We have had several discussions on firing the LR in a Mag chamber. Yes it can be done, and done so safely. My son was doing some research and ran across this site:
http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm
They sell chamber adapters in a variety of calibers, in either blued steel ($20) or SS ($28). A sample is shown below. The good news is, the 22 LR to 22 mag adapters come 3 to a pack.

22 Long Rifle in:
22 Jet
22 Hornet (TC)
218 Bee
219 Zipper
221 Fireball
222 Remington*
222 Rem Mag.*
223 Remington*
22-250*
22 WMR (Pkg. of 3)

22 Mag (WMR) in:
22 Hornet (TC)
218 Bee (TC)
219 Zipper (TC)
221 Fireball (TC)
222 Remington*
222 Rem Mag.*
223 Remington*
22-250*

22 Hornet in:
223 Remington (TC)
(Available in Stainless ONLY)
22-250

22 Shot (Offset) in:
.410 gauge
45 Long Colt

30 Carbine in:
308 Winchester
30-06 Springfield
30 Mauser in:
308 Winchester
30-06 Springfield
30 Luger in:
308 Winchester
30-06 Springfield

32 ACP in:
30-30 WCF
308 Winchester
30-06 Springfield

Do yourself a favor and tour their web site. You never know when you may want, or need, to fire a rimfire in a .410, or  45 LC in a 12 ga!

Gray,
Their website states the adapters are made for rifles. Do you see any reason they might be problematic in a revolver?

MR_22

Hey that's pretty cool. I'm going to have to get some. I'd love to shoot .22LR in my Taurus 981 Hunter with 12-inch barrel.

I'm pretty sure they'd work fine in a revolver. I don't see any reason why they wouldn't.

grayelky

Bear in mind I am not an engineer, nor a machinist. The adapters may be designed for a rifle, but if the outside dimensions meet industry specs, I cannot see why they would not work in a revolver. The revolver's chambers are held to the same industry standards. You may encounter ejection issues. If we are dealing with a mini revolver, the cylinder pin should punch out the empty like always. You may have to re-seat the adapter.

My apologies to all for failing to read the web site thoroughly.

As mentioned, the "cartridge" is the cartridge. What its chambered in makes little difference from a firing perspective.

The adapters will work in most any firearm, in a wheelgun, they will get ejected as opposed to the fired case. In a mini, the adapter might stick to the cylinder walls enough that the empty case might pop out.

For the mini's, the adapter price (5 adapters = $40 in cs or $56 in ss) is about the same as a replacement cylinder. For those that cant easily ship the gun back to NAA, its worthwhile, if you can, its better to send it back and jut get the extra cylinder....

I have fired 22lr, 22long & 22short in a 22mag cylinder and while it works, its not the most accurate. I guess the slight difference in bullet diameter allows the bullet to start in the forcing cone a tad off kilter which kills accuracy. I have tried shooting CCI Colbri in my 22mag MM and at 7 yards its not minute of beer bottle. :( One day it and its siblings are going off to get the cylinders theyre missing.

BTW, if you shoot 22 s, l or lr in a Mag, MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN THE CYLINDER AFTERWARD! Not doing so could lead to serious problems down the road with pressures when firing magnums.

Yeah, sorta figured that out for myself that the chamber dimensions of a rifle and a revolver chambered for the same cartridge would be about the same. My concern is with the length of the sleeve itself. Not sure why the maker would explicitly state 'for rifles' if there is no reason to do so.

That is, if you only plan to use them in a mini-revolver. I have plenty of .22 Magnum firearms in which I could use these, including a Taurus .22 Magnum 12-inch revolver, and even a .22 Magnum Rossi single-shot rifle. I would assume they can be inserted and removed as easily as a .22 Magnum round, right? So, if I bought six of them, I could use them in about every firearm that shoots just .22 Magnum.

Kind of makes me wish I still had my .22-Magnum Rangers! Finally, .22LR in a Ranger! :)

TwoGunJayne

I have a .22 lr chamber adapter for my WW2 German flare pistol. Did you know those crazies made grenade rounds for those launchers?

