I would really like to have and shoot one of these cap & ball revolvers.  But the real problem is where to shoot.  Indoor ranges won't allow them, outdoor ranges are too distant or non-existent.  Indoor ranges say there is too much smoke and too much unburned powder, and, I guess, too risky.

I guess that I am just venting my frustration with this note.

Perhaps you need to change your address. ;)

Why not shoot it in your back yard?

RougeTS1--The Companion may be small and black powder but can still kill even down range. If willr is new to our sport he may try something unwise.  Half the country is blessed with open country around them .The rest of us have to remember basic gun safety . ALL guns are loaded. DO NOT point it at anything you are not willing to destroy . KNOW your target AND what is BEHIND it!  KEEP your finger off the trigger until ready to fire. I know you all know this but review is good. I have been chewed out at the range for minor mistakes! A few months ago the news was about a man who was shot in gun safety class by the INSTRUCTOR. Advice  can be a dangerous gift. We ,myself included, need to think before we advise.

I am not new to the sport!  My favorite in the past was an old Remington Army Cap and Ball which I used to shoot when I lived in New Mexico over 60 years ago.  Now I live in the Southeast where open spaces are much more rare.  There is a black powder range about 70 miles away -- too far for occasional shooting.
Somebody once wrote that for every complicated problem  there is a solution which is simple, easy, inexpensive and wrong.
As I wrote before, perhaps I am just venting my frustration.

OLD and GRUMPY

Willr--Did not mean to offend. Over the last few years I have seen many people walk out of a gun shop with there first gun and a box of shells. They have played way to much video games but it is clear they don't have a clew about the real thing. If I told them to pop one off in the back yard they would do it! Shop owners have seen the rise in the moron factor after the panic buying died down.Good luck finding a range I am almost as limited as you.The BP mini is fun.All the burnt powder and top lube will end up on your hands.Bring hand soap!

Old and Grumpy -- I did not intend to criticize -- just to point out the paradox.   You are absolutely right about some newcomer who doesn't really know what fIrearms are and how they absolutely must be used correctly.  I was in a LGS recently, there was a fellow looking at an AK lookalike.  He said to his girlfriend that that was what he wanted, so buy it.  In all likelihood he could not qualify himself.  Unfortunately, the LGS was unable to stop the purchase.

I never said the black powder gun could not kill. I also never make assumptions about one's gun IQ. I simply asked why he could not/did not use his back yard. My intent was to nudge the conversation into the realm of where he lives and what the local ordinances allow/disallow based upon the direction the thread seemed to be heading.

Now do not take this the wrong way. I am not making insinuations towards you nor upset in any way. I am simply making an observation.

In my opinion; safety nazis seem to be virally invading our society. Now it may be somewhat necessary given the state of our society but I just feel that one should not have to always include a "pre conversation" safety/release from liability clause when discussing guns, power tools, etc. If one needs help I feel one should ask for it and then it can be readily given or if a beginner is being schooled then yes it is automatically given but when speaking generally or amongst those in the know; I find the safety nazi tiring and often times incorrect in their instructions on how something is or should be done.

RogueTS1--I apologize for coming on too strong. I should have voiced my concern in a way that did not sound lecturing.I  agree about the Safety Nazis. The problem is that too many new shooters pass the background check but fail at common sense .They seam to end up at the range standing next to me! Again I apologize and will try to mellow out. I joined this blog to learn and I am.

When the shop owner heard that statement he knew that it was a "straw purchase" and could have refused the sale. (I think  8) )

No apologies necessary but thank you none the less.
