.22 Magnum Penetration out of Pug

Some time ago (it may have been the old forums) someone posted gel tests of various brands of ammunition shot out of a Pug complete with pictures.   I think some of the rounds tested were various FMJ and JHP including gold dot.

What stuck out to me was that some of the FMJ loadings penetrated better than the 12" minimum FBI standards, which I thought was impressive given the barrel length, and I wanted to look at it again for reference but can't seem to find it.  Does anyone have any info?

I carry Speer/CCI Gold Dots in my Wasp. I practice with CCI Maxi-Mag Solids.
Gold Dots are out there, but not for long. They go fast when they hit the shelf.

Thanks for the reply, I've seen those videos.

Burncycle,
Here is an interesting test you can do that would pretty much settle how good the 22 mag is at close range.

Get an empty PLASTIC (not glass) gallon milk jug and fill it with warm water. Then take it to a safe location and shoot it with your NAA Mini Mag from a distance of about two inches. You will see why I said warm water as the effect is quite dramatic.

I showed the officers in my squad this test when they scoffed at the lack of power of the 22 mag.

The takeaway being that although  HPs don't seem to reliably expand (of course) especially with the denim tests,  quality HP will get you quite close to the and sometimes reach the desired 12" depth and expand most of the time.

More remarkable to me,  even out of the pugs tiny barrel you can get ~16 inches or so with FMJ which is pretty respectable.   It gives you a comfortable margin that you can expect to at least reach vitals despite the size and caliber.

Aim for the Groin area, lots of big veins in that area. Bleeding out real fast.

I found Gold dots@ Smoky Mountain Munitions just last week. You can't use the websites like Ammoseek you need to specificly google the ammo and go through the responses. It took me maybe 45 minutes to find some that was actually in stock. I use it in a bigger house sized mouse, with a 4.2" barrel.
When I finally get my BW (next gun) it will have either Hornady critical defense or gold dot when carried, I will shoot the 30 grain stuff for practice because in is cheaper and more available.
