Just ordered one of these:

https://www.daisy.com/product/daisy-adult-red-ryder/

Along with 6000 Crossman Copperhead copper-coated BBs, I spent $69.93 (including TN tax) at Amazon and it should arrive Monday.  With a cardboard box and some filling (paper or old clothes/towels) as a backstop, you can even reuse the BBs that pile up in the bottom of the box.  I may (if it will fit the adult version) be adding a picatinny rail to mount a decent scope on it.

I think this was a WONDERFUL idea.  When you give a Red Ryder to your child/grandchild/great-grandchild, you can be teaching from the same rifle... that actually fits you.

Bill,
I bit the bullet last winter and purchased an adult Red Ryder  (I also watched a Christmas Story............again) as well as the Daisy red dot sight for it.

Brought back many fine memories and the beauty of it is that I can plink in my back yard no sweat and at 10 shots per penny, real cheap practice.

Let us know how you like your new Red Ryder. I would say that it is a safe bet that virtually every member of this forum started out with a Red Ryder.

Don't poke your eye out!!!

Talking B-B guns years back (50) or so My Dad bought me a B-B gun it had a hooded front sight and interchangeable site blades for the front . I believe it was a Daisy but could be wrong , does anyone know of or know about the model number of this beautiful rifle ? Wish I still had it ,
Mom didn't like the idea so after awhile it disappeared ..

I got my Red Ryder when I was 8 Or 9 by selling Cloverine Brand Salve. It took a year or two sell enough.

I started off with a Daisy model 21 double-barrel BB gun.  By the time I got it, the stock was sheered-off near the receiver.  My next door neighbor made a stock for it. The stock was ugly as sin, nothing but rough wood, but
worked.

The interchangeable front sight blade sounds like one of the competition models.  Here's a current version:

I remember that.  Never sold it though.  Also recall the Rosebud Salve was popular.  Had not seen either in years and noticed a couple of weeks ago that the Amish store has the Rosebud by the cash register for sale.

That was my second BB gun/first pellet gun.

Uncle Lee,
I remember those salves ads as well as selling GRIT magazine subscriptions to get a Red Ryder.

I think those ads were in Boys Life back in the day.

Obviously,I no longer receive Boys Life, but I still do receive GRIT magazine.

Bill,
It looks like you started something here. I just went out this morning and ran my adult size Red Ryder through some plinking drills before getting ready to do Church/security   (not with the Red Ryder)

You also Billmeek thank you .The gun didn't have the elevated rear sight though but the rest looks identical  . Wish Mom wasn't so terrified or I'd have it still today ,Ha . It was a great shooter . Oh it didn't have the stock cutout or the stock mounted emblem coin but did have multiple front sights to change out . .

Thanks Wumbey I'll just have to check it out . I do remember it being an expensive solid stout looking rifle not the tin cheap looking pieces today but for a kid it could have been a dark brown lever action broomstick , ha ,ha . ;)  ;)

I sold Grit also.
But not so much. I think some of them used it in the outhouse. Why else if you buy a paper if you can't read????

Gosh, any kind of paper in the outhouse was luxury. Only paper we had was the old Progressive Farmer magazine. I think it only came quarterly. Uncle Lee, or anybody else remember how big it was. Not to many pages, but big in size. I lived with my grand parents, and I'm pretty sure they saved it for me. When the progressive farmer magazine was gone, it was only corn cobs.

OV-1D

OH man Camo I didn't need to read that . What did people do in ancient times inquiring minds need to know (NOT REALLY) . Water being a real commodity heck a place to go I hope wasn't too far off . I'm glad we turned into a more sanitized society for the most part , except India ,Pakistan places like that that anywhere will do with whatevers handy . Gotta think of a people that think a cow laying in the middle of the road has right of way .  :)  :) NOW THIS IS TREAD DRIFT , Ha . Sorry .

My grandparents kept a large supply of corncobs for that purpose up until the 1950s
Luckily by that time they had added a real indoor bathroom in their old house in a small Missouri town. I never used their outhouse for a #2 job.
But I do have this little oil painting hanging above the toilet in our guest bathroom as a reminder of those days...

Anyway, the last Red Ryder I bought ($20 on sale) was for my youngest grandson 6 or 7 years ago...

top dog

Armybrat,

That looks great!! Nice to see that your grandson is starting out right with his grandfather teaching him.

