With no off topic section, don't know if I can post this. Does anybody shoot steel target? I never have, and have always been afraid to. If anyone does, can you give me some advice. Ricocheting has always been my main worry.

Used to shoot steel years ago.   Steel needs to be hard enough and thick enough that what you are shooting doesn't crater the target, or you will have problems.   Back in the day, when it was called action shooting, my club had two plate racks, and we required only lead bullets, no jackets, and I don't remember the minimum distance that we had to stay back to avoid splash back.   Then some tactca-cool fool decided to try his AR on the plates, cratered them, and the plate racks disappeared.
I think our minimum distance for lead pistol bullets was ten yards.

Sometimes I look at the various steel targets at academy and bps. The spinners and such. I think they all have a minimum distance warning. And the minimum distance is more than the maximim distance I shoot my BW.

We have steel targets during the winter at my gun club on the outdoor pistol action range. They have side and top shields to deflect any shrapnel toward the ground. I'm so fortunate to have a beautiful private club with indoor pistol outdoor pistol and pistol action range archery range and rifle range. We have a nice clubhouse with a food counter and bar. Of course having 1 drink is off limits to the ranges. You must qualify for each range so safety is paramount. All this for under $200.00 a year! I've been a member since the early 80's.

You really are fortunate to have all that for only $ 200 bucks a year . :)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

Believe me I know and I don't take it for granted. In my younger years of going to public ranges and seeing some major safety violations along with very poor supervision I joined the club and have never looked back.

My kids gave me one of these. No Ricocheting .All fragments go straight down.  https://www.highwildoutdoors.com/products/3-8-x-12-x-20-hostage-target-2x4-target-mount-kit?currency=USD&variant=43550896619773&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=83c19ed84dd9&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwk6SwBhDPARIsAJ59Gwcw6qR05QaDc8jbmFWfajJNiUYv-v8olcLXpwINnYhWvtTAp_9tclYaAgGwEALw_wcB  AR500 steel. Can take anything you shoot at it. 30-06, 7.62x39, 12ga slugs.Just tiny dents.  Other brands are good. Just look for the AR500 plates. I also have the Viking brand plates. https://www.midwayusa.com/s?searchTerm=steel%20targets If you shoot like my grand kids you will want to have repair parts for chain and frame ;D .

I been researching some and I see all kinds of articles on shooting steel. Seems to be pretty common place. Don't know where I been. Just never thought about it much I guess. I see what you showed  about the AR 500 steel. Wouldn't that still be dangerous shooting a BW at say 5 yards, or is that strictly longer distance shooting? Are the ones that spin, flip and such, safer to shoot .22 at short distances?

Do all that and you will be mostly alright.

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to keep researching. Will look at what academy and bps have next time I go. Maybe between y'all helping and researching more, I'll know a little more what I'm looking at.
