New .22LR - what to lock it in for travel?

Got the smaller size of NAA Mini .22LR recently.  It was $150 brand new at Cabela's.  The store employees and my fellow shoppers really, really, really didn't want to sell it to me.  Why get that, mister, when there's a whole display case of .380 autos right next to it?  (Already have one, thanks.)  What about that much more powerful S&W revolver over there?  (Missing the point completely, and besides it was $550.)  What about that jumbo derringer?  (ditto)  But there are several more powerful NAA Minis right here!  (For twice the price.)  One other customer actually suggested I must live in "gang banger land" if I need one of THOSE instead of a nice stout 1911.  Joy...  Finally found a bored young man who looked like he might want to shut up and take my money.  I think they only had the .22 LR for that price as a conversation starter and didn't seriously expect anyone to buy it.

Sweet little contraption, lots of fun at the range...  Made a serviceable holster out of cardboard and duct tape just because I can.

I like how NAA included a nice big locking box.  Could be useful in the car.  But what would the rest of you suggest for backpack travel?  Something just big enough to hold the mini but not much bigger, strong enough to deter a hotel maid, able to be locked to a pipe or hotel room luggage rack.  Does it exist - preferably for less than $20?  Real estate agent key boxes come to mind but I'm not sure if they're big enough.

Welcome to the forum. No clue on the lock but love the holster project and why you did it!  If I don't say it someone else will------- We love pictures! Show us the holster.

WHY did you buy THAT??? ;)

Welcome to the official NAA Addiction Therapy Forum. If you need therapy here, we have good advice for you: buy more NAA's. That's the only thing that works for an NAA addiction. There is no cure, so you might as well feed the need.

First,WELCOME!!

Very nice post and very well written! For $150.00, if it was new, I would have bought it, and I own a gun shop. If it is used, and in good shape, I think, you did good.

The real estate lock boxes I have seen should hold a LR mini. I had not thought about that, but it sounds like a good idea to me. A section of chain that the shackle would pass through would give you a few more places to secure it, such as a pipe the shackle would not fit around. While it is a little larger, the magnum mini is just as easy to pocket carry, and packs a little more bite. I like your holster option, but I like your attitude even more. I suspect you will fit right in around here. Now, about your next mini.......

Yup, can't go wrong on a price like that.

At first I assumed it was used.  It's still a reasonable price for used in mint condition.  But it was in the "new" area of the store, they insisted it was new, and I've found no clues suggesting it could be anything but new.

Holster is a piece of Capri Sun 10-pack box, cut to shape and held together with painters tape, then wrapped in duct tape.  I want to add a belt clip for IWB and maybe a bit of elastic on top if I can find the right parts around the house.  Actually I didn't intend the duct tape holster for serious use.  It's just to test a basic design idea before attempting any leather or 3D printing or whatever.  It's been working fine in my pocket every day (at home, unloaded) for a couple weeks though.

(Edited to add: I noticed the serial number is visible.  Is that considered a big privacy risk?  I can blur it out if so.)

One more thing to add: My wife and I like the steampunk (neo-Victorian, Jules Verne, Sherlock Holmes) style and often dress as such for sci-fi/fantasy conventions.  Took one look at NAA's product photos and almost fell over laughing.  Steampunk revolver!  Especially with the rounded wooden grips like mine came with.  Straight out of Wild Wild West - at least in spirit.  Most convention organizers frown on openly carrying actual weapons, but y'know, it's still kinda fun to imagine.

NAA's marketing dept might want to give this some thought.  There's a lot of stylistic overlap between cowboy and steampunk.

Sorry for the ignorance but what the heck is steampunk without looking it up on the net here . It would be better coming from an activist I believe .   ;) Oh and pictures if there is such please . :D
TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

OLD and GRUMPY

For the S. P. look I saw one with a bayonet .Mount a over size brass spy glass/scope on top. Most gun people don't know what a mini is. At the convention it might just pass as a prop with enough stuff glued on! Play with it and post pics.

This is going to be fun. Can't weight to see what ov-1d thinks when he sees Steam Punk. It is role playing. Old west/Sifi/Victorian/Think Wild Wild West with Will Smith and a little Rube Goldberg mixed in. Sorry I cant post pics right now.

Role playing !!!! I do enough of that while sleeping sometimes it brings night sweats . Ha Ha . And then again I ,we , did enough of that role playing when we were doing Amway for a kinda short while , we pretended to be rich and somewhat famous but dang near broke from playing the act . Ha Ha again . ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nerf guns are popular for steampunk mods.  We have several.  But a NAA mini doesn't need any gears glued on to fit the style.

On the matter of my original question: I already have a Snap Safe lock box that's about the same dimensions as NAA's box, only maybe 3/4" thinner.  I've used it for my little P-32 on a few road trips this summer.  Fits in my backpack but takes up more space than I'd prefer for just one mouse gun.  If I could find something like it but half as long...

OV-1D

Say there Mike is there a market for building such things actually ? I know I could come up with a number of waaayyyy out versions of weapons and such , I have the imagination .  ;D ;D

This type of venue is for the new fangled weapon aficionado. This younger generation is fascinated by weaponry but seems to be under the assumption that the common man has no business or/nor ability to have the real thing and hence they satisfy their cravings with the above artistic renderings. They look good but do not shoot anything.

Well...  Our modded Nerfs still function as originally designed.  But unfortunately, toy foam darts aren't particularly good for defense, and the weapons are difficult to conceal for a night on the town anyway.  It's quite a shame considering the excellent grip ergonomics.

Seriously though, not all weapon-like art pieces have an obligation to go bang.  Except for NAA's products.  That's art that really does go bang.  I see what people mean when they compare it to a Swiss watch.

Open one up and then you will really know why they compare it to a Swiss watch....... 8)

Hey Bouncy that's a good price for sure. Anything under $200 would be a good price now-a-days. I like the holster but a little magic marker would  really set it off, make for a real show piece.... ;)

Any comparison to a Swiss watch is null and void.  Swiss watches actually work.

So do the Minis - - isn't that what we were discussing?

I suppose if we're talking about the "funny guns" you are spot on!

Many hotel rooms have small safes.
The NAA is small enough to put in another container.

Personal alarm & fishing line makes a good alarm.

While driving keep up with state laws.

I could never be accurate with the small grip. Look into the Cvang or other grip. I went the folding holster grip.
