2GJ,
If I were to respond to your stating that "the sun rises in the east" by declaring "that is nonsense, 2GJ is not to be believed as he cheats at cards and is believed to be a defiler of young sheep", that would be an ad hominem attack.
It is unfortunate that I felt it necessary to make the post I did as you do have much to offer and, when you're not in rant mode, write well.
However, in the year and a half you have been here you've made over four thousand posts with most of them being strongly assertive and very few brief and to the point.
You appear to have a need to be the expert at everything and, to this end, employ Google very effectively. You jump in to most any thread and always speak with a degree of authority that is, more often than not, unwarranted.
As to people not calling your errors, opinions stated as fact or incorrect conclusions drawn, that would necessitate a full time position and in the end, is just not worth it.

CW,
My apologies.  As you were coming across all giddy-like and seemed overly impressed with the killing abilities of the .22WMR I figured you to be new to shooting and probably without practical experience.  Too many without experience in the field are unduly influenced by the often misleading information available online. Am glad to hear you are not one of them.

No worries and surely no apologies needed.  ;) The internet is blind this way, we all have the same anonymity.  :o ::) ;D

Not new to shooting. Just new here. :)

Hey, how do you know so much about me?!?  ;)

QuoteIt is unfortunate that I felt it necessary to make the post I did as you do have much to offer and, when you're not in rant mode, write well.

Thank you. I hate it when I look up and I'm ranting. We all have things about ourselves that we don't like. That's mine.

QuoteYou appear to have a need to be the expert at everything and, to this end, employ Google very effectively. You jump in to most any thread and always speak with a degree of authority that is, more often than not, unwarranted.

If a backhanded compliment is all I can get, it'll have to do. Believe it or not, I don't web search and plagiarize. I credit sources, if I use them. It's my thoughts that lead me to a source, not the other way around. I've got too darn many words in my head to need to steal them from others.

QuoteAs to people not calling your errors, opinions stated as fact or incorrect conclusions drawn, that would necessitate a full time position and in the end, is just not worth it.

With the knowledge level here, if I said something obviously wrong... it would be shot down very quickly. Some here are very quick to do that for sport.

Anyway, I'm not even mad. Constructive feedback is important in a community.

Let's talk about guns. It is why we are here, correct? I am and always will be a fan of NAA minis.

Gentlemen (and ladies,)

What does the forum suggest for self-defense ammunition for the NAA model NAA-1860-4C, the 4" Earl? Is it the same as the Pug?

Thanks much for your insight.

BT.

I've been impressed by the reliability of all CCI Maxi-Mag, Winchester "Super-X" 40gr JHP, and Speer Gold Dot (Manufactured by CCI, by the way).  I tried two boxes of Winchester PDX-1 and experienced LOTS of misfires--if memory serves, somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 per box.

I have also found a lot of useful information on projectile energy/penetration/efficacy at http://shootingthebull.net/blog/

Part of me is wondering why I am making this post.

As I have read through to this point, I get the feeling TGJ is being attacked, and called out as to whether he actually knows what he is talking about, or is adept at copying. It also came up about he length of his posts. My thoughts:

Yes, he does write a lot. For the most part, if you read what he has to say, it is actually worth reading. Sometimes, I just don't have the patience to read that much. I know enough about ballistics that I have yet to find anything he has written to be far enough off "facts" for me to call him on it. Typically, when he and I see things a little differently, it is opinion rather than a dispute of facts. There is a difference. No one on this board has ever met me, so you don't know me, but I assure you I will not hesitate to call BS, if an opinion is presented as fact. My question regarding the camera and job: What difference does it make? I know several guys who have quite a few guns, and shoot some of them, yet they cannot make any sense of bullet weight vs velocity. Just what in blazes will it prove if TGJ or anyone else produces a picture of 8 minis, 14 handguns 37 rifles and a shotgun? If you don't understand what he is writing, send him a PM, and I am willing to bet he will help you to make sense of ballistics. As to him being long winded, heck, I am guilty of that. Could either of us be more concise? No doubt. Will it happen? Not likely, at least not for me.

Any time you want something to do, wander into your local gun shop, and casually ask to look at a handgun. Then mention you are considering a new hand gun for the night stand, and you were trying to decide if a 9mm or .45 would be better. If a discussion does not break out, you are probably in WalMart, not a gun shop. And by the way, the correct answer to that question is 12 gauge.

