OV,
Gotta disagree with Boone. Stainless retains the look of the gun.  Clean and esthetically better.  That is my opinion only and should you go brass, it is highly unlikely that the gods of good taste will punish you too severely or in a too hideous fashion.

Tradition?  But then what do I know?  I still look at flipper hubcaps.

flipper hubcaps.

I'm so behind the times I don't even know what those are. Really.
"The world is made for people who aren't cursed with self awareness."

boone123

Flipper hubcaps, what brought those up?
They were a full disk hubcap with a protrusion sticking out of the center of the cap with 3 or 4 flippers on it that flashed in the sun while going down the road. When you met a car with them on at night you could see them flashing in your headlights. I saw some on an older car a while back. Fist time in years. They came before chrome, mag, and  white spoke wheels.
I still have some just in case that era  goes by again. Don't know if it will help my image much, but  the gun I have shot the most in the last year or two, was made in 1949.  S&W  K-22.     And NO, I didn't buy it new...

That is very nice, I am going to try to try matching the white spacer but my mammoth scale isn't helping!

cfsharry

Awesome grips.
I would like to order a set but they must be done with stainless escutcheons and screw.

Ruffed out and shaped, does have the graining look of antler.  Spacer is an issue if I want it out of Mammoth my scale fell short of the material to do it?  Got more Mammoth, but don't know it I want to use it for spacer.  Got other antler?  It's not buffed yet, the white should buff to gloss. Lot of finish work left to do but I know at this point it will work.  You never know about the graining until you get to this point.

OV1D, You are a man after my own heart and you do great work on the grips.  I recognize your twist-2.  I wish I still had mine.  I used to carry one as a border officer in the 70s in a holster I had custom put on my RedWing boots.  I also admire your 4-barrel.  I saw a man at a gun show had one all engraved. He was not going to sell it as it was his engraving job.  Beautiful gun. If I ever learn how to take and post pictures I will show my custom grips.

45Flint, really nice looking start with the mammoth.

OV-1D

Thanks guys but dang they were a pain to match up just right and have the cuts line up doing it by hand , give and take , shave ,give and take ,turn , shift , shave back and forth like that .

45Flint your on your way , how is the mammoth to cut ? That's how I'm going to my next with the mammoth , using a spacer filler piece . I have some scrap ivory left for that being the mammoth scales don't come quite thick enough to rout out like those boots . By the way what are, do, you use to glue this stuff together ? I found that two part epoxy does not stick to ivory ,can put it off , why I haven't a clue . Can't wait to start these new sets have even more beautiful scales of mammoth coming any day along with some sambar stag sets . This can get contagious , BUYING THAT IS THESE OUTRAGEOUS MAMMOTH SCALES . Just a reminder I going to buy more ivory later on but 1/2 inch thick min. by whatever is wanted or needed . Gives a little play with what you might want to do and not so restricted as I feel I was being only 3/8 th thick . I wanted to flare the bottoms , and be fuller width wise , like on the Freedom Arms boot grips but was unable to due to not enough material left . Live and learn . Can't wait to see your finished set 45Flint . Don't forget to make your own escutcheons it's important, hahaha , crazy but important .  ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

45Flint I forgot to add you can get a piece of elephant ivory big enough for your fillers depending on the colour of the mammoth marrow , pretty cheap I would say for something that size . Boone Trading out of Wash. State .  It's a shame the mammoth pieces that thick are harder to find for the boot cut out and when you do find some theres too much waste to justify .  :)

It is fun and lots of hand fitting back and forth.  After a few however you kind of get a system.  I use 2 ton epoxy, comes in a tube mix them together.   It hardens in a hour and I use that hour to let it slightly set up and move things if I need to.  Fit and refit over that hour to prevent errors.  Surprised that the Elephant Ivory does not stick?   The Mammoth Ivory is stablized with a epoxy, so may be why it works.   I made my spacer out of a very solid piece of Moose antler.   See below.  I don't make  escutcheons, probably use magnets, I think I have one NAA scew set left, if I can find it!

I did see the spacer material on the Boone Trading Co website.  I think the moose can be tea dyed to match.  Ivory may tuff to dye, think it would be harder more dense.   You totally nailed the ivory grip, very cool.

OV-1D

Thanks 45 I like how you channel out that filler piece I'll have to steal that if you don't mind . That's just how I'll do mine great idea for stabilising the piece and gives you more area to fit properly without changing the two side scales once one has them fitting right , heck you can make the whole grip set escutcheons and all and leave that to last fitting . Thanks . :) :)

OV-1D,   One other thought for you.  I forgot to do this, this time.  But I think I am ok.   Make sure your scales are perfectly flat by putting them on a kitchen table etc.  if not lay a sheet of sandpaper down and sand them flat.   I have had scales that were slightly off and I didn't find out till I glued the inner guide.   Looks like these mammoth are ok!

OV-1D

Thanks that's always good to have them flat , I have a piece of marble top and a piece of 1/2 micarta block also for that one purpose especially for sanding and levelling . Now keeping that filler piece square with the two sides is the trick . We both need a CNC for sure but then it would take all the craziness out of it , for such small stuff it uses up a big part of our brains , haha .  :) :) :)

Thanks Harry I'll make you some for ...........lets say................$ 1000.00 and dibbs on your first born and I'll use NAA escutcheons for your special order .  :) ;)

45Flint if you remember a few posts ago we were talking about those blue coloured mammoth scales . Turns out those different colours are natural , not dyed , from being buried in the different types of river , lake muds they are found in , seems its certain kinds of mineral decomposition along with the ivory , cool , it amazes me how well the marrow on most of them is so intact ,like it died a few years ago instead of 40,000 plus . Looking for some reds and greens tints also besides the blue . These mammoth scales are natural works of art in themselves , little geological gems .

Final glue of the night.  Going pretty fast really, shouldn't have sat and looked at it for two months!

Maybe I can post.

gunfitrip

Wow, I actually did it.  I may not ever remember how I did it though.  The top BW grips are Spresser Mastadon Ivory, the middle are pearl that came on the gun originally as one of the first 77 or so of the BP Super Companions, the last are Elk stag I made for the LR BP.

OV-1D

Those are beautiful and congratulations on posting them . Thanks . :)

Thanks,  Yea I just love working on these things.  It's pretty apparent from looking on this and the holster thread that many of the NAA lovers also love to work on their own gear. Pretty talented crew.

45flint

Ruff fitting done, now tedious fitting around gun, at least 1/16 inch overhang left to form fit, a lot of material to remove.   I will screw this one thinking brass would look best with tan color grips?

nastruck

WOW!!!! AWESOME work guys! All of you, beautiful grips....

I think that's just what we all do here is inspire each other in all areas of our endeavours which is awesome in itself . Kudos to us all . :)

The Mammoth ivory is just special, because it can be such a variety, and to think you are holding a piece of that huge beast and a piece of history.

OV-1D

45Flint just had a brainstorm only an opinion but that forward bottom overhang on that filler piece would look great for an entire grip hold incorporated for the finger , something new look . It could always be removed if it didn't work out .  :)

Think its gone as of last night!  Don't think it hits my fingers right?  I was thinking of a finger grove but it would screw up graining?  Other thoughts of tea dying the whole grip for a more antique look.  Also possibly dying the graining so it stands out more.  Done on a lot of sambar.
