I plan to carry Speer Gold Dots in my mini magnum as a defensive load.  $20-21 for a box of defensive ammo seems quite reasonable to me.  What 22WMR do you shoot as range ammo?  For my other calibers I tend to use Federal American Eagle or Winchester white box - the right intersection of price and quality.  What's the go-to equivalent in 22 magnum?

Thanks.

These days, just finding .22 Magnum ammo in a store is an accomplishment in itslef, at least around here it is! For something to shoot, just remember that NAA specifically recommends against using PMC rimfire ammunition in their guns. Other than that, whatever you can find the cheapest is good enough to shoot. What will be the best? Whatever shoots the best in *your* gun, & finding that out will require a lot of shooting. Having said that, the old original 40-grain FMJ & HP versions by Winchester & CCI are probably a good place to start. If you can find it, there's a cheaper Winchester version(Wildcat?) that should be OK for practice.

I use winchester superX .22 WRF in my mini for plinking. It is all over the local gun shows for cheaper than long rifle. Apparently few people know what it is and that it can be fired from the WMR chamber. Is basically a .22 mag short.

Yes, you CAN shoot .22-WRF from a .22-Magnum revolver, but you generally can't shoot .22-Magnum from a .22-WRF firearm. I have an old Winchester Model 90 made in 1906 that shoots this round. When you're looking for .22-WRF, it's not that easy to find. Occasionally I can get it for $15 per box of 50, when ammo makers do a short run and they filter out to retailers.

If you're getting it for less than .22LR, you're lucky--and I want to find out your source!

I thought it was PMC we are told not to shoot. I just bought a brick of Armscor.

Greg, I was wrong & you're 100% right. the manual says to avoid PMC ammo, & I've edited my post above to correct it. Sorry for the goof, & thanks for pointing it out. My memory worries me sometime- but then i forget all about it.  ;)

Yeah, I finally found some Speer Gold Dots, (which I had been searching for which seems like forever), at Gander Mountain's website and they were $20.00 a box. Had to go for a box.

Yeah, that's a little steep, but for self-defense ammo, it's a pretty good bargain. I bought some self-defense ammo in .380ACP for $48 for a box of 20. I still haven't shot any of it. At $2.40 per pop, how can you afford to? I also decided that the round wasn't as effective as I thought they originally were, but they do look cool.

I have only been able to grab CCIs at Academy stores other than a grand opening at a Walmart about a year ago.  $11 to $14 for 50, they seem to have had about 5 different CCI ammo types during the last month or more, waiting for them to get a large supply of the Choot Ems again for $42 for 200.  Only WRFs ive seen were for $15.99 a box of 50.

Now that is some super pricing and availability there in CT.

Saw a similar pile of Speer Gold Dot Magnums at my local Gander Mountain store today. They were $19.99 per box, limit 2.

They had more .22 in stock today than I have seen in several years. Sort of felt ....good!

I see the 22lr stock coming back a little also, was able to pick up a few more brands to test in my Mini, still not sure what it likes yet, wasn't much to choose from for a long time.
