Went to a local gun show which was pretty large and I saw one NAA LR pistol. Looking around for something to buy to make my trip worth while and saw this for $20.  If your taking your prize NAA pistol to the range you can't just take your ammo in a plastic box.  Here is what you need.  The last picture is a close up of the wood on the bottom.  Is this mahogany, teak? It is a very heavy wood.  If anyone knows I would appreciate your thoughts.

Looks like Maple or even Walnut to me but pic colors on computers are not always right.

Like I said to my wife when I first met her.....nice box!

coopercdrkey

It is neither mahogany nor teak, and the bottom is not the same wood as the top.

The bottom piece could be a kind of oak-  but there are any number of close grained hardwoods.

The top piece is actually pretty interesting. The shot of the inside, which is darker and may just be from the lighting, almost looks like the burl wood used on dashboards.  (Yes, I know that "burlwood" does not define a species.)

I wish my old partner, with whom I spent many days harvesting and finishing a variety of local woods, were available to identify this beautiful box for you.  Alas, he is no more.

I know was you are saying about two different types of wood, I thought that as well, but on close examination, I think they are the same.  The burl part is just generating a much different look.  The end grain is identical, the exact same curvature to the wood rings.  Their are parts of the ends of the burl top that look identical to the bottom.  I do not think its oak.

I think Chop may be on the right track with a curly maple call.

CHOPS,

What you said about "Nice box" reminds me of the movie Naked Gun 33 1/3 I think, where Leslie Neilson is right under the actress going up a ladder to the attic, looking up her skirt, as all normal American males would do, and then he says "Nice Beaver" To which she hands him down a real beaver and says " Thank you, we just had him stuffed"

Nothing new under the sun.  Guess these boxes have been made for match shooting, here is one that was manufactured.  On sites they do say they are hard to find currently.  At least I see what the center was used for, carrying another 50 rounds.  Got mine loaded up.

........and she married you anyway.

   Awesome find!

I'm on the fence....Bottom looks like mahogany and top looks like figured walnut. The two (Mahogany and Walnut) can trick the eye because it "shimmers" when held to just the right light. The figured walnut top, at least to me, resembles the walnut stock figuring.

In this picture I show some nice tight figured black walnut then the gun stock is a loose figured walnut and at the top of the picture is maple.

Just a different angle on the walnut figuring on the stock and the grain of the Maple box.

I have come to the conclusion it is some species of mahogany. I have worked a lot with walnut, maple and mahogany. I know it is not walnut, the grain pattern and color are not maple.  It is the color of mahogany, shimmers in light like mahogany. And I am sure the top and bottom are the same wood.  At the ends where the figuiring is light it matches perfectly to the bottom.  now all I have to do is find one for a mag and I'm set.  Wheres my popcorn?

chopprs

Zippo, you are a nice guy but me thinks you need some new glasses!

Those two pieces of wood look nothing like eachother.

The factory Ruger stock is birch. They always have been......

The box that you first posted is Maple, Curly Maple if you want a fancy name.

45flint

I think your wearing those sunglasses, that your  image to the left has on.

   Mahogany

chopprs

MAHOGANY?!?!?!...are you stoned or just stupid!!!

You might as well just say it is Burled Picklewood!!!

That box is Curly Maple and you need glasses as well!

Sometimes I find boxes at the cigar store that are decent for display of pocket watches and mouseguns, if you're on a budget and don't mind the smell of tobacco. The art work on some of the high-line stogie boxes is fantastic. Some of the boxes, miniature chests.

Final Chapter of Wood Wars or Why did this guy post a box in the NAA forum?

First the wood on both top and bottom is the same, the figuire just makes it look different.

   End grain shot very telling.

Lastly just looking at the end where the figuire starts to run out.  Looks like similar graining to me?

Mahogany harder to prove but it is going in for DNA testing in the morning.  Not sure that will satisfy everyone.

@45flint,I have a box I made years ago that has the same grain. The wood I bought to make it was sold to me as mahogany.

louiethelump

Where there you go!!!

   Proof positive!

   The Possom confirms it..........

   End of discussion......

.......no......no....no, I don't think I will (Howard Hughes at the Congressional Interrogation)

I have not moved on and I will give anyone hard cash that can prove to me that box is Mahogany, simply because it is not!

I happen to be an expert on boxes! (smell my finger! )

. . . with tongue in cheek he says

What's green and smells like Miss Piggy?

   Sorry couldn't help myself

chopprs

......Kermit?

.....what's brown and smells like the Swedish chef?

I absolutely DO need glasses. These old eyes are getting very tired these days.

Always made of birch??? Hmm....Why would Ruger claim walnut if this is the case?? Not questioning your expertise at all Chopps buddy. Just curious is all. Here is a picture of a new birch stock that I reconfigured and the "walnut in question" stock. The grains are not even remotely close to being the same, nor is the raw color or grain configuration. Again, not challenging...I just haven't seen this degree of difference within the same species of wood.

As for the Maple, I was very aware that it was not what Steve's box was made of that he got at the show. I was just showing different types of wood is all.

I hope this picture shows enough of the difference in the grain pattern between the vintage Ruger stock and the new Birch stock. I'm not wood expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I can't see where these two Ruger factory stocks are made of the same wood.

We should rename this thread, Wood identifying 101...lol.

One thing is for sure!!! It's NOT a vernier box!

What ever the wood, it's a grand addition to the collection Steve and I'm glad you shared it with us. The friendly banter is just a perk of this great chat forum and it's what keeps me coming back time and time again.
