The 10 year old just started school. She is taking band. Just came home with a drum kit. GOD HELP US. I want to teach her how it is done. Drum solos--- Who would you suggest?   Xavier Cugat?  Show me your age!

TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

Honestly Old I always shied away from loud noise when younger . Give me a bottle of Boonesfarm Strawberry hill and I was good along with a good bong or two .. More easy listening tunes kinda if there were any back when BUT NO Californian tie dye noise makers . More bluegrass if anything of such in those days past . :)

Reda Darwish. I've danced more than one drum solo to his playing! ;)

OLD and GRUMPY

Told my kid if you want to play guitar you listen to Hendrix and Clapton even if you don't like them. Clarinet? You listen to Goodman and ST John Coaltrain. Don't have to like them but you listen to the best.   I came home one day and Jimmy's   Star Spangeled Banner was shaking the walls. Little blond white boy was channiling Jimmy!

I found a bugle for 5$ at a yard sale. The 5 year old now thinks she is a elephant! I keep in locked in the gun case with the other noise makers!

From what I remember the gun case is a fine place for a five year old till at least 10-11 . Ha , ha . :)   Good luck with those drums though , glad its you and not me especially if close by .

I was a full time pianist/arranger for 25 years before switching to the sciences. This is what I told music students and parents during that time.

Let the student explore and find her own favorites. This is far more motivating than pushing what you liked during the middle ages. You can help widen their horizons with lots of different genres but let them be the judge. Find a good teacher who plays what the student likes. A good teacher will not be cheap, but will prevent bad habits from forming that limit the student's future.

The most important attribute for a good drummer is a rock solid sense of time. When the other band members get excited and start to rush (common among kids), a good drummer will keep them in line. This is far more important than a flashy solo. An early mentor of mine chided me after I was showing off, saying, "You know you aren't getting paid by the note." It took me years to put that into practice. Count Basie's band was known among musicians as having perfect time. Even though it will seems like ancient history, listening to Basie play a very slow ballad, paying attention to the time, is ear opening.

O&G, I assume you have lots of ear protection for the range. It will come in handy during practicing!

BTW - When adults tee me off, I buy their kids a cheap/toy drum set, just to put them through the wringer..... ;)

Barry, I'm sure you know how to tell if it's a not-very-good drummer who's come to your front door.
For everybody else: the knock keeps speeding up.

If they're too dumb to ring the bell I'm not interested.

Thanks. Went well with first cup at 4am.  Watching the dancer move I now have back pain. Just another reason for girls to not be too skinny.

Belly Dance is often VERY good for those with back pain. I know LOTS of dancers who got their start because of a messed up back, and were sent by their doctor. There was even another guy in one class I was in - an older gentleman - who was there for the back therapy. He wasn't interested in performing with us, but his doc told him that "If he (the patient) were a woman, he (the doc) would send him (the patient) to a Belly Dance class..." Guy said, "If it'll help my back, I'll go!" And he did!
