I know that this played a part if our choosing Zombie skulls as our focus targets!  A secondary reason was it seemed "less" offensive than talking about shooting another person.  Honestly, I was a little taken aback by the responses...

Zombie is Offensive to gun owners:  This is the most confusing to PoBoySpecial and myself.  We actually chose the Zombie motif to be LESS OFFENSIVE.  I can tell by most of you posting that you have the same feelings toward taking another life as PoBoySpecial and myself... We REALLY don't want to do it.  To lesson the weight of what our testing implies, we chose Zombies.  Zombies don't exist, are already dead, totally evil, and thus we are NOT practicing to kill another human being... But our information should still be valuable to all!

   Just my thoughts.

heyjoe

Zombie isnt offensive to gun owners here. there are some of us that think it is not a great image to portray to the wider public of how responsible gun owners conduct themselves and view their responsibility in owning and carrying firearms. They also feel that God forbid you were ever involved in a shooting you wouldnt want the justification waters muddied by having used ammo called zombie killers or a zombie killer gun. if you think that lawyers couldnt twist that zombie thing into being an indication that you are a racist you just havent been paying attention in the last 50 years. People have been using the term zombie as a code word for other races on gun forums for quite a while. there are others here who dont agree.

on another forum a few were indignant that i would postulate that having a gun that said zombie killer or using zombie ammo COULD cause additional unnecessary problems in a shooting. And that was the topic of the thread, about the type of gun and caliber could cause a problem, as in uproar leading to a DA politically grandstanding( that would never happen, oh wait it has), for someone even in a justified shooting. several didnt comment on the caliber or type gun question but by gawd it was their constitutional right to carry zombie ammo and a gun that said zombie killer.

I feel that it has taken a long time to get to this point where gun rights have expanded greatly in the areas of concealed carry , castle laws, states recognizing each others ccw's, etc and i think it is idiotic, harmful and serves no purpose other than immaturity and somebody making a buck off of it to promote cartoon guns and cartoon ammo.

For anyone who doesn't get what Heyjoe and others have said, just imagine if George Zimmerman had been using Zombie Ammo in a Zombie killer gun.

My video games are toys.  They have zombies in them.

My guns are not toys.  They don't have "zombie killer" or any reference to imagined foes for a reason.

Nothing about my guns is intended to blur the line between a gun and a toy in any fashion.  I don't need to try to explain the differences to a jury.  Randomly select twelve people on the street.  Reject any who have been law enforcement officers in the past as they will be disqualified (as will certain other fields).  Now try to put a rational argument together to convince them to agree on why the sky is blue or more to the point that individual ownership of firearms is a basic right and vital to the principle of autonomy.  Good luck with them on your jury

Hey All,

Well, I just made some purchases last night... we are now stocked up on skull material and blood.  I purchased the following ammo:

   - Remington Golden Bullet 22 Short (high velocity)

   - Remington Thunderbold .22 LR

   - Remengton 22 Target

   - CCI Mini Mag 22 LR Copper Plated Round Nose

   - Winchester Super X 22 LR

   - CCI Maxi Mag 22 WMR JHP

   - Winchester Dynapoint 22 WMR

We will be testing these through my 22 North American Arms Black Widow to start, but will be changing firearms (action and barrel length) to get as much data from these rounds as possible.

Keep checking our channel for videos over the next few months.

jackson57

Your results should be interesting.  Two important ones to add to your test (unless already done) might be:

-CCI Velocitor 22 LR 40 gr.

-Hornady 22WMR Critical Defense 45 gr.

A lot of people use these two rounds in short barrel revolvers for a bit more punch.

   We appreciate your research.

kalel01a

Jackson,

We already did the Velocitor, and the Hornady is absolutly on my list... I'm curious myself.  I just haven't bought any yet!

I think the guy that markets an actual Zombie to shoot at ... would maybe become a wealthy man.  hint hint

Would the weight of your Zombie Skulls be prohibitively expensive in shipping ?

Could you sell the mold & blood kits ?

(I'm assuming the skulls are plaster of paris ?)

I think if these young folks had Zombies to shoot at .. & they could brag to their friends about how far / how many they shot ... it may be a big hit !  They could spray paint them up in different guise so it wouldn't be the same old same old ...

We like to shoot "Clay Pigeons" sitting in holders here .. cause you get to see some action on a "Hit".   Think I'm gonna try the cookies & crackers that these other fellas have mentioned ... sounds like fun.

Just passing on some thoughts my friend ..

Check out this company.  Zombie targets galore!!!

We may look at doing something in the future, but honestly I am just really curious with what we are getting from our results.

I love thus exhaustive testing.  To me, it is just really informative and fun!

I don't know why I can't make the vids play. I can read the text when I hit "more."

I am a old fart and not real "puter saavy" so maybe I just don't know what I'm doing. Whaddeveh!

I liked the test of the .25ACP.

I think the reason the poor old .25ACP gets so little respect. Is that people think the .22LR has just as good or better MV and ME because mfg.'s always advertise ballistics taken from rifles. Not to mention more reliable ignition of the center fire .25. And of course feeding in semi-autos.

