   "Giving one's word".""

   To me also.

Sometimes, I think the word 'honor' has left the language completely.

'Telling the truth', does seem to be a foreign concept now days.
''I'm a humble man, indeed, I have a lot to be humble for.''

Uncle_Lee

Yes, honor and truth are no longer with us. Very few people I know live by them.

I still think that the only contract needed is a handshake. So many people think I am a fool because of that. But my word is my word and I have to live with myself. How people can go back on their word and still look in a mirror is beyond me. If a person's word is no good, then the person is worthless.

I grew up in a totally different generation, with different parents. Our parents raised us, not a TV or a babysetter.

I had a long discussion with my grandson about this.  I coach a baseball team, and my boys have to believe me.

He didn't understand why I don't make promises.

It is a hard concept for young children, now days.

What a crazy bastard. This happened in California? If so, as a bystander, I would have called the cops. If it was my car, I would first try and get out of there, since carrying there for me is illegal. If I couldn't retreat and he reached in the car towards me with the weapon in his hand- he gets shot. Since I do not have a California permit, I would probably go up for illegal gun possession. I figure self-defense beats the rest of the charges, even there.

Moderndayedison

Unless the guy tried attacking me, I would go to

another gas station or wait near by to watch the

entertainment before returning to get my gas.

Why should I spend time in a jail cell or court

room because of those dumb bastards.

It's like having a front row seat to America's

funniest videos......why make it serious by

getting involved with a gun when you have the

   option not to.

And that would be the Judge's take on it too.

   .
And Boom......There it was!!!!

Moderndayedison

And as for the guy busting out the windows,

I would shoot one warning shot in the air

and then take out both feamers.

It would hurt like hell but it probably

woundn't kill him, and that is the argument

   I would make in court.

If you kill him, who's going to pay for the

   damage to your vehicle?

I carry a big can of 10% pepper spray in both of my cars.  I'd empty one in is face.  I think that just bashing the vehicle deserves "less than lethal" force.  If he attacked me with that pipe after that, then its double tap time.  I'm way too old to fight, especially with a drug crazed young gangster like him.

stainless1

As far as the incident at the gas pumps goes, I'd back my vehicle to where I'm out of harms way and call 911 on my cell and get the local cops rolling, give them vehicle and suspect descriptions, license numbers, etc. and just be a good witness.  Then I'd enjoy the entertainment.

orion

Dead as a door nail as quick as I could.

I'd shoot the mother******. But I live in Texas where it's legal to shoot to protect the life of a complete stranger.

I am a disabled veteran and use an arm supported crutch to walk. My main sport was always weightlifting and during my years in the service I

was on a military powerlifting team for a few years.

I still lift but only can use machines now but have

been able to maintain my build and strength close

to what I was in younger years. I figure being in

shape would tend to make a punkster these days maybe look for someone easier but those of us like

myself who have a few years under our belts know

otherwise. In reality if I was to be shoved I would be down for the count but this is where

the NAA pistol I carry brings out reality. Hopefully the looks will still fool the crooks and

not cause me to have to shoot someone but there

has been three occasions where I did have to have

the pistol in hand. Thankgod it was my NAA that

was easy enough to conceal and show when needed.

lashlarue

Agree, the only time I actually fired at an assailant was with a 22mag,the least expensive of all my guns, a Davis 22m derringer. It changed a coked out tough guy with a knife into a babbling idiot, begging for his life.I had a 45 in my waistband, but had the derringer in my hand in my pocket.I meant to shoot a foot over his head, think I came very close to his ear..

gary

I wish you had a picture of that clown. It would be worth a million bucks.

lashlarue

One of these days I'll write up the whole incident, it would make a very interesting story.

red14

I'd like to read it.

Yes I would like to read it also.

