Gut shot?

I lost the article, but read about a veteran cop who had been in many gunfights. Says that his concealed carry is a .22 Magnum NAA. Also said that .22 Magnum shot to the gut will stop a bad guy, no matter how big he is. This have me thinking if there might be some truth to this. A gut is a bigger target than a headshot. Can't imagine keep fighting if my belly hurts that much.

Gut shot may stop a normal person. A drug addict on a high, I seriously doubt it. A very determined drug addict, again I doubt it. Former military? Not likely. I?ll still go for a center mass hit, and a 3rd to the head.

In western days being gut shot was a death warrant but todays large heavy dressed fellows and on drugs I'd stick in ear ,nose ,eyes especially being in close . Even the throat by all mean just very messy so bring paper towels ,ha ..

I live in Florida, so nobody goes heavily dressed.  On an ideal world, if I could cherry-pick my shot, it would be something like in the middle of the eyes.  But I'm thinking a real situation, say within 10 feet, aggresive, moving target.  I guess first shot, center of mass.  If I get time for a 2nd shot, then head.  :-\

I would prefer if going small to have my .32acp Guardian as a minimum carry 3 quick shots to the gut and a couple higher might give you a good escape. My LR mini is more or less my dog walking or taking a brisk walk alone gun especially at night. Lots of critters in my area come out at night which pose no problem unless they are sick. Came close once to an aggressive fox with mange dog walking it felt good to have that mini. Fortunately it ran away with a quick shout.

With things getting the way they are now, I will probably keep a high cap 9 in the car.
I would stick a 12 gauge in there but it would get ripped off while I was out of it.

Bird shot to the head (eye area) will certainly stop just about anybody cold enough to help you think of another shot . :o :o

If you fire a handgun at another person SHOOT TO KILL AND HAVE dang GOOD REASON TO!!!
If you don't you are a moron~end of story!
Shooting someone with birdshot of any caliber is a free ticket to jail and lose everything you have...in two seconds flat!

bleak_window

It might have been Paco Kelly, working undercover.  He used to carry a little 2-shot .22 mag derringer.  I believe an ER doc told him to put the first one in the gut - even a big guy will double over in pain, then you can decide if a head shot is required.

bill_deshivs

Chopprs is absolutely correct.
If you shoot a gun at someone, you are using deadly force-whether you use bird shot or a cannon. It doesn't matter in the eyes of the law.

Center-mass shots are recommended.

One can not rely on pain to stop a determined, drugged, or crazy assailant. While it MAY stop them, it may not.

I hope I don't freeze thinking do I want to run a load thru my un-shot Ranger 1 . Ha ,Ha.  ;) ;)

Since you are never going to sell it, a few rounds will not make any difference to you.

My age gets to the forefront of my thinking ever once in a while.
When I die, what is my wife going to do with all my little goodies?
I have talked to 3 dealers about selling them for her on consignment........Nope, won't touch them.
I have tried to sell them and that is a mess.

I believe as many firearms that are being sold most of these gun dealers are broke as too not being able to buy other peoples weapons . Unless its something that will shoot semi-auto either rifle or pistol and maybe small double action pistols . Very few actually want or know the true value of other guns . But again these guys are working on shoe string budgets just to stay open .Collectors are getting fewer and farther between around the country and lets not forget the State and Federal paperwork for everything they do . Being in the gun business is really a big workout these days . All the if's and's and don't on selling has become a great chore for any and all little guys not alone the rents of the buildings they rent .  Seems they are forcing them to sell out of their trunks of their cars just to put food on the table . Just advertise being a collector your looking to sell your arsenal but any contact should be in front of a local sheriff's or police office to play it safe . Never ever let them know your address by all means and never drive directly home in case of being followed . I figure two (three) out of five people are no goods so be very , very careful unless you want to have to test your accuracy on purpose , Ha .   ::) ::) .

You do have a point about folks wanting semis. I do not know how much stuff you have, but if (for example) your collection was more guns than a typical small shop has in inventory, then I can see how a shop owner might not want to take on that kind of task. I believe that a lot of old men are concerned about the problems of disposing of their collections of stuff. Even knives can can take a lot of effort to sell, and that is with no paperwork. So far, I have not seen any perfect solutons.

I have more minis than the 3 shops here have in total handguns. Most folks around here carry 9s and 45s in semi's and 38 spl in revolvers.
I have 12 little 25s.
Few people carry a 25 anymore.

I've been selling some of mine at the gun club I belong to. That way I know I'm selling to like minded people.

My dad, a WWII veteran who had to teach a bunch of city guys how to shoot, taught me the 3 shot rule  1st shot in the gut ; 2nd shot center mass ; 3rd shot to the head.

I have told my wife to just not worry about my stuff if I die. (I am 70) It is not a significant percentage of our worth. No where close to even one percent because I am not a big purchaser of guns and knives, my two loves. Just boxing the stuff and leaving it in the garage will not make one bit of difference to her life style. She replied that I should be the same way with her jewelry. The monetary value of the stuff will not matter al all to which ever of us two lasts longest. We have daughter who is quite fond of guns and knives (my influence) and jewels (my wife's influence). She can sort out out stuff or dispose of it however she wants.

This thread has wandered far afield. Sorry, ApacheDan!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I carried credentials many years ago, and have been shot in the gut with both .38 specials and a 9mm. None of them stopped or slowed me from returning fire. In one situation, the guy I was with had a vest and took three .38 special rounds. He was knocked down and had the breath knocked out of him. Part of the equation is the guy being shot.

All that said I daily carry a NAA .22LR except when I'm carrying a .22 short - as backups. My primary carry is a Springfield Armory XDs in .45 ACP.
