I'm curious if any one else has one of these S&W Walther P22s in their arsenal? I was recently at my local gun shops "tent sale" and there were a number of 22s available at below retail prices. So I asked Fred (The owner) if he thought one was better than the other. He bagan by telling me that the P22 had a rocky start with problems all accross the board but that S&W and Walther have addressed most of them and it is now a very dependable and surprisingly accurate composite framed gun that closely resembles it's 9mm counterpart the P99. Having said that, he asked....is it for plinking or small game? Target and plinking was my answer. He said I can get the S&W 22A if I was looking for a match grade gun or step up to the Ruger. Price wise I told him that the S&W 22A was the bargain in the lot but that I wanted something more compact that I could simply change out the barrel on if I was target shooting competitively. (I have yet to even venture in that direction, but I have thought about it a lot)So....short story long...I took Freds information and sat on it for a day. I returned the next day, hoping that the P22 with the Nickle slide was still there. It was......so home with it I came. I've ran a couple hundred rounds through with out any failures in a variety of 22lr loads with the exception of three FTFs due to duds and two FTFs that did fire through a revolver.

The afore mentioned problems were failure to load due to the design in the clip which left the round to be chambered too low and they would hang up on the ramp to barrel. This was fixed with an improved clip. Another failure to load was due to the slide hanging up on the hammer to slide area. This too was remidied along with a couple other minor changes. I must say that this pistol is an absolute joy to plink with and it's more accurate with it's 3.4" barrel than my Phoenix HP22 with 5" barrel. There are a miriad of accessories available like a 5" match barrel, lasers of different varieties, scopes and Weaver mounts etc. (It's all about the goodies that go along with it ya know?) So....Who else has one and what's your opinion on it. Do you have old troublesome version or the new release that has addressed the problems? Any input will be appreciated.

My decision was also based on the ambidextrous design of the gun since I'm left handed. The magazine release and safety are for either hand.

paulgl26

i had to get a second one so the kids stop fighting over it at the range.if you use newer magazines you are ok

gsr

I had an early one, and eventually sold it.  It was ammo picky, one of the mags wasn't reliable, and the cross pin by the safety kept backing out. I wouldn't be afraid to get another one, but I have other guns higher up on the want list.

zippovarga

All the new one's are shipped with many of the issues worked out and just ONE of the new style magazines. I quickly purchased 2 more to go in my tactical holster and I absolutely love the feel, balance and performance of this little Walther. Thanks for your inputs guys. I'm hoping more will chime in over time.

red14

I bought my wife one.  She practices with it, then shoots a couple clips on her Bersa.  Saves money.

I have been tinkering with the GSP: intersting concept. The moneys about the same and the mags are identical except for the baseplates: Accuracy seems about the same too So far I haven't found the magic ammo that it prefers. (My P-22 likes the federal HP bulk stuff.)

oldbear

Like GSR, I bought an early model new and found it to be extremely ammo sensitive.  So much so that I wound up trading it off.  With that said, I liked the feel of the piece and the way it shot (when it didn't jam

Hey Red14,

I'm good! Just wasn't seeing my new posts and finally figured it out. Would like yo know how to post photos but the formatting help area says I need Netscape or IE which I can't get to work on this iMac which by default uses Safari, which won't allow it either. LOL! I have a pretty good collection of handguns, a Ruger New Vaquero Stainless 45 Colt, a Cimarron Arms Doc Holliday w/ Shoulder Holster holding it and the matching dagger (1 of 500), 2 Davis Derringers 1 38 and 1 22, a Sig Sauer P238 380, a Beretta 25, 2 Walther PPK/S 32 and 380, a S&W Model 10, a S&W 5906 9mm, a Colt Combat Commander and a Colt New Agent both 45 ACP, a Bond Arms Derringer with 3 barrels, and my favorite till my Sidewinder ships, a NAA 22 Mag Mini which is my constant companion. When the Sidewinder arrives, I will carry both!

Doc Holliday

Hi all,

Sorry about the test post. Have figured it out now. I have several handguns, but so far only one NAA, a 22 Mini Mag w/ the longer barrel. I carry it daily along with my 9MM S&W 5906 issue weapon. (I'm a Deputy Sheriff with 34 years of service)

My other weapons include: a 2nd 9mm S&W 5906, an S&W Model 10' A Stainless Ruger Vaquero in 45 Long Colt( has an extra cylinder for 45 ACP), A Davis Derringer in 38 Special as well as the same in 22LR. I have a 25 Cal Beretta with the tilt down barrel, and a Taurus Judge in Stainless.(I like to joke that I bought the NAA 22 MiniMag as a keychain for the Judge...lol)

Seriously though, I think the MiniMag is a fantastic little weapon and carry it always. As a cop, I may have a little different view from some as to what an effective weapon is. In my long experience, I have seen many persons killed wiht a 22, not to mention a small kubotan stick. It's all in how skilled and or determined the user is!