Trust me boys and girls, J.M. Browning did not ride the "short bus" to school. If the .22LR was as good or better, he wouldn't have wasted his time on the .25

Heyjoe,
Thanks, and boy, you aren't kidding!  That little 25 ACP was a bit finicky.   However, it's amazing what a little lube will do for a firearm.

A short story about that car door...  My wife had asked PoBoySpecial to save the glass... She wanted to see if her crossbow could penetrate and get a Zombie on the inside... LOL... Well, he tried, but got it with the 380 ACP on accident https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52zMLjGTAz4.  OOPS!  Thanks for the feedback!

I admit I did not read the whole thread but I did read the first page of 4 my browser displays. I have been around firearms since the mid '70s and am in my later '50s. No one takes firearms more seriously than I do though I am sure most here take them just as seriously. I also play some video games, so what?

I saw the Zombie loads and thought it to be a cleaver marketing tool. I even bought a box in .380, mostly as a conversation piece. While I can 100% understand the point of view of many who see the whole thing as immature, it is to me mostly a red herring. Hornady has found a cleaver marketing angle to sell to younger consumers.

I served in the Army in the Nam era and my son in his late '20s has just reenlisted in the navy for another 4 years. We enjoy shooting together and also playing video games. To us, the whole zombie thing is just a little levity. Yes firearms are a serious thing but do we really need to abandon fun to maintain the seriousness of the subject? Why can't we have both?

EDIT: I also saw this as a quickly passing fad. I have no intent to USE the ammo, I have plenty of that in NON zombie brands. For us, this whole thing will be over with soon enough and my virgin box of unused rounds, might be worth what I paid for them as a collectors item, someday but I am not holding my breath.

This is only my opinion. Take it as you will:

"Zombies" are everywhere. That is why I always carry.

I think it's "childish" or maybe a little bit "naive" to take it literally (as shown in the movies).

I also have the feeling, most of the marketing campaign of all the "Zombie" products, have gotten a little bit out of hand.

But their value in the fight against bad guys isn't diminished by Pop Culture, but by the naive.

Peace out brothers and carry on.

I don't fear zombies.

calblacksmith the main caution was against carrying them as self defense rounds not as target rounds.

kalel01a

So, what did you folks think about the Black Widow review?

stantheman86

People are taking this whole "zombie" thing WAYYYY to seriously............ 8)

Like was said, part of it started, IMO with the "Nazi Zombies" part of the Call of Duty games, then it went from there......"Zombie" then became a "code name" for bad guys, attackers, etc.

I saw the PoBoySpecial thing on the "can the .22 short stop a Zombie" and to be honest it didn't show me much, they fired a .22 short into a fake skull and some red water splashed onto a white backdrop. It was entertaining for the 20 seconds I watched it for though.

The ZombieMax ammo is a marketing ploy, how many millions of boxes of this crap has Hornady sold just because it has a cool looking package?     IMO there are better choices for self defense, like Hornady TAP, which is used my many LE agencies, among other kinds of ammo like Golden Saber or Gold Dot.

If you're carrying a .22 for defense, I don't think any court is going to be able to make the "too much gun" prosecution stick, regardless of what kind of ammo you're using.  IMO the .22 WMR is a decent choice for defense, it shows that you are just a responsible citizen who carries a small, low powered handgun for absolute last-ditch life or death defense scenarios.   And we all know a .22 WMR will penetrate "Zombie skull" :D

heyjoe, thanks, You can call me Cal (I get that a lot! )or anyone else can too, I don't care! :P

I realize it is in relation to carry that any issue can come up. I can also see, given the current media and their consistent over hype of anything firearm related in a negative way (like someone mentioned about "cop killer" ammo and the whole Glocks are not able to be detected in body scanner diatribe) how caution in what we do needs to be taken into account

i will admit that I have never been in the defendants chair in a court case (and I pray I never am) but my logic (hey I could be WAY off base here) tells me that a defense to the whole name thing can easily be mounted by the fact that the ammo is exactly the same as the self defense rounds they make with the exception of the color of the plastic tip. If someone was inclined to carry the standard self defense round from them and the zombie stuff was on the shelf next to it, and say it was on sale and the regular rounds were not, why would one pay more for the same thing just to get a different package?

Here I will admit that I have not bought ammo in a LONG time with the exception of rimfire rounds as I reload myself due to the cost of centirefire rounds. Could not the charge also be made that I "souped up" my self defense rounds because I was some kind of a crazy person? After the round is fired, it is pretty hard to know how much powder I used in that round, yes other rounds can be disassembled but to prove how much was in the one that was fired will be a bit harder but hey, I have been wrong before, there might be some kind of math or test or something that can see into the past ?? ;)

heyjoe

im really not sure about handloads as far as to whether it ever became a real issue in a justified self defense situation. You hear conflicting stories but nothing documented that i have seen. That being said i wouldnt carry handloads for self defense either. Its just not worth it to me and to paraphrase Lohmans premise, if anything does happen and i have to use my firearm for self defense, God forbid, I dont want any other issues obscuring the main and most important issue, was it a justified shooting.
Practice is a great time to use handloads, but for self defense carry ill spend the extra bucks and buy a box of quality self defense ammo that works well in that particular firearm.
To each his own.
