Buying a 22 cylinder for my Ranger

It looks like 22 LR cylinder will be available for new Ranger.  Why couldn't I buy that cylinder for my current Ranger?  I know it is said that the shop needs to index them.  The Rangers are so well machined it seems to me it's probable that it would work.  Is it the turning or the barrel line up that is a concern?

That, you will have to ask NAA....

It is the timing. F the hand pushes too far, or not quite enough, the chamber will not line precisely. If the bullet does not enter the barrel correctly, bits of lead can be sheared off, which could create problems. If it is far enough out of alignment, the revolver could blow apart. In theory, anyway.

Wouldn't that be easy to test before you fire?  Turn the cylinder and make sure it drops into the slot? I have to assume the slots are identical on all the cylinders?  I was thinking when I buy a Ranger II, I could possibly use the LR cylinder for both guns.  At least that's the theory?

While many report they have used LR cylinders in different magnum guns, there is a chance your cylinder could not be timed to your gun. While I cannot say how timing is correctly checked, a member on here had, or made, a rod finished to the same diameter as the bore so he could check the alignment of the cylinder with the barrel. You will possibly have the added problem of fitment. While I suspect NAA will use as much of the original tooling as possible to make the improved BT, there is nothing to say the new version will not be totally different. We shall just have to wait and see.