It is good to know which ammo is best in our minis. The trouble is, there is no best answer. I have my opinions, and they do not follow TGJ exactly. Don't make me right and him wrong. Also don't make me wrong, either. If you are new here, after reading all of this, pick a brand and load your gun. Buy a box of every kind of .22 mag ammo you can find. Go do your own experiments. Penetration, expansion, accuracy, even which box is prettier. At some point, you will start noticing you are developing your own opinions. Good. Go with that load. Bottom line is, has been and will be: There is no handgun that is feasible to carry as an every day item that will bring a bad guy to a sudden and instant halt 10 out of 10.

Agree on ammo? Heck, we can't even agree on which mini is best......

Okay, Gray makes a valid point. Some of TGJ's posts may not be to my taste, but he does his research and I cannot say he is wrong.

Has anyone tried the  CCI Maxi-Mag .22 WMR Ammo Troy Landry Edition 40 grain JHP?  Seems like the same round as the CCI Maxi Mags minus the holder, plus extra money. I saw them at Gander Mountain over the weekend and they had plenty on the shelf.

Uncle_Lee

I think you will be paying more for Troy's name on the box.
I like "Swamp People" but would not pay extra to have a name on a box of ammo (unless it was John Wayne).

When was it deciphered, two gun Jayne was a boy? Rather than a girl, Jayne... Like, feck, thought I was in there he he.

When you touch minds, does the physical matter one bit? I could actually be a bed-ridden cancer patient. :) There's been some great fiction on that topic: that of "something human squeezed through a wire," as writer John Sayles would say. (quoted from short story: Nebraska I-80, about truck drivers, cb radios, and reactions to a disruptive presence on the "net.")

In any case, the name is inspired by a bit of fiction. The character's title is the "Hero of Canton."
Jayne Cobb: Shepherd Book once said to me, "If you can't do something smart, do something right."

Anyway, I haven't had time to check the forum. I drop off now and then, believe it or not.

Bow season for deer starts in 2 weeks and I need more brush-up practice, haven't planted winter greens crops because the weather has been perfect (and distracting,) and I've gotten hooked on a Libertarian-themed book called "The Black Arrow." If it were a movie, it would be NC-17 in the name of the First Amendment. It's about resisting a tyrannical government.

Thanks for the thoughts and encouragement, fellow forumites. I never want to be disruptive, but I do get on a rant now and then. Sorry in advance about that.

OV: When I finally get my "crap" together, I'll post a nice picture thread for you. My camera is bad and I'm a lousy photographer. By default, 100% of any category of my stuff is never in a single place. Eggs and baskets, you see. If you came to my dwelling and saw my "flashlight" shelf, you'd think I only had cheap lights. That's the "decoy shelf." Anything above $40 is scattered around such that it cannot be taken all at once. I've been robbed before, you see.

Again, thanks for the compliments. Anyone can improve, I'll try to meet everyone halfway.

Also, I like the above thoughts of "if it's good from a short barrel, it gets better from a long one." I feel the standard 1 5/8" mini is the baseline and you'll have a hard time getting any "worthless" .22 mag for any NAA. They just might act slightly differently, that's all.

That 4" would turn any mag ammo into something more impressive than a shorter barrel. I think the short barrels will still be effective, though. 40-50 fpe can be effective for a wide variety of reasons.

Is it all in the mind? Similar to the local deer hunters who feel naked with "only 3,000 foot pounds" in a .30 rifle, deer have been felled many times before with less than 130 fpe. What could it be other than skill and shot placement?

Training, knowledge and familiarity give confidence. I think we all need more of that, no matter how much we have.

TwoGunJayne

QuoteI've gotten hooked on a Libertarian-themed book called "The Black Arrow." If it were a movie, it would be NC-17 in the name of the First Amendment. It's about resisting a tyrannical government.

The best ammunition for self defense is awareness, education, and knowledge. You cannot fight or resist if you were unaware of the threat (or the tyranny.)

"The Black Arrow," by Vin Suprynowicz. (Not the RLS book.) It's kind of like "50 shades of Libertarianism."

In that book, the most important weapon against tyranny is to notice it. Some people knock the perfection of one of the main characters. It's because he's supposed to be the ultimate American.

OV-1D

I didn't give permission for myself to be in that book , I'm the "Ultimate American" thank you .  ;)
