Looking for a good load for my BW, I found Win Supreme 34 gr impressive, going 1125 fps adv.

   Others were CCI +v 30 gr....1150......

   Win Dynapoint  45 gr.........850...........

   CCI maxi mag 40 gr...........890.........

Win std laos 40 gr .........1000......

Follow up to my Chrony numbers.... I just bought a box of CCI TNT, it was the hottest by far of any load I could find clocking a 30 gr pill at 1230 fps adv. from the BW.

The Win Supreme, once again, jammed on a case. weak brass no doubt.

Not all that clear what the differences are between the TNT and +v...velocities and bullets are different but why?

I am curious why your results are so much less than the results on this web site?

Do you have the information about distance from barrel, altitude & temprature for your test & if those numbers could account for the large difference.

Hi Theysayimnotme:

   Who are you writing to?

Last year, Shooterjb mentioned that he picked up a cheap chronograph. That got me thinking to check them out. Without intending to buy one, I ended up buying a Chrony Gamma Master. (I found a great deal on the web that was so good, that I bought it on a whim.)

Easy to use, but I haven't used it enough to know what I'm doing without reading the manual every time. Also, I'm still amazed that it works, and works well.

My Chrony prints out the data and gives me a run of 10 shots with high/low readings, SD, and range. I'm suppose to figure out energy myself.

But so far, what actually happens is that I go to the range, set it up (by eye with the first screen set-up about 8 feet from the bench), shoot, and then say "wow--this is cool" over the readings.

So I think what these guys did is what I've been doing, having fun with some informal testing.

Maybe next year, when I get comfortable with my Chrony, maybe I will do some really serious testing. Then I will bury you with data. But in the mean time, I think it is great that others are sharing their findings with us. And yes, I am also curious about the data, but for a different reason. I'm more interested in how they actually test their ammo.

NAA and Cjishere2 used to set their equipment 8 feet away from the bench. But I've noticed gun rags to set up stuff 15 feet away. So far I haven't run across any industry standard in how velocity is tested.

In playing around with my Chrony, I've noticed a big, big difference in reported velocity if I move the screens farther away.

That is what I was wondering. If different testing procedures would account for the large difference in results.

15 feet instead of 8 feet would make an obvious difference but how much & in what way would a difference in altitude & temperature make.

This does make it obvious that such details must be noted to make the results useful.

Hi Theysayimnotme:

Just my fooling around shows that there can be a wide margin in data, with fairly minor changes in distance. But like anything, it is ammo dependent. Some ammo the changes were slight. That's why I haven't posted anything. I'm not comfortable with my Chrony yet. And I'm not really talking about the equipment. I is more about my base of knowledge.

I set the Chrony about 6' downrange. I found the bullet path must be exactly parallel to the screens or you will get a high reading. temp about 70 or so 250' MSL

By all means share your information, George. I've been looking to get a chrony for a few years now, but haven't gotten around to it.

I'm VERY curious to know what the velocity from the CCI +V ammo would be out of my 12-inch Taurus. I've also got some 30-, 40-, and 50-grain Winchesters that would be fun to test.

Hi Gau5gunner:

The first time I used my Chrony, I didn't open up the matal screen fully (It looked like it was open all the way, but I closed it slightly while setting it up), and noticed a increase in velocity, between my early shots and after I figured put what I did wrong.

Hi Darvell:

One of the reasons I haven't done any serious testing yet is that every time I set it up at the range, a line forms to use it.

I was even toying with the idea to buy a rebuilt basic one to let other use it while I'm at the range.
