It is interesting, I think, that the .22 short was developed in 1857 for Smith & Wesson revolvers specifically  as a self-defense cartridge!  Now they are regarded by many as little better than a sharp stick.  My how attitudes have changed.  I guess human beings have gotten a lot tougher since 1857.   ;)

Anything with any penetration wasn't a great idea with no antibiotics invented yet . People back then were pretty foul in hygiene practices also . Alcohol and sulfur the only defenses against germs which were everywhere especially on the people themselves , dirty world back then . ::) ::).

And aside from infection back then if you killed someone you'd better have real good justification . Wounding someone in those days was more lenient then of course if they died anyways but still questionable about death if the full max of the law would be given ..   ;)

To be fair, you would be more likely to become seriously ill or eventually die from a .22 short in 1857 than today due to advancements in modern medicine. That alone would be a deterrent to a would be agressor in times past.

But, to be clear, I carry a 22lr with confidence as my edc.

While it is true that eventual death from lack of emergency medical care and from infection were much more likely in the 19th century than today (where the overall survival rate from being shot with a handgun stands at a whopping 80%!), I don't buy that in the middle of a gunfight the aggressor gives up, thinking, "I had better watch out for that .22, it might kill me a week from now!"   ;)

And when Smith & Wesson designed the cartridge I doubt they were saying to buyers, "Well, it doesn't do much damage right away, but just wait three days and it really puts a hurt on!"  ;D

No, my guess is the designers at S&W were going for a small but potentially lethal round that would fit into their new small pocket revolvers.  But we all know what happened.  The desire for more effective ammunition led to the .22 long .22LR, and eventually the .22WMR.

Still, it's a good thing that the advocates for gun control don't know much about the history of the .22 short, or they'd realize it was developed as an assault weapon and try to ban it!  (This is just a joke.  Not an invitation to go all nuts about gun control.  Can't we all just get along?)   ;)

LHB

I remember the first time I ever heard of angel dust back in the 60's, was in Guns Magazine, in which a California police officer shot an attacking druggie five times with 12 gauge slugs.  The druggie then took the empty shotgun from the office and beat him to death with the empty shot gun.   The story said that the five slugs in the chest had destroyed the heart and lungs, but didn't put the man down.

OV-1D

That guy had to be a heavily stoned beast to take that punishment , its almost unbelievable but true . Head shots work the best so practice ,practice and more practice . John Wick style . ;) ;)

I was actually trying to think of something that wouldn't apply.

Water balloons? It would get tiresome at some point where you left the person alone.
Twinkies? Same.
English Peas? Maybe the same.
BB's? Yep.
Wet socks? Definitely. Especially if they've been worn for a while.

I know what you're thinking.
Did he fire 5 shots, or only 4?
Well, what with all this excitement, I kinda lost track myself.
But being this is a NAA .22 short, the least powerful handgun in the world - blow your earlobe right off!
You gotta ask yourself one question...
Do I feel lucky?
Well do ya, PUNK?

(Yes, I know its a .22s pistol on top of a box of .22LR ammo)

You guys need to quit sniping. Maybe 50+ posts is enough, and we need a new topic. .22 Short is getting a little stale anyway. ..  ::)

I could always restart my boring topics?  ..  ;D

Had one (9mm) Rogue but that trigger guard (the square edge) kept digging into the side edge of my finger (very ,very irritating) being it rested right there all the time when shooting . Sure thick leather gloves would have worked but I'd sweat to death in the process . So away it went and good riddance ,spent the money on my Kimber 45 the short version . Kinda not overjoyed with it being the back of the grip frame is a little too short to fit my hand properly . Silly me should have bought another Colt 1911 instead , still might . Cool thing is the 1911 and the Kimber use the same magazines so I'll have plenty ..   ;) ;)

Joe... I'm sorry you had such a terrible childhood and can no longer play nice with others.
But that isn't my problem. If you want to discuss what you feel is "stupid" in my posts, please do so with some organization.
Glad to discuss things and always open to learn new things or discover when I'm wrong.

You don't know me just as I don't know you. For all I know you may be a nice person who simply is a butt wipe online.
If you can't discuss things with civility, please don't. Shame this forum doesn't have an ignore button (and if it does someone point it out) which would solve a lot of this horse crap.

If a moderator wants to lock this discussion, I'm fine with it and would appreciate it. And if this gets me into trouble with TOS, my apologies. I tried to tone it down as much as I could. But there's only so much one can take without speaking up.

I agree that Coppertop's reply about the .22 short is irresponsible and just plain wrong.

Any cartridge can fail to stop. I know a man who was shot in the chest with a 12 gauge at 10 feet. He ran 35 yards and lived.

Getting shot in the chest with a short MIGHT sting, or it MIGHT drop them like a rock. Regardless, idiotic comments like his should not be made, as OTHER idiots read them and take them as gospel.

The .22 short can kill. It can kill instantly. Or, it can fail like any other cartridge.
