Who wants a .17 HM2 mini?

For some reason I got an interest to look into .17 caliber rimfires and while a rifle wouldn't do much for me currently, I thought about the .17 in a handgun. For anything semi auto the HM2 could have some potential in competitions, while for a revolver I couldn't conclude if either the HMR or HM2 was better than a .22 Mag in a J frame or larger for self defense.

However, I thought more on the HM2 and have a theory that because of the bullet profile that the spitzer bullet would penetrate better than .22 LR could in a short enough barrel and given that NAA makes a .22 LR only frame that is smaller than the .22 Mag, there could be potential for it.

Obviously, the bullets are jacketed, so they won't deform as easily as plated lead and the velocity would be much higher than .22 LR, and the recoil would be half as much, which may not sound like much given we're talking .22's, but in a mini revolver the recoil is very noticeable and it can slow down the firing process.

Ammo cost is definitely always there, but compared to other premium .22 LR the HM2 isn't that expensive and frankly I don't shoot the NAA revolvers enough for any ammo to break the bank. I know NAA tried to make a .17 HMR Black Widow and there were issues with those, but for HM2 it's possible those issues wouldn't be an issue.

Thoughts?

Typically speaking, bottle neck cases ammo does not play well with revolvers. The recoil tends to force the case reward, which usually results in locking up the cylinder. Best of my memory, the last bottle neck revolver was a Taurus Hunting revolver (sorry, the name escapes me). I don?t know if they still produce it.

When the 17 HMR was announced, just about everyone who made a 22 mag revolver, including NAA, tooled up and started producing 17 HMR. Everyone forgot why the 22 Jet was no longer available. If you send a 17 HMR in to NAA, they will return a new 22 mag to you.

I am fortunate enough to have one BW in 17 HMR. It is unfired, in the box with the original receipt and the original box of ammo purchased with the gun.

Taurus still makes the .17 HMR Tracker and Ruger has also continued to produce the .17 in the Single Six.
