Why the interest for a sidewinder short barrel?

Curious why the interest in a shorter barrel sidewinder mag.  The shortest gun I own is the Ranger which I believe is.  1 5/8ths.    With a mag I would not want to go shorter.   Do you really gain that much more in concealibility?   I would actually like a longer barrel.   2". Or.  3".   would use mag more effectively?

because they are mini revolvers and many people want them to be as small as possible. i have a 1 1/8 mini magnum. i have read that the difference in velocity between the 1 1/8 magnum and the 1 5/8 magnum is not as marked as the difference between the 1 1/8 and 1 5/8 LR.

Just seems to me a half an inchin a gun this small is not that material either and I think the gun looks better the longer the barrel.   Steve

I agree with the longer barrels. They offer more complete powder burn, and a longer sight radius. I realize 1/2" extra length is not a significant gain to brag about... but it looks and feels better to me.

If you're going to carry the Mini in a pocket or wear it on a buckle, then the shorter the barrel the better. For most any other type of holster carry, the extra barrel length will not be that hard to conceal. McCloud carried a 7 1/2" barrel Colt SAA concealed.

My Smith & Wesson Model 36 has a 3" barrel rather than the more traditional 2". I had a 2 1/2" Model 19 that did not extract .357 cases fully, but my 3" Model 66 does, and I feel no difference when carrying concealed (Uncle Mikes Super Belt Slide).

1 5/8" is ok but the 1 1/8" sits in my back pocket better with the Secret Service grips on it. Most of all I just like the way the shorter barrel looks.

Kid,

here's hopeing they make some for us Roscoe Snubs guys as well as some for the Wyatt Earp types.

Seems it's that cylinder release pin / ejector rod's design that will limit the "Sidewinder" short barrel length. So, I'm dreaming about beautiful curves & design to blind my geometric logic. IMO

anyone else losing posts lately?

   ok second try for this.

i agree with Roguets (never thought you'd hear that did you?) i like the shorter barrel myself for carry and aesthetics. in the case of the sidewinder though a short barrel would mean the ejector rod sticking out further than the barrel much like some of the older colt snubs, or else you wont be getting much extraction out of the shorter barrel model. the extraction will be limited even out of the 1 5/8 barrel.

I have found that, at least for me, the 1 5/8" is more accurrate than the 1 1/8". It may not seem like much but it is a combination of longer sight plane and that "small" addition to barrel length is about 45% longer.

I have both 1 1/8 and 1 5/8 barrel mag revolvers. I can't seem to tell much difference in carrying them. My logic tells me the 1 5/8 will give better velocity, and my mind tells me the 1 1/8 barrel will carry better. The reality is, I have not been able to tell the difference.

When you get ready to sell your 3" 66, let me know first. Please.

Why did NAA choose those odd barrel lengths, anyway?  Why not just 1", 1.5", 2", etc?

I think it is the  "Baker's Dozen" mentality in the gun industry. It's common in long arms to see 16 1/4" and 18 1/4" lengths when legal lengths are in even inches (in Oregon, hunting rifles are required 18").

I agree with Heyjoe, the ejector needs to be a certain length, and I'd prefer that the barrel be longer than the ejector rod.

I love my inch and an 1/8 and what it can do five times.  I would want a longer barrel on a sidewinder.

deja_vu

I like how the shorter barrels look. I would like to see a 3/4 inch barrel... but not sure how well that would work.

boone123

My want would be have the option of buying the gun with both cylinders right from the git-go. Would save the shipping cost back to get the 22LR cylinder fitted. Even if we could order one or the other. I belive the Mini-Master could be had with 22LR or 22Mag at one time. Maybe thats changed by now?

grayelky

I suspect the 1 1/8" was chosen because it fit the cylinder pin, and the 1 5/8 was a simple 1/2" longer. As to the 16 1/4" rifle and 18 1/2" shotgun barrels, that is legal length, plus a little bit for added insurance.

well, i own alot of the naa revolvers in magnum with conversion cylinders with the short barrel lengths and just prefer them at the 1 1/8 length. i like the look myself. it is always great to have multiple choices.

Kind of boils down to the same ol' argument, which is better:

Fleetside pickups or Stepside pickups? They both haul.