It was 1993 and I was babysitting two of my grandkids, age three and eighteen months, when I received a call from my son,he was at his usual hangout a pool hall on 45N. He as usual walked from his apartment, the mile to the pool hall. no sense risking a DUI.He told me this cokehead had threatened to kill him and asked me to come and drive him home. Also said the cokehead had left but was afraid  he might attack him on his way home.So I packed my gkids in my Cherokee, put the derringer in my pocket and slipped my Firestar45 into my waistband. It was only 5 minute drive to the pool hall, told my gkids to stay put and went inside. A more peaceful sight you could not find. There was mu son Mike sitting at the bar and one barmaid, no one else in the place. He said he wanted to finish his beer, then we would go.About that time this little wimp of a guy walked in the front door, my son didn't see him, and I was caught unaware as there was no way this runt would pick a fight with my son, who is 6'1" 240lbs and had been a nose tackle in high school. Then before I could take a deep breath, out came the knife, unopened and he whacked my son on the back of the head.It was on, I pulled the derringer and the two them went at it, moving to a side room with about 8 pool tables, He opened the knife and threw it at my son, missed but it stuck in the wall. Then he made a run for it, grabbing the knife on his way out.By the time we got outside he had headed out of Dodge in a pickup. We went back inside, my son finished his beer and we headed out the door. Son of a gun, there he was again but he brought help.Sort of! The knife was open and he repeated his threats and started toward us. I aimed about a foot over his hear and fired one shot.I'm pretty sure he heard it whiz by his ear, cause he stopped in his tracks and was babbling almost incoherently about not wanting to die.His help turned out to be his girlfriend and his Mother, yes you heard right, his momma. They too begged me not to kill him, I never said a word just gave them my best Clint Eastwood stare. He closed up the knife joined his girlfriend and Momma in the pickup and left.About that time you could hear the sirens, so we decided it was best for us to leave too.Next day found out the barmaid had covered for us, telling the police she too had heard the noise, had walked outside and saw nothing, saying it was most likely a truck backfiring.

Glad to hear everything worked out well and the Barmaid covered for you. I doubt that you would have gotten in any trouble for discharging a Mini at a man with knife and threatening you. But it would probably be a PIA in expaining everything to the police and going through what ever formailties that you may heve to go through when there is a shooting.

ksblazer

Shoot!! I wish there was an edit option. After I posted I realized that you had a davis derringer.

red14

Thanks, Lash.  It is a good thing you were armed, or somebody would have been seriously injured or dead.
''I'm a humble man, indeed, I have a lot to be humble for.''

lashlarue

Texas didn't pass a CHL law till 96 or 97, but you could have loaded handgun or rifle in plain view.I miss the days when just about every pickup had a rifle rack and one or two rifles in their rear window.Thieves didn't bother them, I think most figured the owner was sitting round the corner waiting to ventilate them with a 44 mag.pistol

gary

Lashlarue, that was interesting and I wasn't surprised that he had his momma backing him. Seems

these days some of these punks have no honor.

Moderndayedison

The most powerful weapon in the world is not

the Atom Bomb, but the brain that conceived it.

Never the less, I enjoy shooting handguns.

It's a good stress reliever, and it relaxes me.

Small caliber handguns are also good protection

outdoors from poisonous snakes and other people

that might view you as an easy victim.

Always remember, that in the absense of a police

officer whether you have a handgun or not, you

have the right to defend yourself.

And your assailant can be your victim just as

easily as you can be his....or her's.

I used to drive over the road as a truck driver

and I had a terrible fear of being in some places

like dark allies in Chicago and New York.

Until I realized, they can be even more affraid

of me, than I am of them. So I gave them something

to worry about, and even fear when I was in town.

I didn't have anymore trouble after that.

But I did get my sawed off shotgun conviscated

while making a delivery to a prison.

   I really liked that gun.

But the prison guard that found it gave me

two options...sell it to him for $500 or

have it conviscated where no one gets it.

I only paid $125 for it down in Slidel, LA.

It was a swamp gun. Didn't have any serial

   numbers, but it was beautiful.

Nickle plated 12 gage side by side with a

1911 pistol grip with internal hammers.

When you cracked the gun open to load it

the spent shells popped out thanks to a

spring loaded ejector and opening the gun

cocked the internal hammers so it was ready

to shoot when you closed it.

The latch that held it closed was spring

loaded as well, which means all you had

to do was hit the latch to open the gun

put new shells in it, and slap it shut.

and you were good to shoot again.

And it had a safety that was functional

as well...which is rare for a swamp gun.