   Thanks for the great forums,

   Unkei

   Another gun person. Thats great.

   welcome to the forum.

As we go along, fill us in on

where you have been and what you

   have seen

I have carried a NAA mini in one form

or another since somewhere in the mid

seventies. We were on a highway on a

motorcycle when a car that had been setting

in front of a bar in the little town

we had just left pulled up beside us and

the guy in the back seat stuck a 12 ga.

shotgun out the window at us and racked the

slide. I had no gun. Another car appeared and

they backed off and I out ran them.

   Been armed ever since.

I know I have said this before but I will

say it again. Some of something is better

than none of nothing. Thats where minis come in.

They are something and they can always be there.

Doc Holliday

Hi Coinchop,

Thanks for your thoughts. I think what happened to you would have been frightening in any circumstances, but definitely while straddling a bike. My wife and I recently bought two new Honda Rebels and are just learning to ride (me at 62 years old!)When I retire we are planning to purchase a Trike, either a Harley or Honda Goldwing and head off for Mexico.

As for where I've been and what I've seen, that may take awhile, but if anyone's really interested I'll give it a shot over time.

About the Minis I fully agree. The best weapon to have in a serious situation is the one you actually have with you. That, and the necessary mindset to use it.

Motorcycles are a part of my life. I have been riding for 44 years. Both road and of the road.

I have put over 100 thousand miles total on two  of my bikes since 04. Thats not counting miles on the other bikes I have.

One of the things I wanted to do in life was to ride a street legal big dirt bike across the U.S. on railroad right of ways where I could.

It doesn't look like I will get that done. I don't think I have the guts to ride across those high, long, railroad trestles like I have done in the past.

   Happness is guns and motorcycles.

   Take care.

Thats impressive. There is hope for all of us.

We just have to keep moving.

My girl friend had a 1964 mercury comet convertable red and white with white top, 4 barrel carb and 4 on the column, might have been the cyclone, saw one the other day at a car show...what memories

woodchuckssuck

My grandfather is 80 years young, he doesnt look a year over 70 though. He keeps moving, cutting and splitting his own wood, tinkering in his wood/metal shop, going for daily walks, snowblowing his driveway in the winter (he lives in the Tug Hill NY area, LOTS of snow), and generally just keeps moving. Winter does bring him more naps, but the rest of the year he is out and active. While he doesnt carry a gun (he is licensed to and has a .25auto that he has also allowed me to put on my permit) but in his area of NY, no one is dumb enough to start anything with anyone.

I only hope I am in as good of condition when I am his age. I will have a gun on me, however

chopprs

Ok, I had the wifes car out and noticed it was pretty grungy. So when I got home I got the vacuum out and started to vacuum the rugs. Aren't I a nice guy? I am almost done and the wife comes out and says she has to go, she has an appointment. When I has started to vacuum I was bending over in a contorted sort of way and the PUG in the Madhat holster was kind of uncomfortable in my pocket so I had set it on the roof of the car with the floormats. YUP!!! I put the floormats back in and she said "BYE" and drove away. Around the corner at the end of the driveway and the gun falls in the middle of the street and gets run over by a car! I ran out and picked it up and there is a small mark on the Hoague grip and that is it. I inspected it REEEAALLL careful then fired it. It is perfect and undamaged! What a great little gun! A true testament to a quality, overengineered product!  Built like a Sherman Tank..........

red14

WOW, what a report.  I wouldn't do it (on purpose), but it sure passes the test for brawn.
''I'm a humble man, indeed, I have a lot to be humble for.''

...I forgot to add, i have a little machine shop here. When I checked it I used a machinists straight edge on every straight edge on the gun and looked at it with a magnifying glass very carefully. It did absolutely no damage to the gun that I can see(other than the mark on the grip). I am also sure that the Madhat holster protected it a little too..... Thanx Madhat!

Randy

Chopprs,

I have a similar story that happened recently that came out better but had a potentially worse outcome.

I was using my tractor and bush-hog cutting some roads on my property. I had a Pug in a clip-on fabric holster. I'll bet you can see where this is going. I would check occasionally for Pug and phone. After cutting several swaths, I checked and phone was there, holster was there, but Pug was gone. I did remember once feeling a "bump" on the right floor board and looked down but saw nothing. It's not too uncommon for the blade of the rotary mower to fling a stick or something at me.

