Cylinder Drag Line Normal?

I recently purchased a NAA Sidewinder. It has a cylinder drag drag line after minimal use. You can see as the action cycles the hand drops about midway through the rotation of the cylinder and drags until it locks in place. I sent a video to NAA and they said their gunsmith said it was ?normal?. I?ve always understood that a properly set up revolver should not develop a wear line through normal use as the timing should be such that the hand drops into place in the slot and not along the cylinder. I?d appreciate some i put on what is correct in this scenario. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

I am not an expert. I do believe that every revolver eventually gets a drag line on the cylinder. If NAA said it?s normal and you are not having mechanical problems then I would say it is ok. I have 4 NAA cylinders I?ll check them later and let know if they have drag lines. I assume they all do.

I have a nice S&w model 60 that I know has a drag line and a Webley in 45 autorim that also has drag  a drag line.

I never heard that they are not supposed to get drag lines. Look up flame cutting on revolvers. I didn?t know that was a thing until a few years ago. It is also no big deal. Always lots to learn. I am sure the more experienced (old) guys will chime in and let you know for sure. 😁

It is a very rare if not unknown for any revolver that is used more than a bit to have the cylinder scoring you speak of. Many say otherwise but take a look at any revolver that has been shot more than every once in a while and you will find cylinder scoring. While it is possible to have a revolver with a super tune not have this scoring, sooner or later the action will wear and the scoring will begin to show. That, and most would not be willing to pay for the cost of the tuning of said revolver.

It s the nature of the beast...revolvers. I have never seen a revolver that has been used that did not have a score line

FWIW, once the line develops a shiny polish, the wear basically stops.

If the bolt is smooth.
If the bolt is rough, the dig will continue.

.

Drag line = cylinder timing is off.(usually)

I say usually because some maker's initial set up is to have the locking bolt drag a bit to ensure a good lockup; other maker's don't.

IDK NAA's set up method - but none of my Mini's ever developed a drag line.

I had other brand(s) of revolver that did get a drag line, and had them timed so as to not let the bolt drag.

Poor lockup can cause a DA revolver skip a chamber under the duress of rapid DA firing. (BT, BT, NTS)

To get a good lockup on the cylinder, an angled cut leads in to the bolt slot. Normally this is true.
The bolt should not touch the cylinder until it reaches this cut.