Like I had said before,I think most,if not all members of this forum started out with a Red Ryder.

When I take my recently purchased adult size Red Ryder,I don't feel embarrased in the least,in fact, rather proud.

I can't imagine the amount of tin cans that were shot with Red Ryders over the years.

How popular are the Red Ryders? According to Daisy,by 1960 they made/sold 40 million of them!!!!!!

Just went over the Daisy rifle site and it amazes me how cheap these B-B guns are . I know theres not much to them but this day and age one would think at least 20-30% higher prices . That similar one I had a great number of years ago is a little pricey but well worth the price for the quality of the piece . I remember it being so accurate it made me feel like a real marksman and sure enough it states it in the info for the gun being the most accurate in the world ,go figure my Dad bought the best of the best back then . Love ya Pop , Mom also . gone but not forgotten .. :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)

OV-1D,
Looks like your Mom & Dad started you out just right.

I would dare say that the Daisy Red Ryder has given the most enjoyment of any gun over the years.

Even on camping trips,I take the Red Ryder along. The advantage is no noise,no brass to police and if you or plinking at sticks in the water, the BBs are steel and non=toxic for the waterfowl.

Thats how many years back I decided to look for one but coming across these beautiful 22's instead these rifles always took precedence . Good thing the door is always open . Funny thats how I accumulated my collection of 22 mini's , I'd make a pair of grips or a simple holster ,nothing like Rick's beauty's, but with these makings of some sort I'd have to buy another gun to accept these new things . I always had an excuse to get another . ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)

OV-1D,
Yes,always good to think up another reason for getting another mini or other 22.

I just came back from a week long trip up to my cabin in Maine.

I had lots of plinking time with the Red Ryder at small sticks  in the lake.

That plus whittling on some sticks at the edge of the lake during the evening campfire made things just nice.

OV-1D,
I apologize for ruining your day,but hope to make it up by saying that you can come up to my campfire or fishing spot any time to sit and relax.

Where I was,a couple of nights we had sleet & rain.

A cow moose almost came up on to the cabin porch a couple of days in a row.

I hope you caught some trout.

ov1D has been in florida so long that if it was under 60 at your cabin or 75 in the water, his teeth would be chattering like an old time type writer
It's too bad that our friends cant be here with us today

HeuJoe knows me too well it seems . The heat goes on at 55% and off at (nailed this one Joe) 75% . In our dreams temperature is not an issue . Get me in the mountains and let me suffer theres always firewood in abundance but indoor plumbing is a must . :D  :D  :D  :D  :D . Those mountain streams will work real well with these weather changes of extreme heat . Anyhow its the call of the wild that draws me closer to the beauty of the higher outdoors , Florida is way too flat even though I live within a 1/10 of a mile from the highest point on the east coast of Florida ,Mount Washington (90-100 feet above sea level) to the locals . Gotta take oxygen with you up there .  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  ;)  .

OV-1D,
The cabin is heated with oil heat and yes, indoor plumbing. I checked today and it is a balmy 47 up there. Bathing suit wezather for sure!!!

Squirrel season here opened on the 1st so I will now do my weekly squirrel safaris with my old Savage/Stevens Model 24  22lr/410 O/U  and have the BW in 22 mag (in case of coyotes) on the belt.

I am still considering going to south FL end of October for iguana hunting with my Air Force Condor 22 pcp air rifle

and also some snake head fishing.

Any suggestions???

haha oxygen. not quite as high as Mt Washington in New Hampshire at 6,228 ft that also has its own weather, but for florida your Mount Washington must be like Mt Everest

I did some relax time yesterday plinking at tin cans with my Adult sized Red Ryder.

Was a nice relaxing session. No noise or brass to pick up    The only picking up I did was the tin cans to put in the trash.

Made me feel young again

Top dog,
Good to see you had a stress free day. Shooting a BB gun can bring back some old memories. I bought a new pellet rifle two years ago. Now you got me wanting to shoot it.

top dog

Camo,
I hope you can get to go out and shoot your new pellet rifle.

There are probably a lot of tin cans you can gather up and put a few pellet holes into.

Then go back home and settle down with the favorite beverage of choice.

And for gosh sake's don't poke you eye out!!!

Top dog,
We still getting rain off and on from the outer bands of hurricane Francine. Be at least tomorrow before I can shoot.

top dog

Camo,
Hope that the weather clears up so you can have some quality BB/pellet gun time.
