Considering a C&B Companion

Hello all, first post here, and I've long since been considering getting my hands on one of the cap and ball revolvers (most likely going to be the first of many  :P), and I'm stuck between choosing the Super Companion or the Earl Cap and Ball. There's one thing that I want to know before I make a final decision. Does anyone happen to know whether or not using a percussion cap alone will fire a .22 airgun pellet? I've seen someone do this with the Super Companion, but I want to know if this would work in the Earl with the longer 4'' barrel. I'd like to be able to shoot indoors when I can't go out and shoot standard loads. If the cap alone won't cut it, any suggestions on a low power load for these guns? Thanks in advance!

Can't help with your question but a hardy WELCOME to ya . It would be pretty cool in the Earl model I think , good luck .  :)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

No clue , but would like to know. Let us know if you find out....

Nick,
Yep,it should propel the 22 airgun pellet but the caps are not anywhere near as powerful as a regular centerfire primer.

No such real thing as reduced power BP loads as BP needs to be somewhat compressed. Blows up have taken place with reduced black power loads.

Some folks have tried filling the void of reduced powder with a filler such as corn meal. I guess in a small chamber it might just work.

Just to be safe, why not call North American Arms and ask for their advice??

I have written many posts here about pellet rifle pellet from a Companion. I load my chamber with 3F, probably 777 powder. I think Pyrodex is too spongy. I fill the chamber as you should, but place my dome headed pellets down into the cylinder. Never ever fire the chamber straight from this step. Always crimp the loading press into the revolver cylinder. Since the smaller Companions dont have this, you should load 4F black powder with the stock NAA bullet. If you load the skirt side first towards the powder, you are just asking for a problem to happen.

Either way you slice it, you must fill the rest of the cylinder with your buffer grease to try to eliminate any chance of a chain fire... that is... one chamber lights, many go off.

From a 4" NAA C&B Earl, I don't mind taking 15 foot shots on small game with an H&N Barracuda dome head (round nose to powder charge) pellet rifle pellet.

I think we're asking different questions, though. I'm not "plinking" with .22 pellets from my NAA C&B Earl.

By the way, "Trail Boss Powder" is carefully marked as "not a black powder substitute." Based on the maker's markings, Trail Boss most likely shouldn't be used in NAA Cap and Ball minis, regardless that it should probably work fine.

Nick,
I fired a couple of Crosman 22 pellets out of my Companion using just the Remington #11 caps. Seemed to work OK but the report was still sharp. I equate it with shooting a CB Long from a mini.
It sure would attract atention from close neighbors outside and I would recommend ear protection inside.
