Pics of Pug vs. Black Widow

New to the forum and new to the NAA mini's.

I'm looking for an NAA .22WMR as an 'all the time' carry gun. I'm not interested in a plinker, other than I want to be able to practice with it on a regular basis. Away from the house, it will be the BUG. Around the house it will be in my pocket all the time.

I've searched the forums for hours trying to find a good picture of the Pug next to the Black Widow, and have just not been able to find one. My concern is that the Black Widow is just too big for what I'm trying to accomplish - namely, being able to pocket the gun with shorts, dress slacks, or any other clothing.

Would some of you folks with both post some pictures so I can get a better sense of the size difference?

Thanks, and much appreciated!!

Welcome to the forum!!  I can't give you a side by side pic of the BW and PUG, but I'm sure someone here will in time.  However, you can request a free catalog from NAA and they show their revolvers at actual size (though a couple are shown not at actual size and are noted as such) for a good size comparison.  Best to you.

Dinadan

swmp9jrm- Here is a photo of the Black Widow next to a Pug. The BW's barrel is 1" longer than the Pug's, other than that they are the same size. The grips on either can be changed to any of NAA's Magnum Mini grips.

I'm also new to the forum and those pictures are a great help in deciding which gun to buy.  I am leaning toward the Pug.  The Black Widow is nice too but may be a bit too long for easy concealment in a pocket.  Maybe I'll have to buy both.

Guys, thanks for the responses! The pics are exactly what I was looking for. As I suspected, the Black Widow looks to be a bit longer than what I'm looking for - the Pug, on the other hand, looks like it will fill the bill.  I think all this really means is that I have to buy the Pug now, and then add the Black Widow later!

swmp9jrm and Rohn - welcome to the forum. I prefer the Pug for carry, but both the Pug and Black Widow are very fine revolvers. No matter which you get, I suggest trying to find a conversion model with both magnum and long rifle cylinders.

Dinadan: That's what I'm on the hunt for.  Does your Pug have the white dot sight or the tritium sight? And do you prefer one over the other? I've got an XS tritium on my Ruger LCR, and I'm not all that happy with it - leaning toward the white dot on the Pug.

My Pug has the tritium sight. I think it is cool and I think it is probably useless in a self defense situation. I just do not see myself aiming that precisely if I am being mugged in a dark driveway - I would probably be shooting from the hip. So I am neutral on the sights - the tritium sight is as good as the white dot for target shooting, so there is no reason not to get it other than the small extra cost.

Some others here disagree with me about the utility of the tritium sight: what I am saying is just my opinion.

I have both, but myself I prefer the Black Widow. An inch longer barrel does not make much difference in your pocket, and it is more accurate than the pug. But at close range that wouldn't make that much difference. :)

I've got the Black Widow and I love it, however I don't see me carrying it in my pants pocket. I'll just carry my mini in the summer.  ;D

I have both models and I think the Pug will work perfectly for swmp9jrm.  Extremely easy to carry and excellent for self defense.  The Black Widow isn't huge but it's noticeably larger in the pocket, and really doesn't give you much more in the self defense department.  I can shoot the BW more accurately at longer distances, and would choose the BW for a lightweight plinking or camping gun over the Pug.  But for self defense at any reasonable distance, the Pug will get the job done nicely.  It's a lot of firepower in a small package.

Thanks, folks, for all the replies. Eventually, I'm going to end up with more than one, as I really like both the BW and the SW. But for my first, as bleak_window says, the Pug looks to be exactly what I want. It's for last resort, inside 7 yards when I'm carrying something else (everywhere except at home) and as a 'better-than-a-knife' option when I'm around the house and can reasonably expect things to be 'normal'. I like the size, weight, and look of the Pug - now I've just got to find one!

That's the best choice for your specific usage.  The little Pug is a very comforting companion yet easy to add to your carry routine and perfect to have in a pocket while bumming around the house and yard.  For self defense, I feel the Pug is a significant upgrade over the standard Mini because of the heavier barrel, better sights, more secure cylinder pin latch, and the 1-piece rubber grips.

