Folding Grip Modification

I have a 22lr with the folding grip. When I first saw it I noticed that the grip can be modified to make the gun a great palm pistol. Further testing works perfectly. Anyone else tried this? Maybe NAA could use my idea? I have plans drawn up. T

Okay, I added some pics. Basically a spring loaded stainless machine screw that hits the trigger w/ grip closed. If the grip was made w/ the front inch solid one could just drill + c'bore for the screw. I used JB weld to fill the cavity first. Has worked perfectly for all 30 rounds tested. And Thanx for the welcomes ! T

If pics are not readily available, at least describe what you have done. Inquiring minds want to know. So do I!  :)

Howdy! I ordered the folding grip, but after putting it on my 22 mag revolver, I did not like it, so I put the original grips back on. I would like to see a picture or description of how you modified yours, as I may then be able to modify mine, so that the money I paid for it won't have been wasted. Thanks.

I of course have no idea of what the OP did,
But years ago a fellow at the range I went to had a folding grip and he had removed the clip then taken a dremel to it and cut out a just enough material so he could get his finger though and fire it with the grip closed,
I always worried that he had weakened the plastic but it fired open or closed, kind of like the old wallet holsters.

Not to change thread topic but I would liketo know just what concealed carry consists of . Why not be abe to carry in anything as long as the gun is not visible like a holster with a full flap that snaps down . I always wondered about this , anybody have any answers . ??? ???

Varies state to state.  Packing.org has a new URL, but they had the answers.

Generally, open carry is it is clear you are hauling a firearm.  A holster with a flap, might be open carry, while a cell phone case might be concealed carry.

Some numb nuts in California pushed open carry to the point it is no longer legal in ca.  You swat a hornets nest, you get stung.  Everything was better before they started carrying pistols on their belts at the Starbucks in upper class, very safe areas.

Like Kevin55 stated, it is dependant upon your state, or the state you are in. In Georgia, a Weapons Carry License is required whether you are carrying open or concealed, with a few limited exceptions. One would be when hunting, no License is required as long as you have a valid hunting license.

That's pretty cool. Nice work.

What does this mod do? Does it just keep the hammer from being moved while folded?

trock59

The first thing I noticed about the gun was that one still had to use two hands to open the grip for firing - or use the one hand flip like a blade. My modification allows me to fire w/out opening the grip - Just cock the hammer and press the screw in front. It pushes the trigger and Bang!

TeeJay37

Oh, okay. the "Trigger" screw is spring loaded?

Yes, after drilling the thru hole  in the JB weld, I made a counter bore @ the front for a spring.
update - I have had official blueprints drawn up!

One of the things that makes this forum so good is the extent our members go to to help each other! I cant imagine the cost to Trock went to just to hae a nice set of blue prints drawn up, just for us! :) Why, I bet even OV-1D could follow them :)!

Trock-
I am not a fan of the folding grip, but then I also am not a fan of the pocket clip on my knife. I have customers who clip the grip on their pocket, making it look just like a knife. As they remove it from the pocket, they catch the barrel on the seam and pulling slightly rearward, open the pistol and lock the grip. By the time you realize they have made a move, they have the revolver point in the direction it needs to be and ready to fire. Again, this is one of those things that make commercials useful. Gives you a chance to practice. Oh, and be double sure your mini is unloaded. I am not responsible for holes in your flat screen!

The best would be to have the old up the sleeve spring loaded wrist mount like James West had.

Thanks Trock that's pretty interesting just make sure its legal . Funny thing about the law one can carry a hidden gun but a modified one might not be , better check . But you sure have your thinking cap on , cool .  ;)

I haven't made any modifications to the firearm itself, only the grip. Grips can be changed or modified to fit the user - I also live in Florida - out in the country Fla. not the condo areas.

doc_stadig

Of course many states may make their own rules, but I believe that would be exempt from the AOW law in that it doesn't change the basic shape of the weapon, this is legal in most states that permit concealed carry http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Gear-Ruger-Pistol-Holster/dp/B0081ZR8H4/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1385591460&sr=8-15&keywords=wallet+holster+for+ruger+lcp
The NAA Wallet holster that was made a while ago, changes the appearance to it being unrecognizable as a pistol, thus an AOW permit is required.
My question would be, how much control does this mod permit, the folding grip was designed to allow better grasp for the hand, I was trying to see if I could get a repeatable grasp on my Magnum with the folding grip, and couldn't see any way to grasp it in any kind of control for a followup shot. I like the concept, but I didn't see it working for my revolver.
Keep up the ideas, this doesn't work for me, but I'm always interested in the various ideas this forum comes up with to make their revolver their own.
Someone said something about using the back of the pocket as leverage for opening their holster grip, that's the way I do mine, sometimes I'll even throw that bayonet blade designed for the mini's on as a different way to help open it up. That will only work on deep pockets, though. ;)  ;)  ;)

Doc

trock59

Thanx for the links Doc, The only change in appearance is the screw visible at the front- unless my finger is on it - thats why I went w/ the 1 5/8 barrel. I've found that I can pull the gun from my pocket using a thumb on the hammer, then grip it w/ring and middle fingers and cock it when it's fully drawn - all they (might) see is the muzzle before the flash.

Dinadan

Trock59 - that is an interesting modification; thanks for posting the photos. Have you shot the gun with that grip?  Looks like the trigger finger is real close to the cylinder gap when you fire it as a palm gun - on my minis it is quite painful to have a finger or thumb tip near the cylinder gap.

I was actually just going to mention that. Gotta be careful with that.

Nobody realizes that cylinder blast but live and learn . Happy Thanksgiving again everyone , eat well , love easy and spend wisely oh and shoot straight .

Cylinder blast from a 22?  Over 45 rounds and no problems. Of course I was a mechanic/ machinist for a bit so maybe my hands are seasoned but, against a snake or criminal a little cylinder blast is nothing.

I have been bitten on the fingers by several snakes (nonpoisonous) and I can tell you for a fact that the blast from the cylinder gap on my .22 LR Mini hurts a lot worse than a snake bite! I will grant that a criminal attack would be worse!

Anyway, glad to read that you mini does not hurt so much as to spoil your modification, which I really like the look of.

I like that trock59 it's hot dang.

Do you think you could post video of you firing the mini with this mod?  Fire a couple of rounds so we can see the effects of recoil on gun/hand position/recovery.

Thanks.

trock59

Recoil?  from a 22?  Just hold the closed grip in your hand with middle and ring fingers, use thumb to cock hammer and you are good to go - press the screw head in and it fires -done. I have noticed it does kick up the barrel a little (unfolds) when fired but the biggest downside is the black marks on my trigger finger from the muzzle "blast" after a few rounds. She's in my pocket everyday and I answer my neighbor (with ground aimed) shots whenever he shoots off bottle rockets at the squirrels next door. Have red oak grip panels rough cut but not fitted yet.  Never an issue with this gun- ever.  Next is the Black Widow or Pug! Love this gun! T

I wonder if you could add "blast shields" to the folding grip to increase firing comfort.

It certainly does look like a fun and unusual mod.
