Ok, so my good buddy just acquired 10,000 rounds of .40SW and today he came over and said here, and gave me 5,000 rounds for free!!

So, not owning a single .40 cal firearm, what do you suggest I get?

I suggest you 'play it forward' and give five others 1,000 rounds each. It'll make you feel warm and fuzzy all over.

I was actually looking at buying a 40S&W Taurus revolver, but decided not to because I didn't want to stock another caliber. If I had 5000 free rounds, I'd buy the revolver.

That's just me.

Pick up a police trade in glock or m&p if you go auto.  I have a couple police trade-ins, all function great, and pre-carry wear is not a big deal for me on a gun I am going to toss in a bag.  You end up saving a good amouth of money.

Cheap and functional or "nice?" Does it have to be a pistol?

Hipoint makes a perfectly servicable .40 pistol and carbine. Were I to not have a .40 and receive 5k free rounds, I'd get the carbine. People deer hunt with those and they have rails everywhere. An aftermarket stock is available that makes it look a lot like the Beretta Storm carbine. The Kel-tec carbines are also a lot of fun, but you can't put a scope on there like a Hipoint.

Nice pistol? Springfield XD, Glock, Sig, Tanfoglio (Italian made, not the "others) and so on.

There's a boat of options.

Don't forget the Beretta 96. Those are extremely nice and also available in stainless.

Pic is a glassed hipoint with the aftermarket stock.