I carry my Black Widow year round AIWB (appendix inside the waistband).  I made a custom leather holster for it that just slips into my pants between me and the waistband.  I hardly even know it's there.  I live in a very warm climate and it doesn't matter...I love it.  I carry with shorts of varying materials from lightweight to denim and it's unnoticeable. The Black Widow conversion model is the one for me.  I know where there is another one in town at the moment.  I'm thinking of getting the second one for a weak side New York reload.

aspects not really discussed are width and weight.
Unloaded weight for NAA.
Pug 6.4 oz.
BW. 8.8 oz.

Not a big factor for theses two, but something to think about if you consider other CCW firearms.

A copper core quarter weighs 0.20 oz.  Thus, a $10 roll of 40 quarters is about 8 oz.

Put 32 quarters in a plastic bag, stick it in your pocket and walk around to feel the weight of an unloaded Pug.  Or just use a full roll to simulate weight of Pug, ammo, and holster.  An easy way to simulate carrying a pistol in your pocket"  :)

That's 100% one of the most hardcore posts I've seen here lately.

Thoughts, anyone?

Not sure what you mean by hardcore, I was giving people a way to simulate the weight of a carry weapon before purchase.  For example, stuff 3 rolls of quarters in your pocket to simulate the weight of a 380 Guardian.  Walk around all day.  Try the same with one roll, which is similar in weight to a Pug.  Load up a cellphone belt case if you want the weight on a belt.

To know coin weights off the top of your head is impressive. To use them for a known weight simulator is a sign of intelligence. :)

RogueTS1

My holstered Pug feels a bit lighter to me in my pocket than a roll of quarters; though it may just be the difference in volume of the two that makes it feel so.

I was thinking what is easily available of a known weight.  Washers can be inconsistent in weight. Quarters!  I had to google the weight, which is very close to 5 to an ounce.  Even better.

I agree that the volume or weight in you pocket vs clipped on a belt is a different feel.  This was just an idea to ballpark weight and feel.   The weight difference in firearms is greater in the 380 and 9mm pistols.

"hey, my eyes are up here.". Stop looking at my gun(s).

Heh, funny!

A guardian should lay barrel horizontally (more or less) in a pocket like that. A thick-material shirt with flap pockets is best. Figure out how to wrap something around the gun to break up the outline. A couple of currency notes work well for this.

The NAA Pug or Guardian is more of a shirt pocket gun. The Black Widow does quite well when "nested" with other items in a pants pocket... assuming you don't go for the many, many other options.

I like the NAA BW in the factory velcro ankle holster with a concealment knife and cop holdout flashlight clipped to it.

That's just me.

OV-1D

Just stick your carry permit card in front to break up the outline . :) :)

Would a Pug fit in an empty cigarette box? Seems like the perfect place, as long as your not around people that know you don't smoke(if you don't) or pull another pack out to get a cig(if you do). A lot of people keep their smokes in those front t-shirt pockets, anyways, so it seem like a good option.

boots

You will be happy with either one.  At this time I carry a BW and am very pleased.  My next one will be a pug or a S/W.  I like the sights on the plug but like the swing cylinder of the S/W.  If I had the money I would get both.

Until you get asked why you smoke 20 times daily or asked to bum a smoke.  If I could carry, I would use an eyeglass case or cell phone case.

TeeJay37

Kevin, it was just a thought. I don't get the first part, though. You can tell I'm a smoker, right? I called it a box, instead of a pack.

Well, I did find a Pug a few weeks ago - really like it! So much that I've now bought a Black Widow combo. Is there a cure for this disease?

Not only is the Black Widow more accurate but it is also quite a bit more powerful. I tried to find the numbers but I cannot locate those tables for some reason.

The Pug is not listed, but there are ballistics for th 1-1/8" magnum and Black Widow.
