.22 short for defense?

The truth is the .22 short was orignially developed as a self defense weapon at close range.
Way back In 1871 Colt came out with a .22 short model followed by a Smith and Wesson's #1 revolver.
It was a great vest pocket protection weapon for gamblers and men of stature at the time.
Now over 150 years later, I'm proud to own a NAA .22 SHORT!

You may not need it but should have it.

Anvil

do you have one?

Anvil,

Yep,I have one.

I see that NAA now advertises the 22 short more often. Some time back, you seldom saw an ad for the 22 short.

I could be wrong on this, but I thought that NAA only made a small run of shorts every year and they were hard to locate.

Heck every self respecting NAA buyer-owner has one of these mini's if not two or three of different styles over the years . Great for a oversized watch pocket . Add a knife blade for a real close quarter weapon . ;)  ;)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

top dog

OV-1D,
I tend to agree with you on that.

I did some tests using the 22 short and the penetration of that round is pretty significant.

I would not want to stop one for sure!!!

Heres a picture with one of my shorties with the blade attached . Not a very threating looking piece but very affective up real close ,real close like you can smell the perks breath .

Very nice indeed OV! I always was intrigued with the older models. I thought the Butler single shots were so cool.

OV-1D,
Nice collection of gear there.

OV; if you are going to use a knife then you need something more akin to this to be effective.  8)

High zoot fish filet blade , fine looking steel that is Rogue but we wouldn't expect nothing else with you .Ha . ;)  ;)  ;)  ;) .

Rogue,
Very nice knife there!!!

Getting back to the 22 short for defense. In the case of the NAA short,it's main good point that, unlike a 44/357 or other large caliber piece,it will always be with you.

For a number of years, the 22 lr Naa mini was my "palm pistol" while on the job. Later on it was replaced by NAA 22 magnum versions, but I still was quite confident with that little 22 lr always with me.

yup, never fired it. i have a bunch of NAA minis that i do carry and shoot though. a working repo knuckle duster is something i would carry though.

top dog

Autofull,
I wonder if one of those knuckle dusters could be considered to be a Class 3 /tax stamp required item?

Hey there Autofull do you have a picture of one of those repo knuckledusters ?  ???
On another thread we talked about silencers on our 22's , that would be great if NAA would come up with a twist snap on can for their mini's that have certain siights like a blade of sorts to lock on . Not sure if there is a decibel limitation on a silencer as to where if it didn't make a gun totally silent it wouldn't need a fed stamp for buying .  A quieter mini would be pretty cool . I'm i clear on what I said ? .

Can a silencer have any real sound attenuating effect on a revolver?

Our resident silencer expert RogueTS1 can maybe fill us in on that question . Myself I've only seen any in the movies .Ha . I would bet cylinder spacing would have a lot to do with that issue . ;)  ;)

Maybe .............. a little bit, but the cylinder gap is going to let all the back pressured noise/gas out resulting in a different but still very loud gun shot noise. Now if one has a revolver with a sealed cylinder to forcing cone gap; a suppressor would/could work very well. Ex: The Nagant revolver.

My dad bought this Colt .22 Short at a gun show for $20 sometime in the 1970s

So did my mom.
When dad came home from the gun show, she grabbed it and said "That is MY gun". Lol

This is my mom's mom on her 21st birthday in 1898.
That is her Sharps 4-shooter.

Armybrat,
That looks nice!!  Does it still work?  What caliber??

                           Top Dog

Armybrat

.30 caliber, I believe.
The action still functions.

OV-1D

These Sharps are some of the best the West was won with ,  always in a vest pocket .
The only thing that will keep these antiques from firing is the rotating firing pin tit worn down to prevent contact with the cartridge properly .I've had a welder just touch with a rod to build up the pin on a one of mine .  :)  :)

I bought my Black Widow with Thingmeister grips for pocket carry, it's definitely increased the amount of times I carry when previously I would have gone without. I think it's reasonable to argue that .22lr vs .22 WMR doesn't have a whole lot of difference from a 2" barrel even with the modern short barreled loads.  I can see the same argument with .22 short, if that's what you have.

I really just want NAA to come out with a black widow version of the S&W Model 1 1/2 in .32 S&W, I'd leave burn marks in my wallet pulling out my credit card.

top dog

If I am not mistaken,in the mid to late 60s some company made a replica like that Sharps only in 22lr caliber.

I think the price was about $50. I almost purchased one but chose to buy a High Standard derringer in 22 lr (blue) for about $35. in '67.

In the 1960s to early 1970s, Erl Svendsen in Itasca Illinois made smaller copies of the Sharps derringers in .22 short and .22 LR. During this same time frame (pre-'68) Aldo Uberti built almost verbatim copies of the Sharps derringer in .22 short.

Your entirely correct Bill I posted down under "other guns" title below . Got a question for you there .
