3 things when camping

My wife is not a fan of camping so most of my outings have been solo over the years, and that's okay. Now that I'm retired I enjoy heading out knowing I don't have to report back to work come Monday. There's nothing like siting by an open fire on a crisp cool night and gazing up at the Milky Way. I'm always amazed at all the night sounds of various nocturnal animals. There is a bird that sounds like a typewriter that chatters all through the night. Coyotes howl and the deer honk.
Anyway I have three things I must have when camping.
My NAA 22 mag Earl for defense but not to kill.
My Gerber Steadfast for chopping wood, cutting bait and gutting fish.
My Leatherman Rebar multitool for all other needs in camp.

Anvil,
I remember that (many) years ago when I suggested to my bride about camping.

I told her that it would be fun because as a boy,I used to live in the woods.

Her reply  :When you were a boy, everyone lived in the woods"

TD,
Shortly after we got married (1973), I took the wife camping for the first time to a lake about 30 miles from town. I set up camp, got the fire going and about to grill some steaks. I told her about laying back and watching the sky and seeing the Milky Way tonight when we noticed heavy rolling clouds far off in the south just before sundown,
We turned on the radio and sure enough a big storm was approaching. I told her most storms travel to the north east and we should be okay. A half hour later we quickly doused the fire, broke camp and loaded up the truck, then headed back to town, only to be chased at top speed by a F4 tornado!
She said that was it! No more camping adventures for her. ::)
I've been a solo camper for over 50 years now. :(
But still enjoy it.

F4 tornadoes have a way of dampening anyone's spirits for sure.

Sorry that event spoiled camping for her.

My wife enjoyed all of our camping adventures.

Her ashes are scattered by the water's edge of the lake right in front of our cabin in northern Maine hard on the Canadian border. so that way she is in sight of her native Canada.

So sorry for your loss TD! You created a good testament of your love and marriage with her ashes.

Camping is just fine as long as there is a "WAFFLE HOUSE" near by , like across the street . :)  :)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

Not waffles but flapjacks are always on the morning camping frypan menu!
Don't forget the eggs, sausage and american fries! Yummers! ;)

Anvil,
When the wife and I were camping,I did all the cooking chores.

Evening meals were cooked in a Dutch Oven. Roasts, steaks, fish always seem to taste better when cooked the Dutch Oven way.

I made camp/cowboy coffee using a 25 cup pot and it seemed to last maybe a day because folks would drop by to "chat" and oh,yes, have some coffee.

The dutch oven and the cast iron frypan are essentials at the campsite.
As is my old coffee pot!

Anvil,
Believe it or not,I make the coffee but am not a coffee drinker.

It is not that I don't like coffee,I just don't drink it.

Nice, seasoned cast iron cookware is the way to go. The more you use it,the better it gets.

Pretty much like seasoning a black powder rifle bore. Use pretty much the same stuff.

I've never washed any of my cast iron utensils. I just wipe them down and then they are well prepared for the next heat up without adding butter or grease.

Anvil,
Well seasoned  cookware beats teflon everyday and is not harmful to your health.

I am certain with use, teflon particles scrape off and are ingested.

I don't think that is very healthy.

Truth is my two daughters are already fighting over my decades of old seasoned cast iron cookware and I'm sitll using it myself at home!
I said I have no preferences as to who gets what. Fight over it after I'm gone. ::)
My oldest only wants the dutch oven.
She remembers camping days with it loaded up full of sausage, onions. carrots and potatoes, with eggs over easy on a naturally greased skillet right next to it.
Let's keep the health administrator out of this one!  >:( ;)

Anvil,
I remember one time, many years ago I told my wife that when I pass on,I want to take my "stuff" with me.

She looked at me and said "what size pyramid?"

I have a nice fire pit in the back yard with a contraption that holds my cast iron fry pan over the flames, and an unobstructed view of the sky in a very dark sky area. Many a night I sit out with a camp fire cook some burgers or hot dogs (no health minister here LOL ) a look at the stars and the Milkyway.

BigBird,
Looks like you have a pretty nice set up there!!!

I hope you are able to go out and enjoy it often.
