From a 1” WASP use top .22 LR or .22 MAG ammo for pocket protection?

From a 1" WASP what would the difference be between Gold Dot .22 Mag 40 grams and CCI  VELOCITOR .22LR?

Is there enough difference to offset the noise and brightness of the MAG?

Or if the same punch from only one inch barrel is the noise/brightness the added bonus?

Thoughts please.

Out of a one inch barrel i expect that neither caliber has enough velocity for significant bullet expansion. The .22 WMR will give you deeper penetration and a larger temporary wound channel, and at contact range you would have more gases from muzzle blast enter the wound. The elevated muzzle blast and noise should also be a bit of a deterrent, especially at night. I do not see any advantage in using the .22 LR over the .22 WMR for defense. Practice with the LR cylinder if you wish but carry with the magnum cylinder. Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Defense and Winchester 40 grain JHP would be my magnum choices and in that order. When I chronographed Velocitor out of one of my .1-1/8" 22 LR minis I got between 794 and 815 fps. The magnum ammo  probably adds about 100 fps to that out of the same barrel length.

Agreed. While my card does not include 1" barrel because NAAs charts do not, looking at the difference in rounds from CCI brands of 22 LR and standard 22 mag rounds out of the 1 1/8 barrel you will notice there is a difference. Out of a pug? Mann's chart shows 740 fps from Gold dots...( Mann's 1" test gun was his Pug...)
Another thought, both Gold Dots and Hornady CD use faster burning, low flash powder...JMR

I think all who carry NAAs should read this; https://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2015/6/8/the-22-magnum-for-self-defense
While it is several years old, it does put it all into perspective.

BTW, for those of you interested, A 1 5/8" Wasp fits into the original BO Box...

Not to be picky, rather to be accurate, the Wasp has a 1 1/8" barrel. Only the Pug comes with a 1" barrel from the factory.

Many will argue the magnum needs a longer barrel to fully realize its potential. That is true. It still will have a little more velocity than a LR. When "it" hits the fan, I want every little bit of help I can get.

As to ammunition, do yourself a favor and fire any ammo under consideration in the dark, or at least very low light. It is easy to tell Gold Dot and Critical Defense from any other magnum ammo, due to the noticeable reduced muzzle flash. I have not bothered to fire LR ammo in low light. For my $.02 worth, I pick Critical Defense over Gold Dot by a VERY slight margin. In my limited tests, it seems to penetrate slightly more. Slightly. In just the last week I have found, for the first time, Winchester PDX1 22 mag in stock. It is advertised to be for 2" barreled guns along the lines of the Hornady and Speer offerings. When I have the chance to test it, I will report the results here.

So is the Winchester PDX1 22 mag ammunition 40 gr or 45 gr?
It is advertised both ways and an added 10% in weight would not be a bad thing.

Yeah, I caught that too. I went with it because the next post was about the Pug. That is why I posted both sets of data. As all here know I am not the short barrel fan, or 22 LR fan. I want the most bang for my buck. Mine are the BW and 1 5/8" Wasp...I don't think you can go wrong with either the Hornady CD or Gold Dots. Just for Me...
