The most important thing is this story is the part of its headline which reads:  "... Met With Bipartisan Dissent"... I read the article and couldn't find:  is there some suspicion that multiple semi-auto rifle sales are somehow providing arms to the drug traffickers?  So why is the new law needed?

Doug - Actually yes that is a serious problem.  Not so much in Kali as our laws are already so obnoxious that it is hard to buy a revolver let alone an assault rifle.  However, I am told from the people I know in AZ that they have some (not tons) of problems with guns in general (not just assault rifles) going over the border and later being recovered via the encounters with drug traffickers.

That said I don't think that the new laws they are proposing right now are going to do any real good.  And I think that the "met with Bipartisan dissent" thing is very good...with any luck it won't get passed.

I would think with all the knock-off AKs being manufactured in former Soviet bloc countries that they would be the main source of weaponry for "El Narco Hefes."

But... hey... maybe they want to "Buy American!"

LOL Yea you would think wouldn't ya?  I don't think its as big a problem as some would like us to believe.....  Like I said I don't think any law they passed to make it harder for law abiding people to purchase guns is going to do any good.  But I think some see it as a good opportunity to grab at the guns.

It makes sense. The drug cartels have huge amounts of money to buy full auto weapons on the black market, but, instead they sneak across our border, buy semi auto weapons, 5 or 10 at a time, then sneak back across the border and assault innocent people.

If the Politicians need something to worry about, why not worry about keeping OUR borders secure, then worry about the internal problems of another nation?

If they are in fact targeting weapons of interest to the drug cartels, why not describe the targeted group more closely. As the proposal reads now, "...any semi-automatic rifle greater than .22 caliber with a detachable magazine." Browning BAR 7mm Mag? Remington 742 .243? All of these are rifles of choice for drug cartels and gangs. Yeah, right.

Next question: How long before His Highness "realizes" the suspected gun runners find out they are being tracked, and start moving to other states to buy their semi-auto weapons, and other states have to start reporting multiple sales of rifles?

What a bunch of crap.  That balony about hunting rifles and shotguns coming from the US to supply the cartels is nothing but a bunch of hooey to cast more aspersions at the 2nd ammendment. Everyone knows the cartels are useing fully auto military weapons, Ak's in particular and grenades etc.  They can be had through international arms dealers to anyone with the bucks especially from comblock countries.  The cartels don't waste their time having them smuggled over the US border when they can get tons flown directly into the mexican airports.  Just another ploy to tighten up on law abiding citizens legally owned guns here.  Don't believe that crap and don't trust the liberal politicians.   Stainless

I'll sure be glad when Oprah, her secretary,

and her lawyer are no longer in the White House.

many of the cartels weapons are from mexican military and police deserters, thats not including the personel that are in the cartels (the same deserters) it was also my understanding that only a mediocre percentage of the traceable guns ceased are legally purchased in the US.. did I mention TRACEABLE as in more then half are not traceable and many dont even have manufacturing marks let alone a serial number ever stamped on them...

I can't work out whether they (our leaders) are really this stupid or  whether they think we (the people) are really so stupid that we'll believe them.
