Ok, didn't actually expect a hug offer gray; and just like a guy you skipped the "I'm sorry" part (sheesh). Besides, my annual hug quoto has just been met---wife gets 3, mother gets 2.

This started out,(is it safe to load all 5

   chambers?)

My opinion is....It is for some and no to others.

On loading a blank for the first shot.

Handicaps are OK for bowling, not self defense..

The only time I would only carry 4 is if I needed to carry in my pocket without a holster, then I would have 4 rounds in the cylinder with the hammer on an empty chamber. The cylinder will NOT move then, and it takes much more hammer travel before it will. My pocket holster from NAA is pretty small though, and I don't see that case ever coming up.

I agree with coinchop, if you are going to load a blank, you could just carry a loud whistle and probably have the same effect. Or even carry a less leathal method such as pepper spray. If you are making the decision to pull a gun I think you should mean business. If you feel sfer carrying loaded on an empty chamber nothing wrong with that. I watched "Shooting USA" on the outdoor channel and the cowboys only loaded 5 rounds. Those were the most macho guys there were and they saw the benefit and safety of only carrying on an empty chamber. I have practiced and the safety slots are not the easiest to find and I can understand the concern of not putting it in the slot or having it come out of the slot accidentally. Don't let machismo get in the way of safety. In a SD situation you prob aren't going to shoot 4 or 5 shots anyway.

Using a blank 1st shot is by far the stupidest idea I've ever heard. If the bad guy is a bad guy, you won't get a second live shot, but instead will be in a pool of blood, your own.FWIW my GS owner carries a 22lr NAA, unholstered in the watch pocket of his 505's....Pearl grips too...

flyinbiker2001

my 22lr being so short I load mine with a round of CCI birdshot to distract the BG long enough to gain a proper aim, this opens a old can of worms I know but with only 5 shots and the LRs lack of power the idea of loading a blank dont work for me why not just fire a live round in the air

From a mathematical stand point, Grandpa has shown it is more feasible to use the blank for the first shot. He is content with it, and being of legal age, it is his right to do so. I am confident almost everyone on this board will agree to that. I, like so many who have posted in this thread, do not feel it is in my best interest to do so. I will carry 5 live rounds, and will not try to convince Grandpa to carry the same. I doubt I can anyway, no more so than he could convince me to carry a blank.

For over 20 years I carried a round of birdshot to be fired first. I now carry 5 HPs. I am not going to try and convince Flyinbiker2001 to change his ammo preference. It is his neck, and his choice.

We as a group are having a "discussion" among ourselves that is the same - only different - as some of the non-NAA believers have had with us. They have attempted to get us to quit carrying our Minis and carry a bigger more effective weapon, yet we have resisted. We know what is best for us, and we even know what is best for them, they just won't listen to good, solid reasoning. If they were half as smart as we are, they would all go out and buy a Mini to carry as a BUG, or a primary when they don't want to carry their big, heavy primary weapon.

Bottom line, can't we be a little more tolerant of folks who disagree with us, at least on our own board? (Okay, Sandy's board he lets us use.)

   (Thanks, Dude!)

I have to admit that I am puzzled by the ratshot option. I guess (not having tested or read about tests) that for the attacker to even be aware that he had been hit, the shot would have to be to the face (assuming the attacker was fully clothed). Unless he was wearing eyeglasses, he would probably be blinded, which could make for a really nasty lawsuit. Which is still a lot better than being dead, I admit.

Tis better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6

dog_soldier

I am trying to put together in my mind the exact process that would occur in the event of using a load of ratshot or worse a blank as the first round.

What I conceive is the shooter letting fly with the underpowered round then standing there waiting to see what happens next.

I really can't see that being a good plan.

As for myself I load solids and fully intend to put two or three rounds on the bridge of the perps nose.

Im a former US Marine I have seen combat up close and personal the odds of hitting anything on your first shot are slim in a panic ,in the real world it dont happen-Seal.scout sniper, well trained cop maybe 50/50 ,and hearing a bang seeing a flash and feeling something hit you Will make you take notice,is it a flawless plan no
