I am new to the forum and have a question about my recently purchased firearm. So looks like the barrel is pretty beat up this was a used firearm. Is there anything I can do about this? I don't feel this is a warranty issue just want the barrel to look shoot able. I am a little worried about shooting this one due to the barrel condition. Does NAA sell replacement barrels? Thanks for the help.

Uncle_Lee

I would take it to the local gunsmith and have him put a crown on the barrel.
But that's just me.
My local guy charges me $25 to crown a mini.
Takes off all the rough stuff on the end.

I agree with uncle-lee, looks like it needs to be cleaned up a little, if you don't know of a gun smith in you area, you could call NAA service dept and I'm sure they can help you out also.
Welcome to the forum, lot's of good people here to get advice from.

cfsharry

If your concern about shooting it is brought about by the condition of the muzzle I would say not to worry. You may have lousy accuracy but the gun is not unsafe.
It will not only look better but will probably shoot better if you follow Lee's advice.

Minimag22 - welcome to the forum!

I agree with Cfsharry that the gun is not at all unsafe to shoot but a crown will help the looks and accuracy.

Uncle_Lee

I agree it will hurt accuracy.
I have one that I bought new that shot 10" off to the 8 o'clock position at two long steps.
I had it crowned and now it shoots to point of aim. (as near as I can hold it)

Thanks guys for the help. I will see if a local gunsmith and help me out.

I can not get this gun to rest on the safety cylinder as well. I have tried as suggest by NAA but the hammer does not want to go into the notch (pulled the trigger etc) no go. How many people carry this firearm with the hammer resting on a live round down position?

OV-1D

If the notches are in the cylinder it MUST be able to go into them , only thing stopping it is talent . ;) ;)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

Minimag - note that when the hammer is down in a safety notch it does not seat quite as deeply as when down on a chamber. Maybe a millimeter difference. When the hammer is in the safety notch there will be just a little rotation if you twist the cylinder because the notch is wider than the hammer.

I do not think any of us carry with the hammer resting on a live round. Some of us do carry with the hammer resting on an empty  chamber. That gives us four rounds instead of five, but if you are having difficulty with the safety notches I highly recommend carrying on an empty chamber.

I agree with Dinadan, I would never carry it with the hammer resting on a live round, that is a accident waiting to happen.

I just noticed my 22 mini mag barrel has NO rifling whatsoever! I got it last August, (brand new) and did not fire it for several months.  It shoots about 8" low from point of aim at 15 feet. I guess I just chalked it up to a short barrel and me needing more practice. Shot it last week, and did fine by "compensating" point of aim. Later, when cleaning it, I took a real close look down the barrel, and discovered there is NO rifling inside! This gun has exactly 100 rounds of .22 mag, and exactly 125 rounds of .22 LR.  I can't believe I never noticed it when I first got it.

A quick call to NAA, and it's going back to the factory. It will ship tomorrow. We'll see what the factory says...

I also agree 1000%!  Never carry it with a live round under the hammer! Not even in the "first click" position. I'm pretty anal about always carrying it with the hammer in a safety notch.

Harold - Welcome to this forum!

From your photo it appears to me that your Mini has rifling. It looks as if there is some kind of residue coating the inside and covering the rifling. I would give it a good cleaning with solvent and bronze brush before sending it back. You can see two of the lands in your photo.

In another thread you mention shooting some very dirty Thunderbolt ammo. Is that what you shot through your Mini? In any case, I would not shoot that mini again until it is cleaned up, or repaired if need be.

After you clean this Mini, would you send another picture of how it looks then, really would like to see the results.

cfsharry

I agree With Dinadan.  I noticed the rifling and a very heavy deposit of what appears to be lead as soon as I saw the pic.  Was going to point it out but Dinadan types faster than me.  A good cleaning should get you your rifling back.
Old school; hammer down on an empty chamber

Harold2689

Thanks for the replies.

This picture was taken after cleaning with solvent and a .22 cal copper or brass brush that is in the cleaning kit. Ran the wire brush through it several times, followed with more solvent and cleaning pads, and several more passes with the brush.  What you see in the picture is after cleaning.

Yes, 125 rounds of Remington Thunderbolt .22LR went through it. From the very first shot, it always shot low from point of aim. If the Remington Thunderbolt ammo is the cause of this, then it is r-e-a-l-l-y  crappy ammo...

I just looked again with a 20X magnifier, and you may be right. I'll dig out the cleaning kit and try again tomorrow.

Thanks again for spotting that...

Harold

Ok, I have to really thank you guys for suggesting my problem might be just fouling from shooting dirty ammo. That's exactly what it was!  After looking again through a 20X magnifier, I could see what appeared to be rifling.

This morning I soaked the barrel with CLP solvent and let it soak for several minutes. I used a brand new cleaning brush (I think it's made of copper) and really worked over the barrel. I was amazed at what came out! It took several application/brushing cycles, and here's the final results:

Never again will this barrel ever see Remington Thunderbolt ammo!  The first picture I posted was AFTER I cleaned it last Thursday. We have a rule at our house that all guns are cleaned as soon as we return from the range. The first picture was AFTER running the cleaning brush through several times. That's why I could not believe that I didn't notice the "no rifling" situation before. The fouling in the first picture must have been the result of Thursday's trip to the range, when I shot a full box of 50 rounds. I would have thought that Remington, being a well respected player in the ammo game would have a better product. When this junk ammo is gone there will be no more.

Thanks again for helping to prevent me making a fool of myself to NAA. As it is, I only look like a fool to you guys...  ;D
