22mag Companion Rimfire Conversion

Im hearing rumors about an AFTERMARKET conversion to allow rimfire 22 Long, Shorts, (not LR) in the Magnum Companion guns.  It seems the nipples are removed and then the threads in the cylinder have to be drilled out.  When its done the cartridges are loaded and each chamber is covered by its own plate with a built in firing pin.

Personally I would have preferred it with a separate rear plate like the Krist Conversions, instead of tiny individual chamber pieces.  Apparently there was one on GB in May???

An interesting idea

Do you have a link for your  rumor?  First I heard of it. sounds cool.

This is cool. But I would worry about head space. The buttons have no retainer and might move rear, jam and or fire from recoil.Same reason a long ill fitting cap is not good on mini. First you would need to have NAA fit a second cylinder so you could convert it back to BP if you mess it up or to keep it legal.

Thanks. Will look for the other type also.

There have been conversion cylinders for cap & ball pistols for many years but I am concerned that at some point they will
trigger laws that will cause those pistols to be treated the same as cartridge pistols. As it is they are a way for people that
have no business having handguns to get them. Even in Kalifornia you can buy a cap & ball pistol & a conversion cylinder
and walk out of the store.

Those with no business with a gun will always be able to get them on the street faster than a honest man can get them . Get it before it's gone.  A honest man just thinking a thought will soon trigger laws in our BS state.

This auction was back in April.
They tried to sell it three times.
Two times they started at $100.
The third try the starting bid was $150....?
Then it wasn't listed again.

If you look at the "buttons" it looks like the firing pin is in the center. That won't work unless it some how moves out to the rim is a manner not seen.

I just can't help thinking that this is a solution without a problem.  If you're going to carry a conversion to skirt legalities,  we know that in a shooting situation,  you're gonna catch hell.  I'd  take my chances and carry a  magnum if I thought my life depended on it.
I own conversion cylinders for my Ruger old army, remington 1858's, pocket remington 32, Rogers and Spencer  and I'm thinking about getting one for my walker replica. They are great fun to shoot with cowboy loads and are much cleaner than black powder. I also shoot wax boolits with 209 primers out of the 45's here at the house when I can't get to the range. I have three black powder minis, a companion,  a super companion and a 4" earl and one old freedom arms bp. None will ever get a conversion, they are just for fun. If I need a 22 mag mini, that's what I'll put in my pocket.

That is exactly what I think!

If someone wants to play around with the idea as a hobby and try to make it work - well, it is their time and money.

And just exactly who might that be?
If you had not posted a photo of your Glock I would be thinking that maybe you fit the description. Seems like you are real interested in getting a gun that does not require a background check.

Thats my thought also Dinadan about the not wanting to register it . Converting this thing is one heck of a time consumer and money pit . To each their own I guess.  ;)
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

When I hear "the last century" I think 1899! Dang I'm OLD! If your cut off is 1996 or earlier perhaps look for a old Freedom Arms mini. They are Grandpa to NAA.Some of the guys on the forum have them.Might sell?  Might be more reliable than the best conversion. Also there were some other "rougher" looking knock offs.

Guys I get it, you don't like the idea BUT I suspect a LOT of that is because you can buy all the cartridge Minis you want.  Here in Maryland they are forbidden unless they are from the last century (1996 or earlier I think).  That applies to Cops too, BTW.  However owning a BP Companion is OK and converting a C&P to shoot cartridges is OK too.  Silly yes but this is Maryland???
Do derringers fall under the same regulations? Seems like a pre 1996 derringer might be easier to find. Personally, for self defense, I would rather have two rounds of modern cartridge (any caliber) than four rounds of .22 black powder. But like I said in my last post, it is your time and money.

And like I said, all this effort toward getting a gun without going through a background check does seem ... What do you have besides your Glock?

Yes - I have a Freedom Arms mini I would sell. It's near new condtion and in the original box. PM if interested.

Edelweiss,  as you seem to be seeking a black powder backup with a conversion, you might consider a pocket Remington. Originally a .31, a .32 conversion cylinder is available. The cylinder is for .32s&w short but is long enough to ream deeper for .32s&w long for a little more power. Not nearly as small as a naa companion but still very small and concealable. Mine is a hoot to shoot c&b or smokeless. It might have enough pop to get you out of a bind and wouldn't require major modification to switch between cap and cartridge.

I borrowed these pictures from Taylor's where I purchased my conversion cylinder.

I'm not sure about Maryland's gun laws, but, once you place a cartridge into the blackpowder weapon, it is no longer a blackpowder weapon, and would fall into the category of a cartridge weapon.
I understand the self-defense utilization for a mini, and the whole tried by 12, rather than being carried by 6, as well, but, when you go to that jury with the "radically" modified blackpowder pistol, what they will see is a premeditated "assault" modified weapon. Just my thoughts, based on my emergency room experiences. Maryland may be more forgiving than some of the others, but based on their archaic "save us from ourselves" laws regarding the mini's, my guess is that the jury would, likely, rule against you, then you need to hope they don't award your "victim" your whole income for the rest of your life.

Doc you hit the nail on the head!
Anyone who thinks converting a black powder gun to a cartridge gun and because it's genesis is BP it is not somehow a cartridge gun is severely deluded.
Somehow I get the sense that some feel if a revolver is designed for BP that means concealed carry laws do not apply.  In my state, WI, if you are carrying a handgun concealed, be it BP or cartridge, you need a permit. Don't know about other states but believe they would pretty much be the same.

I think that if I were in Baltimore I'd carry the biggest hicap I could get in the front seat of the uhaul for the ride out of town. Then I'd never look back lest I be turned into a pillar of salt. 8)

Interesting how when someone pulls their posts it makes other's look kind of goofy.  Like; thanks for the answer but what was the question?
