Ok, so I'm gearing up to take my CCW class here soon but I've realized I may have a dilemma. My main sidearm was bought for home protection so I really can't make it my EDC. How do you guys feel about 22lr for EDC? It's looking like my mini lr will be my EDC for a while until I can save enough to buy something new. I was considering trading in or selling my mini lr so I can get a 22mag. Keeping in mind it's getting cold out so with winter clothing and all would it be much of a difference if I upgraded to the 22mag? I really like the Black Widow it reminds me of a mini Colt Python almost so I definitely wouldn't mind having a BW in the stable. I think when I eventually do get a new mini it'll be the BW forsure, I was looking at the sidewinder but I really think I want the BW now. The thing is, is it worth trading my mini lr for? I know everyone's going to say keep the lr and get the BW too but that's out of the question right now. I'm either going to have to sell one of mine to put towards it or save for good period time then get it. I'm thinking if I can't get anything else right now and I do have to carry the lr I'm definitely going to pick up the new 22lr punch from federal we were discussing recently. Anyway let me know what you guys think. It's looking like it's 22lr for me for a while so

I bought my BW first for an EDC. I am good with that.

I started with the Mini-Mag 1 1/8 as my EDC. Then I switched to the BW for the added power from the longer barrel. Recently I switched to a Mini-Mag 1 5/8 as a compromise because it felt lighter and less bulky in the pocket. I think the 1 5/8 Mini-Mag is going to remain my EDC.

I carry a Sheriff for CCW and my wife carries a BW for CCW. Both are .22mag and .22lr. I would recommend getting the BW if you can. Even better, get both cylinders if possible. You can always get the .22lr later if you cant right now. But, I would definately recommend stepping up to the BW. If you cant, the standard .22lr mini will be fine.

Most days my main carry is my Pug. It?s easy to have and to conceal and I forget it?s even there during my workday. On my days off I may add a Ruger LCP 380 or and LCR in 357. But always the Pug.

heyjoe

i would just keep the 22 lr for now and save up for the black widow until you have enough

And by the way, I am in the ".22lr is good enough" camp. I feel .22lr is plenty for most personal defense situations.

While my first was a BW, I too bought a 1 5/8" Wasp as a second...both work.

@Canoeal: Where did you get those wood grips. They look great!

Maybe not .22lr so much for EDC but I toted a Pug on my belt with a cross draw holster under my shirt to work everyday for 7 years before I retired. No one ever knew and I never needed it but to me it was so self-assuring and simply better than nothing at all if a critical situation should arise.
I feel the same for .22lr although of course not as effective!
Bone breaking Federal WMR hollow points with bullet weight 50 and velocity at 1530 is nothing to dismiss for EDC.
;)

i have some of this coming in next week...

purported Technical Information:

    Caliber: 22 Long Rifle
    Bullet Weight: 30 Grains
Bullet Style: Hyper Velocity Plated Lead Hollow Point
    Casing: Brass

    Ballistics Information:
    Muzzle Velocity: 1700 fps
    Velocity Rating: Hyper Velocity
    Muzzle Energy: 204 ft. lbs.

Ozark75

I thought I had read somewhere that you should not shoot hypervelocity in your NAA. I may be wrong as I can't remember where I heard/read this.

OV-1D

If I'm not mistaken its reads that in the gun manual that comes with the gun . Besides I think those hot 22 magnum loads are too much for the longevity of the gun not alone being a 22 magnum . 22 mags were made for rifles to begin with , they are so hard on a mini pistol . One guys opinion anyhow .   ???

From the manual:

AMMUNITION
Hyper velocity ammunition may be used as well as .22 shot loads. If the firearm you
purchased was a .22 Magnum Convertible (.22 LR/.22 Magnum), two cylinders were provided;
they are marked "LR" and "M" respectively.

