wife wants a gun

After all the shootings recently in places where most law abiding citizens visit my wife now says she wants a gun in her purse. She tried my Ruger Single Six in 22 WMR and then my Pug and she didn't like the recoil so I know the only thing for her is in .22Lr. Of course the only thing available at NAA is the NAA-22LLR. I think she can handle it and it fits in her purse and she knows it is only a deterrent and not a deadly weapon but better than nothing. However I don't care for the original grips. They are not that functional or user friendly IMHO. Options are the Long Rifle Boot Grip, the Long Rifle Oversized Wood Grips or the Long Rifle White Simulated Pearl Grip in which I think she would like for looks but they are smaller than the other two.
Anybody out there have the NAA-22LLR? What grips do you have?

  Getting a gun is fine but knowing how ,when , where, why counts more than carrying a weapon,  well its just as important anyways . Novices are also targets for bad guys for all sorts of reasons .

You might consider a magnum frame with 22lr conversion cylinder i.e., Black Widow, Sheriff, Earl. Longer barrel to eek out just a little more performance from 22lr and larger frame is easier to handle / manipulate / use, but not too large.

Nice to see that your wife made a choice and you are helping her with the selection.

If none of the NAAs seem to "fit" her,maybe she could try a Ruger LCR in 22lr??  Or maybe an LCP II in 22lr?

Just a thought.

Every one always forgets the little 22 short. It can be fired in any 22 revolver or single shot rifle.  Yes I know it it not a 9mm or 44mag. but if hands are weak or hurt there is little recoil even in the lightest gun. I took Mini on a first date. Fed her 5 different rounds in the same cylinder. 1 stinger,1 mini mag, 1 Blazer , 1 Win short hollow point,  and last and the least 1 Aquila  Colibri (no powder 300fps?). Starting with the stinger  (big blast) the recoil dropped off with each until the short felt like a misfire. Colibri just went pop.  Even in my 1 1/8" mini the short had almost no recoil.  This is just a idea to think about.

You could have her look at a 327 Mag snubby or even a 38 special snubby. The LCR is lightweight as are a number of other S&W as well as Taurus revolvers. Then simply load it up with some 32 S&W Longs/Shorts, or 38 Colt Longs/Shorts. These would give only slightly more recoil than a .22 LR but with quite a bit harder hitting round and center-fire reliability should she ever have to pull that trigger. 

PS: Best grips for one of these Minis, if that is the direction she decides to go, is a Magnum Framed Mini with the Secret Service Wooden grips. Small enough to slide into a pocket un-noticed and yet more than enough grip to use decisively.

i second getting a black widow with a lr cylinder. it has a better grip, is easier to handle and manipulate, is still very small and light.

i also second a slightly larger gun in which you can use 32 smith and wesson long. the larger gun will have an even better grip than the minis and its larger size will make it easier to fire accurately. They are still relatively small and relatively light guns.  The 32 smith and wesson  long is a very mild round recoil wise.

Regardless of which gun your wife chooses make sure she keeps it in a holster in her purse.

There is a drawback to getting a convertible and shooting it as a 22lr, the trigger pull and hammer pull are harder.  But since you have a Pug she an try that part first.

A simple 22llr with the holster grip is fantastic if you are ok with the .5 second extra draw time to fold it out.

The ergonomics are bad, they are single action, hard to shoot, and in minimal calibers.
The NAA guns are pretty much expert's guns.
Take a look at the Keltec P32 and similar guns. Easier to shoot well, extremely light weight, much more capacity and more effective chambering.

My wife, who is very recoil sensitive, loves her Ruger LCP II 22lr.  She hates my Kel-Tec P32.
The Ruger is great for cc, 10 rd mags, no recoil, and goes bang every time, with the right ammo, which is HV.

I am very partial to my sidewinder with oversized grip.  She hates it.

She has experience with handguns. She wants something lightweight that won't weigh down her purse. Prefers single action because that's what she is most comfortable with.

Well she's decided on the PUG! And of course she's taking mine so that leaves me open to my next NAA purchase. I would go for the Ranger II but it's just not available anywhere in short time so thinking on the Earl, BW or another Pug.

My two cents...

Smith&Wesson Air Weight loaded with wadcutters. Low recoil and will put someone on the ground.
If she likes NAA revolvers, 22LR with 1 5/8th barrel (with oversized grip) or the Black Widow in 22LR.
As you know, recoil can be snappy in the shorter barrel models but as the barrel lengthens the snappiness reduces.

I've got a few 1 1/8th barrel models and used to carry one, but kept having trouble getting back on target.
Went to a 1 5/8th barrel, potato grips (since move to CV grips) and it was a breeze to get back on target quickly for the second shot.