I went back to the area that it happened and there it was in the grass. The blade had not hit it. I'm pretty sure if it had, I would need a new Pug.

The first thing I thought of were the new holsters Madhat had just made for it, that I had received that same day and had not even opened the package yet. I'm thinking "I've got new holsters for a gun I don't have anymore"!

The next time I will be using Madhat's holster and that won't happen.

   Randy

That is one of the reasons I like the NAA firearms.

   They're built to last.

oldbear

Stainless steel's pretty good stuff...makes ya wonder about a plastic pistol in the same circumstances though doesn't it?

Moderndayedison

I want a new Mini MAX Magnum or a BW.

I have a Foid Card and I already own

   a few rifles, I don't have a Police

   Record.

But I seem to be having trouble tracking

these two pistols down through dealers

because they always seem to be out of

stock. Can anyone give me any pointers

on how to locate these pistols for

   purchase?

   Thanks in advance.

Howdy,

Thought I'd post a hello and introduce myself.  My name is Aaron, and I'm a very proud NAA gun owner.

The best investment I ever made was to buy my wife a dozen roses for Valentine's Day, 1991... roses that I could not afford.  That brought about the "oh, honey, they're lovely!  I feel bad because I didn't get you anything..."

Long story short, a quick trip to Gallenson's in downtown SLC and I was the proud owner of a 1-1/8" .22LR mini-revolver.  I've taken to calling it my Most Unusual Valentine's Present.

By the way, I couldn't afford even a .22LR mini-revolver any more than I could the roses for my wife.  But I've learned to enjoy a hot bowl of vegetable soup three meals a day for a while.  It's downright healthy.

I have to admit that I've never even brandished my little mini-revolver.  Furthermore I'm sort of proud of that fact.  But there are a few times when I had it unholstered and very firmly in hand, inside a coat pocket, while thanking my lucky stars I owned a gun small enough to take pretty much anywhere.

Owning an NAA must be infectious.  Once my family saw mine, a brother and my father ended up each with a Black Widow.  My Pa liked mine a lot but his big, retired working man's hands can't close tightly around that little birdshead grip well enough to control the gun.  So we chipped in and got him the Black Widow.  He packs it around to this day (as does my brother).  My Pa even sewed up a special pocket to the inside front of some of his bib overalls that he wears on trips up to his mountain property in northern California.  He has plenty of bigger stuff, but once again the NAA is always there while the hand cannons are often unloaded and locked away.

Fast forward a few years.  I like the L.W. Seecamp quite a lot, but I've only ever seen one of them in person.  It was used, battered and expensive.  When I heard about the NAA Guardian, I got pretty excited.  It's just flat more available than a Seecamp and has most if not all the same qualities.  It also has a good mag release on the grip instead of the Seecamp's heel release.

I'v only seen a Guardian in person once -- a .32 ACP.  Fortunately for me, my father in law liked it too and snapped it up.  It took me nine years, but I finally got him to trade me for it.

Getting a new-to-me Guardian .32 ACP gave me an excuse to go to the website and see what accessories are available for it.  I'm super happy to see all the stuff for it!  I'm also excited by the new firearms NAA developed -- the Earl, the Pug and something about a .32 H&R Magnum mini?  Oh my.

   I'm a patient man.  Valentine's 2010 isn't that far off.

Anyways I look forward to asking and answering some questions sharing my enjoyment of these fine firearms.

   Regards,

Aaron:

   WELCOME TO THE FORUM.

   Sounds like life is good.

   The excitement in life seems

to be having, wanting, and waiting

    when it comes to guns.

Its pretty easy to get caught up

in the NAA guns. I have been carrying

one or two around with me for over thirty

years. More than once it felt good to have

my hand wrapped around one in my pocket.

It makes you feel more cofident and I think that showes in a time of need.

Happy valentine's day on the next one.

grayelky

Welcome to the forum.

I only have 2: a 22 lr Mini I have had since '77, and The Earl ( #82) I am picking up tomorrow. If I had a nickel for every time I have wrapped my hand around my 22 mini as a reassurance I could get to my other gun, I could pay for The Earl.
Guns are a lot like parachutes:

"If you need one and don't have one, you'll probably never need one again"

Welcome Grayelky and Flash, to the forum.

Stay awhile, we're a good group.  Share your stories and information.  We are just one big happy (mostly) family.

Thanks y'all for the welcome.

I did some reading and yep, it seems like a decent bunch of folks... that's becoming unfortunately less common on the internet as time goes on.

Grayelky, congratulations on the Earl.  I'd sure like one too, for fun plinking and stuff.  Of course the problem is, NAA keeps making stuff I'd like to have. ;-)