It was the ultimate gun if you wanted

   someone to piss their pants.

   I'll get another one someday.

I know their highly illegal but once you

hold such a gun in your hands and feel the

custom workmanship that went into making

such a weapon, little else compares.

I like the Mini Max and the BW too though.

   Quality, where it counts.

I have noticed that S&W is making derringer

style pistols that have 2 side by side barrels

that come in .410 and 12 gage that is basically

   a shotgun pistol.

   Effective range.....about 35 to 50 feet maximum.

You might as well be shooting a slingshot at your

   intended target.

But at close range, it could turn a bad situation

into a recent memory. Which can be a good thing.

Just was in a book store while waiting for my wife and read a gun enthusiast opinions on the 22 magnum

for defense. He stated "I wouldn't send a friend to

a gun fight with a mouse" meaning this isn't the gun

to use. For some reason I just don't agree with him.

Seems we're in a society where bigger is better and more is better which is a load of crap but many fall

for it. Just another example of today's BS!

lashlarue

Yet the military went from 30.06 to 5.56x45, and from 45acp to 9mm. The Russians our other arch enemy went from 7.62x 39 to 5.45x39

gary

Excellent case in point!  There seems to be alot

of people out there who think you need a big gun to do the job. As far as I'm concerned a bullet hole is a bullet hole. I never heard of a crook complaining about the caliber he was shot with.

oldbear

First off, let me state up front that I'm a HUGe fan of the NAA products.  I currently carry a .32 Guardian daily and have packed a .22 Mag mini in a pocket holster daily for many years in the past and still carry one around the farm in the summer with the first round a shot cartridge for 'ol no shoulders.  I've also got a BW that I bought for my wife a good number of years ago and that she carries daily here on the farm.  With that said....Let's get real about personal defense.   Comparing a .22 mag to even a lowly 5.45 or 5.56 is like comparing a 50cc minibike to an 1198 Ducati.  Yea, there are similarities BUT the differnce in power is of at least one order of magnitude!!!  I know a .22 WILL kill, BUT the question is, "how quickly".   If someone is up to no good and coming at you with, say, a big knife, do you want him "dead" 20 minutes from now or stopped instantly.  The answer of course is instantly, and for that, unless you are very, very lucky, a .22, a .32, or even a .380 is, at best, marginal.   I carry an NAA because they are (1) light (2) concealable, and (3) stone reliable. I carry for the same reason I've got a spare tire on my truck.  I don't plan to use either one, but if I need one, I'll need it badly and nothing else will do.  With the NAA, there is no excuse for being unarmed.  However, if I REALLY knew I'd have to use a weapon, NO handgun would be my first choice (think 12 bore or .308), with a 44 or 45 being a poor second choice.  Jeff Cooper once said the only reason for carrying a handgun was to buy you time to get to a long gun.  Sorry for the rant guys, but come on.  Our NAA's are great for what they are and what they're meant for, however let's not talk ourselves into believing they are the best possible defensive weapon...

marlin_levermatic

Howdy all, I've been reading alot of posts on this site. Sounds like alot of folks with some sense. I just put my first BW in layway yesterday. The reason I got my BW is it's so easy to conceal, and the fact it's my favorite caliber of all time - 22 mag. I have put alot of meat on the table with that caliber animals of all sizes from my neck of the woods with no problems. So I don't have no hesitations that it will do all I need it to do for a self defense firearm. Granted there are things alot more powerful that will do the job but if your mule is to big to fit your harness it's hard to plow the field. I pray that I never have to use it. Instantly lethal or not big hole or little hole getting shot is enough to stop most folks. For the ones that don't stop my advice is just keep shooting. If you ain't gonna kill it with 5 22 magnums in the range your using it in there ain't much hope for you to start with no matter what you got.

tranquilo

Welcome, Marlin, to the forum.  The BW is my favorite NAA gun so far - I'm sure you'll enjoy yours!

marlin_levermatic

Thanks Tranquilo, of all the ones I've looked at the BW is my favorite. I like how the grips feel on it an the 2 in instead of the slightly shorter 1 5/8 in barrel of some of the others I've seen. But I did like the one with the 4 in barrel...
