neat until I saw the price. That has never changed.

Yep, I got that sense too; same as on another thread...

Maybe it's a bad firearm or maybe it's me but the revolver I have jams up after I fire couple rounds through it. I'm tired of sending it in for repairs and NAA is probably tired of hearing from me. That is why I would like to buy a conversion cylinder: salvage something from the investment. To me that is the most sensible thing to do.

theysayimnotme

For about the same price you can buy another pistol (with only one cylinder) so the question remains, why? Besides even with a new cylinder it's quite likely you would still have the same problem.

Did you check your caps and bullets to see if they are rubbing the frame??

I have dabbled briefly with a black powder revolver. I am no expert, barely a novice. I will comment that there is a lot to know about BP and revolvers. Sometimes it seemed like the more I read the more there was to learn! Yes I had jam ups. Eventually I acquired a profound respect for the fellows who used one of those percussion revolvers day in and day out for the three decades or so that they were standard.

I am guessing that your NAA is your first BP revolver. I have not shot a BP Mini, but I suspect that the miniature size compounds the difficulty of getting everything to work properly together. You are not going to salvage your investment by spending as much for a new cylinder as for a new Mini. I suggest just resigning yourself to shooting the BP Mini at the range for fun and getting a Magnum Mini to carry!

Seeing we're talking black powder my question is if it gets wet can it be dried out properly to use again and the new Pyrodex also can that be wet and dried out ? I know some of you out there are well versed in this stuff ,thanks .

Black powder is made wet & then dried out. If it gets wet again it can, within reason, be dried out & used.

grayelky

Wet and then dry it? I just learned something new!

So did I. I looked it up on the internet.

Uncle_Lee

They have to make it wet.
If it was dry, it would explode when it was being crushed.

I seem to remember reading that in the old days they would grind the separate components into powders, then mix them up (very carefully) into gunpowder and then dampen the mix. At some point the cake of damp gunpowder would be the right texture to be milled into granules of appropriate size. Tiny grains for tiny revolvers and rather large grains for cannon.

Thanks guys I learned a lot also . Was reading about frontier days and wondered just what they did with wet powder besides throwing it away being as costly as it could be . Those were some tough days of living especially being outdoors most the time and dealing with the weathers , must have been Irishmen with a few Germans thrown in , ha , ha , ha  ..  ;)

Irish Protestant part immigrated to the colonies in the 1760's. By 1780 owned property in historical Lancaster county (now split into three counties) Seemingly as a family married a lot of local PA Germans. My Grandmother's maiden name was Ostrander. They made a lot of good guns in Lancaster...

If you believe about Adam and Eve literally, we are all descended from one couple. They had at least six children, who had children by marrying each other.

It's even later/closer than that.   I was taught that 250 years ago the average human was born, lived their life, and died, and never got over twenty miles from home, unless there was a war or some huge natural disaster.   That's the reason that all the inhabitants in those German mountain valleys, or Norse fjords, or Scottish glens were related, and it carried over into America.   There was actually some basis for the old traveling salesman jokes, that was new genes into the gene pool, even though they didn't know about genes.