WARNING: Do not use any PMC 22 caliber ammunition (Magnum and/or Long Rifle) in
any model of NAA revolvers which may cause a double-discharge (two rounds
simultaneously discharging, one aligned in the barrel and the other out of the battery cylinder).

shanep0017

I think I'm just going to buy the best ammo I can find for the lr until im able to upgrade. I definitely want those new Punch rounds but since those aren't exactly available at the moment I'm thinking either Velocitors or Stingers. You guys prefer one over the other? I know everyone loves Stingers but I feel like the Velocitors will penatrate better out of a mini for some reason. I can find gel test videos all day for the Stingers but not one video testing the Velocitors out of a mini.

Well I hope NAA is keeping up with all these new types of ammo along with other manufactures because those outfits are not going to issue any warnings . My advice stick to the tried and true and don't experiment unless your willing to except the consequences . :)

Okay let's think about it. High velocity, heavy loads of .22 mag ammo might do some damage to the gun barrel in repetitive use but how often will you actually shoot it? I mean I've had my Pug for 10 years plus and thankfully have never needed to pull it from the holster. I've only fired it  couple times at the range since I bought it.
you may not need it but you should have it

I shoot my .22LR most trips to the range.  Granted I don’t crank a lot of hypervelocity ammo through it (I’m too cheap) but do fire a cylinderful occasionally.  I have a buddy who gave me a peanut butter jar of 22 ammo he loaded with pyrodex (somewhere he found 10k primed brass and bullets) that I love to shoot. Accurate and mild recoil.  I do crank a few cylinders of both mag and LR though my BUG, but that’s my primary backup and I do that to change out the ammo a few times a year.  I’ve found the Punch is pretty accurate and I?m satisfied with that for my LR carry load.

I carry a 22 sometimes, depends where I'm going. I carry a Ruger LCR or a LCP II. I prefer 40 gr. bullets, usually mini mags or velociters. I'm not locked into one carry gun. Sometimes I carry a 38, sometimes a 9mm, sometimes a Wasp or Sidewinder 22 mag. I live in a small town, and don't usually go out at night. Not too many crazies where I live, but you never know.

Thank you; I made them. One set is figured Walnut (BW), as I have a bunch of that right now, the other is Cherry.

.22lr can win the fight probably 98% of the time, especially if it doesn't have to be fired at all, or shoot first, hit first...it is not ideal, but does satisfy rule #1, have a gun...when we carry our .22lr it is loaded with either stingers or velocitors, but we like to practice with much slower velocity ammo, easier on our old hands...we are thinking about acquiring an naa in .22wmr, but that is probably next summer at the earliest...

Uncle_Lee

Folks should watch some of the comparisons on You Tube.
I have watched a few and some of them are amazing.
The Punch 22lr is showing off pretty good in the gel.

Grease filling the end of each cylinder in a black powder revolver prevents multiple cylinders from going off at once when one cylinder is fired.  Black Powder is the key here.

Greetings:

My Conceal Carry is the Mini-Magnum 4 inch barrel.  Federal has come out with its 22LR Punch ammo that packs a sizeable amount of muzzle velocity (over 100 FPS out of a 2 inch barrel). This ammo make NAA very practical for EDC.

Ya, that goes back to black powder revolver shooting.

(going to loose you again)

You didn't have to grease the semi autos.
Why not????
There wasn't any.

IMO the new 22 Punch is the best thing to ever happen to the 22lr, especially for the NAA mini. Now that I've seen what these rounds can do from a mini it definitely put my mind at ease. I really don't think you'll find a better performer.

.

My EDC is a .22mag Black Widow convertible - which I CCW with the magnum cylinder installed.

I live in a suberb where it's excellent for urban coyotes & viscious dogs, while walking my own dog in parks, etc.

Have you had that BW since new? Must be more than a few years old with that pin.

I base what I do on the specs and fitting it in my pocket... Here is what I put together a few years ago...That is why I bought a .22 mag BW first.
