In the past I have made  snap caps for 12ga.  Art supply erasers cut and stuck in the primer pocket.  Any better ideas?  Odd ball rounds don't have anything in the shop.

I don't know about shotguns, but for .22LR the yellow plastic wall anchors for screws work well.

I have used those. They work well. I am thinking center fire.

Here's the real scoop:
Erasers and drywall anchors (and hot melt glue, etc.) does nothing to protect your firing pin. These materials offer almost no resistance-the firing pin simply penetrates them.
Buy real snap caps.

I have bought the metal 22 cal snap caps on Amazon---seem pretty good
