OLD and GRUMPY

In high school I bought a Golden States Arms Centurion mod 123. That's a 30-06 on a Mauser 98 action. It has bead front and folding leaf rear sights. As a teen I could hit the long mark across the canyon just guessing at elevation. Probably 400--500 yards. Not any more !   I can still hit the mark at the 250 yard berm but its fuzzy. The kids with the $800 rifles and high tec optics cant believe this can be done without a scope. Could not afford a scope as a kid so I had to learn to shoot. What gun to teach a kid to shoot with is another topic for another time. The  receiver is drilled. Any  suggestions for a mount and scope? No idea what to get.Can probably do the work my self. Price is still a big factor.  I put this off to buy my mini. Thanks.

I've heard many suggestions that a proper scope should cost about half to twice the price of the rifle.

I have liked zero scopes I've tried for under $150.

From experience get the best you can afford, and start saving your money for the one you really need. I've got $1500 scopes on $500 rifles. But when it comes to hunting, spend the most money on your binoculars. Can't shoot what you can't see.

Went to the range again today.  Took the 98 to try to work out the sight problems and the desert rat 10-22 from 1971 to proof some new mags and test several brands of .22 I had never run through it. I set up a 12" target at 100 yards with a   wind blowing left to right. After about 20 rounds of reload and factory only 3 were on the target. Got VERY bummed out! "A poor craftsman will blame his tools". Then I broke out the 10-22 (another one of Hectors old guns) to just have some fun testing ammo and mags. Same target same 100 yards same wind same old grumpy fart on the trigger. What appeared on the target?  A nice thick 6" cluster 5 inches low and 2" right!!!  The Mauser is going to REHAB!!

Hows that rifling on that Mauser ? Those were and are some of the best sniper weapons in their days . Wind is always a factor for those bullets but a scope is very much worth it with them . Good luck .  ;)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

The bore is good. It is a 30-06 on a civilian 98 action Wish I had a military type. The sights are banged up and I am not as good as I was.

I understand the dilemma. Firing from the front leaning rest is tougher as the seconds pass by.