Man, I'd have a heart attack if I found a "mismarked box of flares."  ;D

A trick with those chamber adapters is to make a reference mark on your chamber lip and the adapter head and align them the same way every time. I hear that helps a lot to shrink groups... as much as they're shrinkable for 2" of chamber...

Just received an email back from MCA and they advised that use in revolvers is OK. Go gettum!

That's certainly good to know.  ;D

No, MCA was a founding member of the Beastie Boys, a pioneer white rap trio. He died not too long ago. :(

They were actually very subtle about being pro-2nd without being "crime like" or "thuggish." Their lyrics might illustrate friends possibly going to a shooting range and talking about multiple sports. There were usually too many cultural references to figure out in their style. Much of it is "too old school" for the kids these days to get, and none of it was "all this crime stuff," such that came later.

All in all, a rather wholesome group. MCA will be missed. RIP.

I guess that makes him a Macho Man.  ;)

I have a 22 hornet rifle single shot, german made. All the 22 hornet ones list TC,does anyone know if that will work in my rifle? thanks

I

Don't see why it wouldn't...

If your conversion round fits the sleeve and the sleeve fits into a standard chamber, the only other question is will the action cause a problem somehow.

I've heard "some fitment required" on these things, particularly the really long "caliber conversion" ones.

For a few dollars more, not the movie, why not buy a .22lr cylinder rather than this work-around.

I read their solution for a 308 adapter for 7.62x39.  The bullet is 0.312 diameter vs .308.  Mind you a lot of AK ammo is steel cased and hard bullets.  Will a 308 rifle cycle AK ammo?  Even a crappy mag will turn a semi auto into a single shot.  I'd just buy a SKS.

They call both 7.62, but the dimensions differ.

Fret not, sir. Failure stories are more important than "it worked" stories.

It's like the logical fallacy of russian roulette. To the one "playing," the cylinders are always empty. Dead men post no failure stories. Translation: the ultimate failures can't tell you about how they were wrong this whole time.

Love your posts, sir. Please keep on keeping on. I mean no disrespect in any way, shape, form, or fashion (real or imagined.) Sorry if I get flustered sometimes.

What's more important is the people who know better versus the guy who said "it worked" and then vanished from the 'net. What happened to that guy?!?!

I was going to buy these inserts but when I inquired they said they were made of brass.  I thought that they would not last all that long if I continued to use them.  To me it made more sense to but the 22 Winchester Rim Fire (WRF) which fits a 22 mag but is reduced power.

Cocked and pulled the trigger twice and no boom.  I thought I had a bad batch of ammo, but discovered I had put LR ammo in my Mag cylinder.  I was a little ashamed as such a newbie error.  I also noticed the rounds had a pretty deep dimple but still had not fired.  Maybe this is common knowledge, but I was a little surprised.

I had the same experience once when I was target shooting. I inadvertently loaded a Mag cylinder with LR rounds. After the second FTF I was thinking that the ammo was really bad, after the third FTF I figured out my mistake.

TwoGunJayne

I've done it too. I forget what pistol, but it actually fired and split the brass down the side. Very tough to extract. Stupid me kept going and I was convinced I had a box of defective ammo!

Then I realized my mistake. I felt quite stupid that day, I assure you.

I figured I couldn't have been the only one.  Thanks for the reassurance guys.  But I will probably not be inviting you to my house to shoot....

You'd rather shoot with inexperienced people that don't have mistake and failure stories? :)

All right, well how about shooting 9mm from your 12-gauge shotgun? WHY would you do that??? BUT HOW COOL!!! :)

Or how about 12-gauge to .22LR with 8 inches of Rifling?

Actually, I had one of my H&R revolvers out shooting one day and I was thinking, wow, this revolver is quite accurate! I think it had a 7.5-inch barrel. Or it might have been 6. (I have since sold it.) I only shot 2 cylinders through it when I realized it was a .22 Magnum and I was loading it with .22LR. I felt pretty stupid, but it didn't seem to care. I didn't keep doing it, though.

Kind of sad that you lose track of what firearms you brought with you and what caliber they are. I have lots of H&R revolvers, tho, and I guess I got them mixed up. It didn't split the cases or anything and they weren't hard removing the shells.
