Hunting with a Mini

Anyone used their mini for hunting? Seems quite impractical to me, but a 4 inch Earl, Mini Master or Ranger might be possible (the hogleg even more so). Heck, maybe even a 2 or 2.5 inch barrel could work. What do I know?

I only carry my Mini (BW) in case trouble comes hunting me...........  8)

What are you gonna hunt? Mice? (Mouse gun, get it?)  ;D

Wonder if that man eating jackrabbit that attacked the peanut farmer is still around?

You'd be surprised how much damage rabbits and squirrels can do if they have no choice.

Three- or four-inch barrel, long rifle or magnum rounds, sounds like the equivalent of my Single Six at less than 1/4 the weight.

Bearcatter I just have to shine in about your gravely mis-underestimated view of a 22 . Either your a couch commander or someone who knows nothing of firearms . Its eating me up reading ALL your posts about bull , most of the time , concerning just about everything under the sun but especially posting about a mini's abilities to kill . Penetration is what does the damage not so much as caliber . Anything that needs killing has a sweet spot , anything , distance is the other key ingredient on slow or fast death but again death is a coming ..I know folks that hunt deer quite regularly with 22's , rifle or long barreled hand guns .The longer the barrel the farther the kill shot . So again calibers don't kill placement does . I know some morons that hunt and really don't care about where they hit their target just hit and the animal suffering real well till these jokers catch up with the blood trail , SO FREAKING WRONG I'D like to shoot them instead . There are good righteous hunters that actually hunt with good placement then there are those who hunt from the truck cabs and maybe bother to chase down their prey , especially if nobody is around ............................................................. after all that DON'T BUY JUNK GUNS buy quality ..  8) 8)

My mice comment was a joke, OV. I do not underestimate the .22. I've said a few times here that my carry would be a .22, if it was centerfire. I don't trust rimfire ignition. John Browning intended the .25 to be a centerfire .22, but .25 was as small as he could go and still fit a primer.
I don't carry a .25 because the only good .25 pistols are antiques and ammo is scarce, even in good times. So that moved me up to .32.
You mentioned penetration being a key factor. The 32 penetration is as good as it needs to be, on par with a .380.
So the 32 is as large as I need to go.

I hope you really meant the LIKE button and weren't just being sarcastic.

Yup, this is what I was thinking....or a myriad of other "kit gun"... ruger bearcat, smith j frames, charter arms pathfinder etc.

I do see the humor. But maybe tree rat or rabbit. Possibly possum or coon. What about bullfrog or iguana or maybe even gator?

I don't think I rate OV's rant. I've never said anything against a 22's '"ability to kill". Did you even read my reply? I've never doubted a 22's performance except being a rimfire it's less dependable. Like I said in my reply, I'd carry a centerfire 22.

Sounds okay with some critter that won't fight back. Gators, or armadillos, you might ought to use magnum. I understand LR bounces off of both. OV is ready to go bear hunting with his minis, with the right shot placement.(another joke, OV)

Sounds like it is the "time of the month" for OV-1D.  Mark the calendar and see how sarcastic he can be next month.

KEN AR

OK to get back on topic...
Hunting with a NAA.  I'll say that I gave my son in law a 1 5/8" Mini Magnum to take care of Copperheads he was finding all around their new home.  It had belonged to his Grandmother and the first spring they lived there he kept finding Copperheads everywhere.

He used that Magnum with CCI Shot shells to eliminate over 20+ Copperheads.  It kills them from a safe distance.
Now it has also killed a few armadillos and possums. These were all shots under 15' or so. Point being that he had it in his pocket when needed and it took care of the issues.

They have now moved out to the Family farm on 80 acres of land and we are using my Mini Master out there for longer shots at snakes and other varmints.  We also have Ruger Single Six's and 22/45's that we use when going out in the evenings to hunt varmints. Once again the Mini Master is light and much smaller than the other pistols so it goes on just about every ride around the property on the ATV with one of us. Yes I leave many of my guns out there and that way I can have what I want to use and not say darn wish I had brought that out here.  The 80 acres are used for cattle grazing and the property is surrounded by Lumber company forest.  Deer and Turkey are seen daily in large numbers sharing the pastures with the cows.

So yes, I would say the NAA works for "hunting" within it's limitations of barrel length and sight options. I would not buy one as a hunting gun but they do dispatch snakes and small vermin very well.

I'm glad you're feeling more calm today. Do you plan the rants, or do they just pop up?    ;D

Every day I wake up happy that I get another day.
Then OV comes on and makes me think "Is all this worth living for?".  ;D ;D ;D
Problem is that I agree with most of what he rants over.
I keep my rants kind of quite so as not get on the "list".

Or maybe something more sinister?  We call this one the "Silent Hunter." Her possibilities are endless. ::)
