Grayelky...Thanks for the welcome! Sorry about that PM/email mess up. I fixed that. I'll email this evening.

Take your time and look down the road a bit, if you are thinking you may do a little Sillouete shooting or dabble in any competition I would leand towards a bolt gun of some type.  Hard to tell where you will end up, but you will be limited in the compeditive department if you go lever action.  Can't say they are bad, just limiting.  Take a look at some of the older 22's, the Remington 540/580 series (540, 541, 542, 580, 581&582's were some of the finest mass produced 22's ever made and can still be had for a very reasonable price (less than a BT) 10-22's are nice guns, but to make one really shoot you will spend three times what the gun cost when you buy it.  Larry

Heyjoe...another one to check out (if you can find one) would be an older Winchester 9422. They have the smoothest action I've ever seen. I think they go for premium prices these days though.

I have to step in real quick. 10/22 is quite accurate with very little work. Mine out of box freehand would shoot 3 moa easy. Now you can go all out and build a 1/2 moa 10/22 for a pretty penny.

   Heyjoe,

I suggest visiting the following forum. Great site, tons of info.

As long as we are trying to overload Heyjoe with choices, let's not forget about the Ruger 9622. Granted, it is no longer made, but I suspect he could find a used one, if he decided it was the one for him.

I own a Ruger 10/22 and would recommend it for plinking/target shooting. A lever-action rimfire rifle would certainly be be fun, but if you think you might get serious about target shooting, you will want a semi-auto to avoid the movements in cycling the action between rounds.

If you decide you want to go with a center-fire caliber lever gun, I'd suggest getting one that shoots .357 magnum or .44 magnum. You can buy high-power rounds for hunting big game or self-defense use, and low-power Cowboy Action Shooting rounds for plinking (you can shoot at targets, but I hesitate to suggest a lever-action rifle for formal target shooting).

I own a Marlin .44mag Cowboy lever action rifle and shoot it quite a bit in local S.A.S.S. matches (50-60 rounds per match). Cowboy ammo, such as the Ultramax http://www.ultramaxammunition.com/cowboy.php">http://www.ultramaxammunition.com/cowboy.php is loaded to low velocities, even the rounds in magnum cases. I would suggest using the magnum-length cases, whether you buy or reload your own ammo, to reduce the leading at the chamber mouth of the rifle.

Cecil, Steve Young is the generally acknowledged expert Rossi gunsmith.  You can get his CD over at stevesgunz.com and make that 92 action really run.

Chas.+1 for Steve Young. I've already worked the action, and it is super slick, fast as I can work the lever. I've been doing some gunsmithing since I was a young boy. I've ordered a stainless steel mag folower from stevesguns to replace the plastic one that comes on the r92.

heyjoe, when/if you're ready to step up from the .22 rifle you might consider the new ruger scout rifle.

the .308 caliber will have more recoil and be more expensive to shoot than something like a .223, but you would be able to hunt most anything in north america.

the scout looks to be a very solid all-around gun for both hunting and fighting.

msrp is something like $900, but I saw it listed for $748 on davidsons. still expensive, but just throwing that out as a good all-purpose gun.

and if you like levers, don't forget about the 30-30. it's been around a long time for a reason. and with the new hornady leverevolution rounds it has stepped up to modern times.

My choice would be any of the various CZ rimfire models(452, 453, 455).  There are few companies other than NAA of which I think more highly.  Every CZ product I have had has been just fantastic.

did you sell the 30-30 you were selling?

Scoped marlin 30AW(basically a 336 but with birch hardwood instead of walnut), gold-plated trigger, sling, nothing fancy just a solid deer rifle but in good shape. Haven't officially put it on the market yet but still plan on it.
