Just got my 1st NAA, got the combo kit. This is a very cool little banger. Picked up a box of Hornady 22 mag with a soft tip. Any advice in ammo for self defense?

Welcome to the forum!

I like the Gold Dot bullets. Others on here will tell you Magnapoints are best. I personally think it will be hard to go wrong with most any .22 mag ammo.

I tote the cci maximag stuff.  At $11 a box it is not too pricey and they are pretty fast.  Fortunately there are at least several quality top notch choices out there.

Go to this website and look at the results.

I have carried this load for years, it has the best fps and reliability.  The only thing I have changed is from softpoint to solid bullet.  With a small load like this, expansion isn't very likely but penetration, especially impacting bone is important.

I personally go for muzzle energy over speed. Sure those 30gr bullets are faster, but the 40gr tend to have more energy.

I would pick a 40gr FMJ bullet, and go with that ;)

Out of my short barreled mini mag, the Winchester ammo packs the most ENERGY, so that is a good choice.  In fact the winchester show to have more energy out of all barrel lengths. Just the plain SuperX 40 grain

louiethelump

Either Winchester solids or Winchester HP, as the HP will act as a solid in all likelyhood for me, out of my Black Widows.

I prefer the heavier bullet for penetration.

Just a brief comment in support of "energy" vs. speed.  In reality, speed and energy are very closely related, energy being proportional to the square of the velocity, all other things being equal.  What we are really preferring is momentum over energy.  Kind of like the old Taylor KO values.

In the case of a 40 gr. at 900fps vs. a 30 gr. at 1000 fps, the 40 grainer has a 7% energy advantage (by virtue of it's 25% greater weight) but a 23% momentum advantage, because that 1000fps is only multiplied once to get momentum. It's momentum (achieved by that heavier bullet) that gives us penetration if the bullet holds together.

Thanks all! I got the 22mag/lr with shorty barrel for $203.00 out the door. THESE ARE COOL! Easier to carry than the LCP even, but 22 mag is LOUD!! ouch

Correction: The 40 gr. bullet is 33% heavier than the 30 gr.  4th grade mental math error!

By the way, what's the deal with CCI ammo?  How could it be not recommended??

louiethelump

PMC is not to be used.................  not CCI.

   CCI is fine

i just got the .22 magnum with the xtra .22 LR cylinder. my wife bought the gun for me for christmas. when she purchsed the gun she bought a box of .22 magnum bullets for it. the ammo is Fiocchi ammo .22 WIN. MAG but on the box it says specifically This ammo is not for use in North American Arms Firearms. So does anyone know if i should not use this ammo and why they would have that on their box? Thankx.

Federal Premium 30 grain Speer TNT HP for me. Here's a close up pic of the business end.

The torx bit is size T-9 and is loose in the hollow point. Should give those of you who don't have a reference bullet as to the cavernous hollowed out end. Unlike any other HP I've seen in a 22WMR.

I use CCI and Fiocchi

I've looked all over my Fiocchi box and do not see the NAA Mini disclamer and they have all fired without an issue so far. I also found that they penetrated a little better than my CCI's. So thats what I use as my defensive load.

Those federal TNT's look like a good round. I'll have to keep an eye out for them.

I emaild fiocchi and they told me to try and traid them to someone with a 22 mag other then a mini. i have taken them to the range and they worked fine for me. ksblazer you may have some of the older stock as the note about not to uwe with mini's is a sticker. bottem line i think if yo do come up with some probleme dont go to giocchi with it as they have said do not use this ammo in mini. i uwed it at my own risk and will shot up what i have but for target not self deff....

i do love the ammo above sith the torx sticking out

Hi Quality,

I've the same little gun. Great fun, and yes, they are loud. The great thing about a new gun is that it give you the perfect excuse to experiment. You might want to check out my playing with .22's here:

Try different rounds in differnet mediums (milk jugs, wet newspaper, drywall...) and see what they really do.

Heck, when I'm hunting squirrl, I put .22 shorts in the NAA to dispatch a tree rat that was hit, but not killed right away. As to the Fioochi problem, that's easy, by another .22 mag gun.

Lop,

Thanks for the link ,it was interesting.

For me, I alternate between FMJ and CCI TNT`s in my mini-mag

My way of thinking is if the hollow points expand ,great ,if not they act as a FMJ and the penetration is better.

Disclaimer ,my way of thinking has been questioned in the past

   Good day,Gents

Hey, I ment to ask Zippo, doesn't that torx bit mess up your barrel? ;-)

snubsforme

My testing was shooting thru two 2X4's.  Only the CCI, Winchester Super X and Winchester Premier bullets would penetrate both.  Interestingly, the Premier's made a slightly larger diameter hole than the other two.  Based on that I would recommend the Premier cartridge if cost is no object.  After that the Super X is my choice; costs half as much so you can afford more practice.

fyi - armscor .22 mag (imported from philippines) has warning on box - "not for use in n.a.a revolvers"
